I was skitching a ride on a car at about 35mph when the car stopped an I ran a stop sign. I clipped a Fed Ex truck and broke my left leg, my left hip, and my back in two places. It took 2 years for me to recover.

Yeah right the stand up record is only at 62-63 mph right now, you're a liar.

A note to Jeanne
Let me start by saying that I'm sorry for your loss. It's always tragic when someone so young dies. I do know that at least 5 people have died from skateboarding accidents in San Diego county over the last about 2 1/2 years. I know that at least one of them was hill riding. He was a 23-year-old who had surfed and skated for years.
I'll take what Jeanne said a step further. Even if you are in complete control, there are things that are beyond your control. Traffic, road conditions, and equipment failures are all out of your control. How many times have we read about someone eating it because a car ran a stop sign? Road conditions are a bit easier to control, but still there are things you miss. You might have ridden a hill dozens of times, but sometimes you don't see that manhole cover, grate, pothole, oil slick, substitute your least favorite road hazard here, until it's too late. Ever break a truck or a bearing?
About the only thing you can do is take precautions. My understanding is that most skateboarding deaths come from severe head trauma, and there's a very simple thing you can do to prevent that, wear a helmet. I started wearing one all of the time about a year and a half ago. At first, I felt stupid wearing it, especially when I wasn't doing anything dangerous, like cruising the beach. Now, I feel stupid when I don't wear it. I'll get a block or two from the car and realize that I left it in the trunk. Then, the whole way back to the car to retreive it, I'm thinking "God, this would be a stupid way to die." I started wearing it all of the time, so I don't have to make judgment calls on whether I really need it or not. Am I going to be going fast enough at the bottom of this hill to really need a helmet. That's a hard call to make from the top looking down.
Sure, it's a little embarrassing the first time you put on the brain bucket. You feel like you look like a dork. Hell, you probably do look like a dork, but you'd look like much more of a dork in the Intensive Care Unit in a coma you may never come out of. Try wearing a helmet for a month, and I promise you'll feel naked without it.
Skating safe means control, but it also means using the proper equipment. And in my opinion, a helmet is just as vital as a urethane wheels or precision bearings.

Just a note of warning. Don't get to feeling too smart. Skateboarding can be a hazardous activity. My son died at age 15 last November due to a head injury, falling at a high speed on a hill. He was not stupid, just a great all American adolescent having fun. Anyone know of other deaths due to skateboarding accidents or severe and permanent head injuries, spinal cord injuries? One minute an injury is cool and the next minute it crosses a line that is no longer cool. You are not in complete control. Be aware, you are so special to your families.

Talking about little crashes: some days ago, I was cruising at about 10 mpH on the sidewalk with my PC Slalomboard with ACS trucks. Behind me, somebody called my name and I looked back, left the sidewalk with my board and fell ON MY EYE! To be exact, I fell on the bone just under the eye, but the next day nobody beleived me and everybody thought I'd have gotten into a fight.

DON'T YOU JUST HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE GO HARD ON THEIR SKATEBOARDS ONLY WHEN THERE IS A CAMERA ABOUT?
I KNOW A GUY WHO IS TOO SCARED TO GO DOWN MOST HILLS WITHOUT SCRAPING HIS SHOE DOWN. WHEN THE CAMERA CAME OUT, HE WENT HARD OUT AND COULDN'T CONTROL HIS SPEED. HE CRASHED INTO A WALL, GOT A COUPLE OF SCRAPES AND NOW WALKS AROUND WITH HIS SHIRT OFF TO SHOW OFF LIKE HE'S A FULL ON SPEED DEMON.

When are morons going to stop bombing hills on conventional trucks? (Here's a *clue*... they all are prone to high-speed wobbles!) Try a Randal or Seismic truck if you value your skin.

I was once doing this local hill with my friend jamie. Its not all that big u can max out at like 30-35. But anyways we had just hit up the steepest drop in the hill and we had all our speed. Then i noticed jamie started to get some phat speed wobbles. so i was like oh shit hes goin down. he fell and rolled...but his board went right in front of me!!! i turned so hard to avoid it and i did...but comeing out of that i got mass speed wobbles and thats what i remember because the next thing i knew i was on the ground w/ some fat lady in a van asking are u alright?? i said yeah and she took off. i stood up and then felt the pain...all in my right side. i had hit my head (we were jus wearing regular clothes)shoulder, hip and leg. jaimes left sidee got all fuct up too. That night above my eye it swelled up to about the size of a golf ball with blood. it stayed that way for about 3 weeks before going down. and for about a month after that i had a blood hemorage in my right eye. it suct. that was my worst spill.

O.K.... Here's a "little" crash story. Went to the beach a couple weekends ago for a nice cruise. Had already made a nice run up one side of the beach and came back for rum punches. Tipped a couple of those...grabbed a beer and a cigar for the next cruise. Gave the old Cosmic I with RII's and generic 65mm red urethanes a couple pushes and off i went. Cruised acroos the street and aimed up the sloped part of the sidewalk. Went around some lady and her kids and about the time I looked back, I launched! At 6' and 185lbs, I am sure it wasn't a pretty sight when I hit the deck. But mind you I did it in style...I still had the lit cigar in my left hand, completely in tact and still smoking, and the beer was in my right hand, unspilled, but the can did crumple just a tad...and hardly any fizz over-flow. So, I had to maintain the essence of what I set out to do, got back my board and cruised for another 30 minutes...(when my cigar finally quit...the beer died shortly after the crash). I suppose there are a few lessons here...in order to avoid road-rash and severe hip bruising, let go of the cigar and beer! The other lesson might be, skate carefully after sucking down rum punch before lunch! But if you are into style...gotta give me a hand for form in my launch and landing!

namon I noticed that too. How come nobody mentions the little crashes? Like when you are rolling down the sidewalk at about 15mph and you hit a crack and fall on your head It's always,"so I was bombing this hill, and it was like so steap I was upside down. I must've been going at least 70 and I hit an insect and my trucks vaporized and...etc"

I live in Denver, so my friend geoff and i decided to head towards the mountains to find some hills. We get to a neighborhood in the foothills and find a nice hill. We start driving up and it keeps going. So we keep driving up. Eventually, about a mile later and about 400 verticle feet we find the top. Being relatively inexperianced about bombing hills we think nothing of the grade and throw on our helmets (at the last minute) and take off. About 100 feet into the ride I'm thinking that i want off. with no pads this is getting scary. I'm following geoff, so when he starts to get speed wobbles i knew they were probably coming to me too. this hill is insanely steep with nothing but gravel shoulders on either side no real escape route. as i start approaching about 30-35 the speed wobles get me and my only option is to jump and try to run. four steps later i'm laid out horiztally bouncing off my hip and elbow and sliding on the pavement on my back being amazed that im actually sliding on pavement. geoff, amazingly enough makes it over two consecutive speed bumps (long rolling ones)at about 35 before he's thrown straight to his elbow and hip. it was awesome. as we were driving down the hill later we stopped to examine the 20 foot long green skid mark left on the road by geoff's helmet. we then thanked our helmets for saving our lives, promised we would always wear them and drove home to our medical supplies. (about the actual speed- i agree that it is pretty impossible to really gauge your speed on a board, but the whole sliding on pavement thing leads me to believe it was a pretty good clip.)

alright...here's the scenario...11pm sunday night, bombing this hill in delaware on my first home-made longboard. it's 48", 5.5" wide (i know, but it was my first) with secondhand ventures that were so loose they practically rattled. (i was used to shortboards) and krypto 70mms. anyhow, after the wobbles got bad i dismounted the hard way and knocked both my front teeth out to the nerve. lucky me, i only got minimal road rash on my chin.
