Wider trucks and longer wheelbases do about the same thing they slow up the steering and make things more controlable at higher speeds. This could work against you though ,If you get up to lets say 35 and even though you feel in control because of the stability ,your back wheels drift out a little bit more than you expect, damn your heading for the curb and the slide may have scrubed some speed, so you may not be able to make corrections quick enough,do what you want ,its all good, just take enough time to get used to your new ride.

Another question: If I make my board out of a snowboard, will it last? Also, if I cut wheel grooves in the sides, will this cause the snowboard to snap easily?

Can someone tell me how much board length and truck width affect sliding? I used to ride a 56" Envy('59 classic or something like that was the model) with 215mm trucks, and I could slide well on that, but I'm thinking of taking a 64" snowboard and mounting 250mm eXkate trucks on it. Would this board be tough to pull turns and slides on?

My friend has an old slalom board. It's fiberglass and I get slivers everytime I touch it. Is there some way to seal it or something?

In response to the whole plexiglass board thing... I was curious to see if anyone's tried making a deck out of lexan? I wouldn't know where you could purchase sheets of the stuff, but I know that it's a pretty tough material. If anyone tries this, let me know how it turns out.

try "house of hardwoods" in west L.A. They've got 13 ply baltic birch. It's is referred to as 3/4" but is closer to 5/8". Max length is 60". It's about $10 for 12x60.

Hey, if your looking quality wood you should look into using an old single water ski. they are perfect, ive mad several myself along with some of my friends and all of them shred.

I am having a hard time finding the quality wood that I need. I am looking for 1/2 to 3/4 inch w/ as many ply as I can get, preferably 7ply and up. The wood can vary in types. Most lumber yards only carry 5ply and the quality is poor. Does anyone have any adresses,or suggestions.

I've built 3 decks from oldschool wooden water skis that work great. You should try & see how much flex the ski has before you buy it. My first & favorite deck is stiffer than my other 2. It has trucks from an old Vision board I found at a thrift store and Bones Bombers for wheels. It cost less than $50 to make (the ski was free, $6 for the old Vison skate board, & $42 for the new wheels & bearings)The key to building these boards I've built is making sure you measure accurately where to drill your holes for the trucks and making sure you have the end cuts centered and symetrical.

When I say homemade board I include the trucks.Yeah the stroker project (check vintage gear for a glimce of the shaky original) is alive and well and now it includes the deck 45" long with a billet 7075 t7 frame and a wooden standing area that has not been constructed yet. The trucks features include fully machined 7075 t6 truck parts sealed bearings at all pivots three minature bearings in each of the cromoly steering knuckles alot of very precise hardware. I have die stripper springs for tension with foam elastomers to boost the later spring rate, I'm using cherry bombs 82mm and was really taken by there largeness, they should be awesome, I only have the main spars connecting the trucks, with only a totally rigid 3inch wide double beam structure to stand on the trucks seem to be responcive already ,tight but effective with a 10 to 11 inch wide deck this board is gonna be quite loose. I've been considering adding a truck brake, a button or lever that would apply restrictive friction to the trucks.

That sounds like a sweet pintail to me. I say don't lament the
weight- it might slow your acceleration a little, but it will
give you lots of momentum and speed, not to mention strong arms.

I finished my 10" x 55" longboard and I used 10 layer Finland birch. It is 1"thick and have a 1,25" flex. It is a pintail design with old indys and double diamont 72mm 78A wheels. Deck costs about 2 dollars to made and complete about 15 dollars (second hand trucks, grips, painting, etc.). Bad thing is weight.

hi!
i´m thinking of building a board, I can´t afford to by one.
does anyone have a nice shape for a board mainly for carving and crusing?
it is´nt easy finding anything else than sector9 in sweden.
I like the shape of the "luke nosewalker" but it´s to long, would that shape work on a shorter board?

I made a 10" x 48" longboard (38" wheelbase) out of 3/4" oak plywood and it was too flexy. I could hear it cracking as I bounced up and down on it. So, if anybody is thinking of making a longboard out of oak plywood, make get better or thicker plywood and maybe make the wheelbase not as long.
I'm going to try and shorten the wheelbase by 6" and see if that helps. The good part is that a board only costs about $6 to make so you don't wind up spending much money.

Does anyone know of any websites where I can learn more aboutusing these materials? This includes sources of materials, costs of materials, performance differences, et6c. etc. I am looking into making some boards that are different from the markets. Any help is appreciated.

Hey Andrew,
The boards sound cool. I think most people avoid carbon fiber
because it is so expensive. It does make awsome decks though
if you use it the right way. Let us know how they turn out.

I'm making three kinds of boards in the next few days... but there are a few details I'm trying to work out. I'm building two glass-fibre boards and one carbon-fibre board.
Here are my questions:
1. with the glass-fibre boards, I'm planning to use plywood as my sandwich layer. I noticed most boards use V-lam woods such as maple. What is the disadvantage with ply?
2. why don't more companies use carbon fibre? bad flex properties?

I finished making a deck that's about 46" by 9 1/2". The problem is that it flexes so much that I can hear it crack. So, I put a metal strip down the middle, and it works great. I set it up with Independent 215's, China Bones, and Spitfire 65mm wheels (maybe too hard). So far, so good.
