Hobie Flex

Eric,my Hobie(the one you rode)is mounted at 22-1/4",with the axles being 23-1/8" apart.Mine is from 1978,I think, and the Trackers I've had for at least that long.I'm now running it with Pacers up front and C-62 Pinks at the rear.Sometimes 'Vintage' isn't so slow!

Just wondering what the wheelbase on the cutaway slalom was. That might be complicated if there was more then one model, but I'm thinking (year) was 77ish?

other decks
On 8/1/2001 lone skater wrote in from (159.87.nnn.nnn)

it appears at least among the last several entries to this site alot of you are looking for original G&S's or Turner's. there are other decks to look for. Santa Cruz made a copy of the fibreflex. Lightning Bolt (when owned by Gerry Lopez) made an interesting and $ slalom board. personally the only trucks to ride were Bennets or Trackers until Indy's came out. according to an old skateboarder mag, an original Greg Weaver model Majaraja went for $43. in 1978 dollars. that was a boatload of money to come up with when you were a kid. i am really stoked to find this site. it was after somebody tried to get my stuff that i found it. i did not know it existed, what a great site and i appreciate all the old guys still out there as well.

What G&S do I have - PS
On 8/1/2001 Grant wrote in from (212.42.nnn.nnn)

I should have said.. Its completly flat, (apart from the kicktail) so its not a bowlrider and looking in the truck holes I cant see any definite layers of ply's in there. Actually it looks more like MDF!!!

Also, It has the old style rubber grip and on top it has the old long logo (not the shield type of logo) the Gordan and Smith with a black line through one. amnd on the bottom there is just a big G & S sticker of red on orange..

I'll post some pick later on if that helps.

Cheers again

What G&S do I have???
On 8/1/2001 Grant wrote in from (212.42.nnn.nnn)

I've just picked up an old G&S Fiberflex board. Its 27" long, just under 6.5" wide at it widest, ponted nose, small kicktail.

It has one layer (it looks like) of yellow glass top and bottom but, and here the confusing bit, the middle is not make up of ply's but is one looks like glass. Atleast that what you see from the sidewall, I guess there could be ply's inside, but im certainly not going to cut into it to find out :)

Can anyone tell me what model this is. I'm guessing a kicktail from the '80's, but hey.. what do I know. The first Fiberflex I had was a Bowlrider which had visible ply's

Cheers in advance.

On 7/31/2001 lone skater wrote in from (159.87.nnn.nnn)

thanks, i don't consider myself too much alone. i think it is kinda neat that some of us survived. i grew up on the east coast, s fla. i skated skateboard heaven, solid surf, nasworthy's cadillac wheels in Lighthouse Point. Later, i moved to san diego and currently live in northern az. i sometimes skate Flagstaff or Chandler parks. i got some secret spots as well. i think i will acquire a new G&S. i probably will save most of my old stuff. lots of 60's & 70's stuff, like a Hobie Super Surfer with readable clay wheels as well as the prior mentioned gear. thanks for the input. i find it a little unreal after all i/we have gone through to keep skating somebody will still try and be greedy. our own kind, f***ing sellouts. i heard the japanese bought alot of Dogtown stuff. can't blame em it is collectable. the only board i really regret getting rid of was a Santa Cruz Bevel. i always coveted a Caster. keep skatin'.

Lone stuff
On 7/31/2001 Duane wrote in from (63.21.nnn.nnn)

Based on ebay prices, good condition or better: gullwings $150+, trackers fulls 40-75, a little more for mids, boards, don't know, the skateboarder magazines are the jewel, believe it or not, from '75 to '79 about $20 each, more for "famous" issues, if they are complete. That's over a grand for the five years!

Collectibles
On 7/31/2001 GBJ wrote in from (24.18.nnn.nnn)

Lone Skater, Your equipment has the potential of being quite valuable, depending on its' condition. It's not really possible to determine what the final sale price might be, if you were to sell it on an auction website, like SoulGarage.com. In good to excellent condition, the Maharajah is probably worth quite a bit, and you can probably get over $200 (a guess!) for the original split-axle Gullwings. My advice to you would be to encourage you to watch SoulGarage.com and EBay (because the volume's still higher there) and watch for similar items. This will help you get a feel for the value of the equipment. My other advice, since you're one of us ('60s & '70s era), would be to get yourself a few slalom boards (vintage or modern), on which to mount those original Trackers and Gullwings, a few sets of appropriate wheels, and come join us for some slalom fun. There seems to be more and more grass-roots level racing going on all the time, and I think the common thread for most everyone is fun. Let us know where you're located, and, almost assuredly, someone near you will speak up and invite you to come race. Glad to hear from you, so get over being a LONE skater.

hi, i need a liitle help. been skatin since 69' and somehow saved most of my gear, maharaja/hobie, sims toft, original set gullwings and trackers. some early G&S kicktail stuff. i have skateboarder mags since 75. i still skate at 39, a z-33 or sector 9 pool w/indy's and 60mm's. i have fun. now some people tried to buy my stuff. i remeber how hard it was to get gear during the little wheel craze. now i think these people are trying to take advantage of my good nature, what is this stuff worth?

roller derby mustang #15
On 7/29/2001 Repairman Cam wrote in from (208.37.nnn.nnn)

Picked this one up at a flea market. It's way small (maybe 6"x15") with red clay roller derby wheels. The deck is rough (some water damage and chewed around the edges) but the trucks and wheels are still good. Just looking at it makes you appreciate some of the modern age gear, like urethane wheels and trucks that actually turn! I'll post some pics asap. Meantime, anybody have a clue to its worth?

Richard, send me a decent set of photo m-pegs,veiws from top, side, bottom,in light good enough to see details like sticker/wheel logos.I'll dig into my vast collection of '77-'82 skatemags(provided my old noggin' can't deduce it's vintage on sight)and let you know just what you've got.I'm NOT an expert, just someone who's been involved in the sport for a few decades who has a knack for historical data retrieval.I can't give you a value quote that matches what fools and collector's will pay on E-Bay,but I can tell you it's original retail, and current approximate worth.Contact me at ebrammer@sover.net

Fibreflex (with kicktail) sizes

From all I can gather, these decks (Bowlrider, Teamrider, Kicktail models) came in
25", 27", and 29" lengths. Does anyone out there have one longer? Now's your chance
to 'brag to the boys'!

G an S fibreflex bowlrider model
On 7/27/2001 Richard Hardcastle wrote in from (212.135.nnn.nnn)

To Mark Colden...This awesome deck is a true classic... got mine cheap after the UK craze of the 70's was well and truly over, 80 or 81 probably, still got 65 mm blue kryps and Bennett Pro Ad Tracs attached (although replaced plastic base plates with metal ones from god-knows-where some time back then.) Lost all interest around 1982 and it gathered dust til 2001 when my 10 year old nephew got a cheapo modern board for his b day. Dug it out again for comparison... the old fella still ripped like i couldnt believe and am now madly skating again at 32! No desire to get a modern set-up but would kill for a new Bowl Rider as its picked up fresh injuries already and Id hate to bash it up too much. In answer to the enquiry its between 28 and 30 inches long... Not sure exacly but 30 was long then and it wasnt much longer than most at the time. Where can Mark Colden and I turn in our quest to locate this classic deck??? answers please! G and S Site doesnt list it as far as i could tell... PS Email address not a misspelling of solidskate, solidstate is my dj moniker. Deep house, y'all...Peace out.

soulgarage.com (final entry)
On 7/23/2001 Mark wrote in from (199.46.nnn.nnn)

Well, my previous post was not on this site but a few hours, and I received a call from Jack,
one of the people in charge of soulgarage. Turns out he made a mistake in how he posted the
aforementioned auctions / pictures. He saw my post and went in and corrected the mistake,
then he called me personally to tell me what had happened. This, to me, is extremely good
'customer service'!
If anyone has had any doubts about this site, let me tell you: from my perspective, the people in
charge are "on it".
I had to clear this up, because I wouldn't want to give any negative impression about it.
Great job, guys!

soulgarage site (again)
On 7/23/2001 Mark wrote in from (199.46.nnn.nnn)

So, I got registered into the site so I can bid, and I've looked at it a few times.
Then, this morning, I'm trying to look over some new items, and when I click onto
the link to open one, I get a dialog box with this message: "enter name for
Videoactionsports at edit.store.yahoo.com". I hit 'cancel' and the auction comes up,
but with no picture. I right-click on the picture icon, and the dialog box returns.
Am I to understand that I have to 'register' on some outboard site in order to see
the photos on soulgarage.com auctions? What is going on here? Oh, and I tried all
the 'user ID, nickname, and password' stuff from registering onto soulgarage.com,
and that does not appear to be the input it is wanting.

I think soulgarage.com is a great idea, and it is something I will use, but only if
it's not a major hassle! I am not a computer expert, so if it's not fairly simple,
I won't be messing with it. If eBay can be easy (and it is), this should be, too.
