Austin Sports Gear Extreme Shorts
On 12/6/2001 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

AKA the newer, hipper title: "Skatz Shortz Elite"
well, I got these in the mail just now, only to send' em back again. I'm size 34-36 waist, and not a very large dude 5'11, 185, and the L shorts are just way too ...short. The idea, I think, is that they're supposed to ride like hockey shorts, so the shorts come up to about your belly button and cover your pelvis. Ain't happenin'. The tailbone pad fits me more like kotex. Damn the deferred gratification of e-commerce! Maybe I just have a big ass. The shipping lady, Sue, was quite nice, though, and hopefully I will have a new, better fitting pair soon. I'm just glad this happened during their "no shipping" special.

About the shorts themselves: good quality lycra, I think, but why skimp on the interior material? The pads are removable and their pockets are made out of some pretty flimsy-feeling cotton (almost transparent). Maybe it's for breathability, but when you have to tell people to grab the pocket and the pad when pulling up the shorts to prevent tearing, I just have to kind of laugh. The pads are a fairly thin rubber-y foam (that's the technical name for it) molded in a star-hexagon waffle pattern. Aeration? Structural integrity? I don't know. Took a few practise spills on the kitchen's hardwood floor and hip checks into the brick wall: the results were only so-so, maybe because of the poor fit. I will have to wait for some serious bailing in proper shorts or until somebody posts up on the same before I can say "yes, these are good protective gear for your money." Would be curious to see the results of a side-by-side comparison of ASG/SzSz and Crash Pads.

Austin Extreme Shorts
On 12/4/2001 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

hey, all, thanks for the feedback, I went with the austin shorts just because they are more affordable for me. Just ordered them, and wanted to let anyone know who cares that they are having a December special... no shipping on all order in US/Canada. So that's saving like 10 dollars or something-33 dollars even for the shorts. pretty good.

which ones
On 12/3/2001 Duane wrote in from (209.218.nnn.nnn)

I can vouch for the Pro Designed wrist braces and knee pads. The construction is first rate, they are expensive, though. Unless you are bailing on big vertical walls, get the lighter of the knee pads, the heavy-duty ones are too bulky for street / downhill skating. I did not like the elbow pads, not enough freedom of movement.

elbow. knee and wrist... which make?
On 12/3/2001 gavin wrote in from (194.82.nnn.nnn)

after 15 or so years stirling service my rector protectors are finally about to give up, so its time for some new stuff. prob is that no local shop stocks a good range so i'm going to have to buy mail order, the choices available are rector fat boys, TSG force and Pro Designed single caps. can anyone give me an objective view (fit, protection, freedom of movement, quality of material/construction etc) on any of these?

thanks

Re caps
On 11/29/2001 Herbn wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

My replys to these questions are almost to predictable, can anybody guess what my reply will be? yes yes Hugh, stop waving your hand, what is your guess? Hugh,"you made them, right?" Yes Hugh very good i've made recaps,it was along time ago and they where wavy and imperfect but i took 1/8 inch UHMW heated it with a torch and tried to bend it around a plaster mold,it wasn't time efficient enough, or aestheticly purdy but a set of UHMW recaps last for freakin ever.Careful not to make them to long or they'll dig into your shin, but other than that, go nuts. We used to tape them on with loops of duct tape and a little duct tape around the edges(where you don't slide) my recaps were like those rectangular toboggens only small,i tried to bend the bottom edge out so it wouldn't dig in but i eventually just trimmed them. Re attach original caps with leather laces, baseball mitt repair kit,and also those loops of duct tape. Look up plastic in your yellow pages HD polyethelene is ok(kind of like original caps) but UHMW is the poop.

Rector Fat-Boy Recaps
On 11/28/2001 Livmojoe wrote in from (12.108.nnn.nnn)

Anybody have a source for recaps for Rector Fat-Boy knee pads? Remember the old plastic cap that was just like the ones that came on the pads but without the holes...they attached with double backed/velcro tape over the worn one.
Do they still make them? I've checked a few local shops and unfortunately because there's been a trend for the last few years to skate without pads, they don't seem to carry them (ie, noboby is wearing theirs out).

Please help out an old vert dog. Post a reply or write me back.

Thanks,
JD

any feedback on the padded shorts purchases? I'm about to hit the Vans skatepark in NoVa after rehabbing a busted meniscus knee operation, and since I've never really skated big bowls before, I figure I probably could use some protectin. The Austin Extreme shorts look promising... and cheap. how are they and the crash pad shorts in terms of bulkiness/ restriction of movement?

sliding shorts
On 11/26/2001 loneskater wrote in from (159.87.nnn.nnn)

well, no one replied since i wrote below, i wore them anyway at La Costa thinking they were better than nothing, and they were. i launched off the starting ramp hard and landed on my ass and right elbow. sliding as well as impact, no damage thanks to elbow pad. no abrasion on the ass. no damage other than pride. i wore them under my shorts, they don't bunch. for 28 dollars i got my moneys worth and will use them in the future. these would not stop a bone break from a point impact like the edge of a curb, but are more for sliding.

recently i came across a baseball sliding short by Mizuno,i doesen't have great padding, but it looks great for absorbing a little slide. especially with some healthy shorts. since they are compression shorts they wouldn't ride like underwear. somebody must have tried em, any thoughts? this would be for slalom racing, not too much restriction but in slalom, i never know which way or at the worst moment i un-ass my deck. thanks, george.

Shout stain remover-laundry pre spotter
On 10/24/2001 jg wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

We don't need no stinking pads. I hate pad funk. I wash my pads - inside out - about every 4 or 5 times I use them. Cold water- gentle cycle and let them air dry. They smell like new- I have had them for 8 years.

I had a pair of pawn leather kevlar gloves. Used them a lot-they stunk. Great glove, but the "pad funk" was so bad my back of my hands would smell for a day after I used them- no soap could get that out short of using some lava and a nailbrush, nasty.

I couldn't find any new pairs so I decided to take the risk to wash them. Previous washings with dawn dishwashing soap and tide had been a complete failure with the pad funk completely dominating. I figured these were a lost cause.

I turned the gloves inside out and drenched the cloth inside part with Shout. Then I squeezed them like I was rinsing out a wash cloth a few times. I threw them in a load of laundry with some towels in warm water.

After the first wash 98% of the pad funk was gone after the gloves airdried.

I repeated the shout proceedure. Now my gloves have 0% pad funk even after wearing them for a week so far.

I treated the outside of the glove with leather conditioner for car seats. LIKE NEW!

Hip pads / Shorts
On 10/14/2001 BMAN wrote in from (12.80.nnn.nnn)

I just ran across some interesting pads for Hockey. they are just a padded under short and the lower leg thigh pad needs to be cut off. they will work awesome as the padding is sufficient but not too heavy or thick. At $30 I thinks its a wise buy for myself. I will pick 'em up and pass the info on.

Padded Shorts
On 10/14/2001 BMAN wrote in from (12.80.nnn.nnn)

I have noticed that there isnt anything regarding Padded Shorts. Somethiing that in my old skate days was a must due to having a softball sized hipper drained several times. This was done with a hypodermic needle after a fall at a race or in a bowl. Not to mention the pain and suffering afterwards.
Now being an older "wiser" (?) man I remember the old Rector shorts. Nonne to be found these days. Someone mentioned roller hockey shorts but too bulky unless I am looking at the wrong ones.
I can't afford to be laid up in pain. Any Ideas other than DIY?

helmets galore
On 10/9/2001 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

for those of you seeking helmet action, check out

http://www.bhsi.org/helmet01.htm

and the bhsi website in general for more info on helmet safety and design than you probably would ever want to know. Not that many skaters would use the "alien head-pod" design of a lot of bike helmets out there, but it's good to know that ye olde "bowling-ball-meets-military-helmet" skate helmet design which some people hate (I like it) actually is probably one of the safest.

Some bike companies are also redesigning their open-face skate-style helmets to look a little spiffier, see the specialized p-3, for example.

The BHSI looks like such a good resource, I'm surprised it isn't in the links page, considering all the doctrinaire helmet-wearers posting.

Rector Pads

I've found a pretty good deal online for some Rector knee and elbow pads. My question is if anyone is familiar with the sizing of these pads. Unfortunately there is nobody that carries them around here so I can't try them on. I'm 6' and around 173# so was thinking medium.

Aero Helmet
On 10/4/2001 Doc wrote in from (172.132.nnn.nnn)

Roger, no need to be bummed out, as my main motivation in selling my helmet biz is to ensure that this product will always be available to the racers and the sport that releys on them. Right now I am not able to produce them at them at the rate of current demand... These old bones cant work the shop hours I once was able to. That is why I'm putting the biz up for grabs. Dont worry, I am going to be very selective in who I sell it to. The buyer has to be qualified, in it for the long run, and preferably somebody who is already established in the DH skate industry. Another condition of the sale is that I will be involved as a consultant to ensure that the high quality standards that have made this helmet what it is will be continued. I have invested many years into the development of this product to make it the industry standard and I can assure you and all racers worldwide that this legacy will continued in the hands of the new owners.

leathers
On 10/3/2001 roger wrote in from (66.51.nnn.nnn)

Rich, I went the cheap route for leathers ($330USD). This was a very good choice for me because I really use my leathers. Each day of riding I will go down at least a couple of times, hardly a spot is left that is not scraped up and much of it is held together by rivets or temporarily with duct tape. They are still holding together well, fit pretty good, and am really getting my money out of them. Best investment I have ever made. When I am skating at level where every bit of aero helps, then I will consider getting a custom suit ($1200?), but right now I would rather have a custom aero helmet.

I'm really bummed about the news from Doc GoFast.

Thanks for your reply Roger.

I'v been working my ass off to make this money ,but man is it gonna be worth it!

My plan was to stick the UHMW to the palms, i also want to try get a neck roll. The helmet brand doesn't bother me, i just want a quality helmet. I have been looking around for the Bieffe GPR but haven't had any success.
I'm currently in the uk the diversty of companies willing to make custom suits here is not that great - unlike the u.s. If i wanted a custom suit here it would cost me £500+ more than the Dainese suit(£630) i want. - i have some money but thats just too much.

How much would a custom suit in the U.S. cost? And what company would you recommend?

i plan on buying most of this stuff next Saturday unless i can find a better deal somewhere else.

See you at the 2002DHX - (if they let me in again)
