Velcro
On 9/21/2000 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

Like with everything there's common velcro, like from a fabric store, and then there's really heavy weight velcro, with serious hold. Now of course i'd have to go with the later, but i havn't seen it for sale, the thin stuff, and velcro in general, just doesn't seem like something i'd cling to in an activity that can get as intense as downhill sliding , so i go with the rather time consuming but pretty much fail safe method of punching holes in the gloves, making recessed holes and lacing the uhmw (plastic)on to the gloves. For instance,I lace each corner of the palm piece onto the glove, tie it off with a double knot(knot between the plastic and the glove)cut the lace short, and move on to the next corner,i sho goo the knots when i'm done,if a single knot fails or lace tears, like sliding over a crack, manhole, driveway enterance ect.ect. only one corner comes loose, the whole thing doesn't unravel.I don't consider downhill to be a no money, lazy, hippy dippy substitute for surfing, things that can't be bought need to be made, and anybody that can't spend the time,or money,to make something as cool as really solid slider gloves are in the wrong sport, actually its a good thing that slider gloves are not available, they're a liability nightmare for everyone involved in selling or making them, and its sort of a selection process, those who can't figure out how to make them probabely shouldn't be skating at that level.

Chris - Ironclad
On 9/20/2000 waxfoot wrote in from (63.10.nnn.nnn)

Ah, that answers my question about the IronClad gloves link I saw on your site. I checked it out, but the gloves themselves didn't look tough enough to slide. Here's a bunch of questions for you...

How are the gloves themselves - pretty tough/comfortable?

Why did you chose them over just the standard $6 work gloves?

So the velcro seems to hold the UHMW slide pieces on ok? I like the velcro idea as it sounds like you can replace the slide pieces without having to chuck the whole thing and start again.

Is that a personal choice to leave your fingers exposed? You don't wear through them?

Looking forward to your pictures and any construction advice you have. Hugh just has the two kinds shown on his site, and I was never able to get a picture out of Herbn of his sliders....

Iron Clad Gloves
On 9/20/2000 Chris Chaput wrote in from (63.168.nnn.nnn)

Waxfoot, The gloves I use are a workman's glove made by Ironclad. They are designed for construction workers but I bought a bunch of velcro that I sew onto the palms (some use Shoe Goo here), and put the "hook" side of the velcro on one side of some UHMW plastic pieces that are cut to size so that they keep your fingers exposed to grab your board. You can make a number of slide pieces of different thicknesses and shapes, and "rip" them off and change them for different conditions. Cliff Coleman tipped me off about the velcro. I'll be posting some pictures soon. Check out: McMaster.com for UHMH in 3/8" or 1/2" sheets.

sliding gloves
On 9/20/2000 waxfoot wrote in from (63.10.nnn.nnn)

Hey Chris, what kind of sliding gloves are you using? I'm trying to make a more functional type of glove that I can actually grip the board with - like where the sliding pieces on the palm and fingers are separate. Any suggestions?

Hey anyone have suggestions on a good pair of wrist guards? Being able to order them online would be a bonus as well, as there is only one skate shop on the big island and it's a 2 hour drive away. Might as well pay shipping instead of gas $.....

slider gloves
On 8/30/2000 Mike G wrote in from (64.7.nnn.nnn)

Well i made some proto type gloves (only took 15 minutes so there not too fancy) and they work ok. I cut a large pice of cutting board enough so my hand wont be hanging off and i drilled 4 holed in it. I then grinded little open "tunnels" so i can put shoe laces to hold the cutting board to my hand then i put the shoe laces in the holes and strapped it on to my glove. its pretty crummy so it looks like i might use rivets and silicon to hold the glove on. Thanks a lot herbn and hugh r!

I went over to my pictures file, clicked copy, came back here hoping to click paste, but it wasn't lit.Why can't things be that easy? Anyway gluing polyethelenes is not a sturdy connection,no matter what anybody says,if it works for them they don't slide hard and they don't speak about it when it comes loose. You need to drill holes in pairs, make a recess for laces to tie the plastic pieces on to the palm, and around the fingers, fill the fingers so you can tie the laces around them, sho goo, shoe patch, silicon glue, the laces to the back of the fingers and you'll be set, for a long time, it takes a while but its much more secure than a sheet of plastic with a strap to put your hand through.

Sliding gloves
On 8/28/2000 Mike G wrote in from (64.7.nnn.nnn)

I learned how to slide using working gloves with some wrist garuds strapped on. Well after 30 minutes of sliding they wore out and snapped. I got my moms old cutting board and i cut a piece to size and i dont know what is good to attach the glove to the cutting board. What should i use? Someone help me please!

gigantic narrow heads
On 8/25/2000 hugh r wrote in from (205.216.nnn.nnn)

Oh to have a more narrow head!! Life would be so much better and I would be so much more attractive to the women if I didn't have such a bulbous mellon!

Neil, try adding some foam strips on the sides of your helmet. You may be able to get some pieces from a bicycle shop that have sticky on one side. Dont't get the sticky on both sides because of the excessive hair removal it causes.

But seriously, extra foam pieces may help with the side to side slop... HR

Big head
On 8/25/2000 Neil G wrote in from (198.169.nnn.nnn)

Oh, yeah - I had to lengthen the straps on my Flyaway. My problem is not only size though, but head shape. Most XL stuff doesn't fit at all, and the XXL stuff tends to fit tight front to back, but wiggle side to side due to my long narrow head. Mom claims it's a result of sitting up in bed during labour. I figure I'm just that much more aerodynamic.

big head helmets

I too have a rather large cranium that is necessary to house and protect my gigantic brain... 24" around my pumpkin shaped noggin.

I believe that the problem for must of us big head guys is not the size of the XXL helmets that don't fit right... but rather the chin straps. What I have found necessary to do on skate helmets is to make a longer chin strap... HR

Big heads
On 8/24/2000 Neil G wrote in from (198.169.nnn.nnn)

I have a super hard time finding stuff to fit (24" head, and also narrower than normal). I barely squish into a Giro XXL bike helmet. I have an old Jay Adams flyaway that fits. It has thick open cell foam that squishes nicely. I *thought* that they were still available somewheres.

Butt Plates
On 8/13/2000 MTW wrote in from (207.41.nnn.nnn)

Bob, i glued some plastic to an old pair of pants and it slid very well.
athough maybe too well, it was like i was on ice. i had some 3/16"
polypropylene perforated sheet that i cut into hexagons about
2" across. then i shoe gooed them on my butt. my pants looked like a
tile floor the holes in the plastic act as an anchor for the glue.
the glue gets pressed into the holes and dries.
none have come off so far.
the tile method allows one to still have flex in your clothes.
i leave about an 1/8" gap between tiles.
i got the idea from the spaceshuttle

we can call them re-entry tiles :)
