Hey Budda,
I don't think you realize what your saying. Cliff Coleman is a legend in our sport and has opened many doors for the development of downhill skateboarding. Give him the respect he deserves. I would like to see what you have done for the sport....probably nothing.

Full Moon ride

Well, I made it to Tam last night under the full moon and it was great. I saw Pete of the Deplo crew with a few locals from Mill Valley. The weather was in the 60s at two in the morning, even at the top of the Mountain. Usually the gate is closed but last night it was open the entire time we were there. At the top you have a view to the North East and further down the road you get views to the West looking out over the Pacific and South toward Half Moon Bay. The hike up is about forty minutes before the ride down. The road is not too steep but has many turns and is about two to three miles in length.
Oh and now for you Bubba. I only saw two people with Peter and they didn't introduce themselves to me as Bubba. Where were you? We used to drive up the service vechicles only road but it became a bust. The lot has been used by many for years now without any problems. We are quiet and the lower lot can't be seen clearly from the little hut at the parking lot entrance. Now as for me being a kook who should watch out for you, what a joke! You are another anonymous poster who I'll probably never see accept my challenge. What challenge you say? Contact me at my posted e-mail address and we will set up a race between the two of us. It can be Mt. Tam; where you say you are a local or you can come to Berkeley. My bet is $100.00 that at 50 I can beat you to the bottom in a standup race. The rest of the world should know that these true kooks never show up and accept the challenge. Yes Bubba I'm quessing that you too are one of the real kooks!
Put up or shut up!

Hey Cliff, I wonder where you're from? You must not be from around Mt. Tam because everyone that downhills there knows that this sacred place is sacred for one reason, because nobody except locs know about the rides there. As soon as your little club starts meeting at the fucking Ranger Station with skates in hand the roads gonna get gravelled. You can watch for me on the way down, kook, I'll be the one passing you like you're standing still. Shutup and Skate!

The brightest full moon in 133 years is Wednesday! I'll be riding down Mt. Tamalpais. It's about 2 1/2 to 3 miles in length with many turns. We will meet at the Pantol ranger station parking lot around eleven at night. You are welcome to join us! If you do please follow these instructions!! BE QUIET SO THE RANGER DOESN'T BUST US! The gate is locked at about ten p.m. Not to the parking lot, but to the road across the street. Don't go before then. We will all hike together to the top. It will take about forty minutes to get to the top. This will be the last time this century, don't miss out!

With the Summer Olympics in September, I've heard a rumor that NBC will be moving the Gravity Games to July. That would mean that all qualifying events will have to take place in the first 5 to 6 months of next year! After reading Manu's post about European events I see some scheduling problems.
For all of you that plan to compete in any and all EDI events, please contact EDI to try and get their event schedule posted!!!

Hey Todcar, answering to your questions, the race exists, it was a big and real official race with Australian tv, and i think some other média coverages, they have a website we can check out but they haven't written anything about the race yet, What i can tell you is there will be a report on next Intl. Longboarder issue, some of us took pictures and i took some footages with my own cam, i'll find a way to extract some photos from the DV tape. Anyway, there was the top ten speed-downhill riders, exept 4 awesome people who couldn't come at this date: Todd Lherr, Lee Dansie, Rat Sult and John Dread,(we missed them a lot) there was also some of the best lugers. I would like you guys to understand me, the goal isn't to relate an event with pride but just post it as an info.

There was signal hill in the past...and there was Australian Extreme games last week !!! Thanks to all the riders even in luge, who raced on the sickest road we've ever ridden in race, everybody was awesome ! But we don't really need to race so crazy roads in the future, we only want to stay alive, even if the show was tremendous...

This is to Someone (and anyone else who might be interested in joining us),
Some friends and I are going to be hitting Temecula Skatepark for the evening session on Wednesday at 7 pm. The park is all concrete and has some really great lines. There's only one spot in the park that has vertical, so it might be a bit mellow for a veteran pool rider, but it's still a heel of a lot of fun. There's a fee to skate, and helmet and full pads are required. Let me know if you have any questions or need directions.
Later,
Chris

"Computer geek longboarders" ,go to pool rider .com ??longboarding isn't about doing the latest tricks or jammin up the tightest tranny its sort of self restrictive to bring out the speed and the carve aspect in skating ,no one rules skating not one person or even one group of skaters that ride one type of terrain though, if you look towards a group of skaters who's energy influences all other skateforms ,it would still be street skaters their tricks are taking over the state of vert and ramp to wall antics open eyes to what can be done on the steepest pool trannies, check out what glifberg, and other "new guys"do in pools. swwt, Why were you at the GRA and why are you on this web site?Do something thats not so boring.

Its true that Gelfand did the first vertical ollie, but the street ollie is almost a totally different trick. And I believe it was probably Rodney who pioneered it. Certainly in his freestyle days he invented all the basic ollie variations that new schoolers use, including kickflips, impossibles, nollies, etc.
Also, I grew up skating the same park as Jeff Phillips. Guess what -- Jeff could do freestyle -- I saw him do it many times. Jeff was an all around great skateboarder. He had a real appreciation for freestyle. Phillips was also a great guy, and would always encourage any kind of skateboarding, whether it was old guys on longboards, freestylers, or vert riders.
So anyway, my purpose here is not to get all hostile, but really, whats the point in being such a negative guy in regards to fellow skateboarders?
Oh yeah -- Coleman is bad ass. Don't race him -- you'll lose.

I've got video footage of Jay Adams and Alva doing freestyle at a contest - it may or may not be Del Mar, I thought it was. Either way, it just shows that there are a lot of cool ways to ride - including pools, pipes and banks. It sounds like you just don't like old guys who like to ride hills..that's your prejudice. We can handle it. As for showing off for our kids...that's what good old farts do. Rotten old farts just ignore them and are bitter about being rotten old farts.

from what i recall at the del mar contest the skaters you mentioned did not do freestyle. they did bank riding on flat ground and surfing moves on their boards. one person a while back was right. there's a lot of defensive people here.
russ howell and the carasco bros. are good. pools are better. banks are better. ramps are better. i don't think it's narrow minded. you on your freestyle boards and longboards are people that don't want to progress. i've seen the kooks at huntington beach before and at venice beach. and i've seen pool riding at it best. alva, alba, lance, cab, hosoi...they're all still skating. there's a ton of old schoolers at the vans parks nowadays, and assorted skateparks getting radical.
i just got a kick out of the dudes on their l-boards waving their arms around as they did kickturns to resemble riding pipeline or waimea bay.
don't get me wrong here...long boards aren't bad if you use them the right way....in a pool. i've seen guys ride pools on a 36 incher many times.
"hey honey...i can still ride..on a long board. now our son will love me even more. sonny, in my day...." how pathetic.

If I recall, most of the "pool" riders you refer to were also freestyle "kooks" and slalom racers. Didn't Alva, Adams, Peralta, etc. introduce the surf/slide style of freestyle at Del Mar? (What kooks!) Didn't Alva beat Henry Hester in slalom at the World Championships in '77? (What a loser!) Those guys were well rounded and enjoyed almost all styles of skating. Sure, once the park/pool thing exploded, it became the main way for guys to ride - basically killing slalom, freestyle and GS. But now that these other forms are coming back - as well as the snowboard related downhill carving - there's plenty of pleasure to be found in many ways of skating. If you prefer to define skateboarding as narrowly as you do, it is just a reflection of your narrow, negative mind. I'm glad I don't have to live inside your aggressive, defensive juvenile head. Enjoy your time in negativeland.
ps. you've probably never gone over 20 mph in your life. Vert may be crazy, but it isn't fast. When you do 40, write us back and speak from a place where some knowledge exists.

i wouldn't go near a longboard or enter a competition. one thing's for sure that i know of. alan gelfand did the first ollie. note: he was a pool/ramp rider.
freestyle always took back seat to the pool pioneers such as alva, steve alba, inouye, jayboy adams, mcgill, blender, hosoi, jeff phillips, etc. i can go on forever with the historical figures. this longboarding craze is totally a fad and will end that way in a while.
you computer geek longboarders will never be part of what skateboarding is. skateboarding is a radical sport and pool riding rules. check out the poolrider page on the internet to be schooled. i piss on your slalom track! happy chanukah! viva los pools!!!!!!!

I'm having trouble putting words to my feelings on this one ,don't lump mr."I was there" in with shortboarders,he's a geek who probabely won't be able to stand on any type of skateboard when he's 40 never mind 50. Colemans'victory is cool and the geek will never take the Coleman challenge, theres a lot of cool stuff going on in shortboarding, and longboarding as well,a little mutual respect would go a long way.
