Glen thanks for the tip off on Doc Ball, I went to find out a little about him. Looks like a real loss to surfing and skating too. Still, at 94 I suppose it was coming..! We should always pay our respects to the pioneers of our sport. Just hope Doc Ball is at peace.

Suspenders and Slide bars

thx for the info glen, i ran across these terms in some poolskater's interview in the "skateboarder" mags I am reading.
would like to see some footage of the Hackett brothers with the suspenders, (before I thought suspenders were those rubber bungee/tube things that guy had in "downhill motion"), now it is been revented with the "magnet shoe/deck" idea.
I am really starting to appreciate pool/vert with regarding to the history and development in the early days reading these old articles, and especially after seeing "downhill motion" when guys are just starting to hit copping.
I am really itching to see more late 70's vert action. (dogtown footage). Any sources/recommendations?
Re the slider bars, I could use that for getting up curbs on my longbrds, bad idea?

Suspenders and Slide bars

Suspenders were a two part thing. Part 1 was a strip of velcro that you stuck on your deck like griptape. Part 2 was a foot strap, kind of went on like an old fashioned diving boot, that had velco on the bottom. You stand on your deck and could hop around. I had a 25" G&S Warptail that I had setup with this stuff. After about 30 minutes of seeing how high I could jump, I was done. the next day, stomache muscles were killing me. Dave and Paul Hackett were masters using these. Remember if you need to bail, you were attached to the deck. The velco was real strong.
Sliders were metal bars that attached between your rear trucks kingpin and about midway up your deck. They kept your rear truck from hanging up on coping or curbs that you rode up. Remember this was pre Ollie and pre nose kick. If you slammed hard enough it was a good way to break a kingpin. Once again I had one on a Lonnie Toft Sims board....for about a week.

He wasn't really vintage gear but..... Doc Ball passed away this month, Dec 5th. at age 94. he died peacefully in his sleep. He was skateboarding up until last year. He was one of the early surf photographers and filmers, one of his photos is on the contents page of this months Surfers Journal. There is a great video on him and even has some footage of him skateboarding.
http://www.crossfireproductions.com/doc_ball.htm
he is also mentioned at
http://www.legendarysurfers.com/
this is a quote from an interview
Interviewer - "How 'bout the last time surfed?" Doc - "Last June, when Grannis came up," Doc was ever quick to reply. I asked him about his skateboarding: "That's how I stay in shape," Doc declared, proudly. "You gotta keep your reflexes sharpened up. That's one of the best ways to find out how old you're getting."
He should be an inspiration to all who skate.

Oooops! Picked right up on what Dave was saying. At the time (late 70s-early 80s) I actually knew them as Grass Skis, not Turf Skis. Anyway...

That Turf Skis site is pretty cool. I haven't even thought about Turf Skis in years and years. There was a time, when I was much more serious about alpine ski racing (never nearly as accomplished as former US Ski Teamer, Dave G), I really thought they seemed like they'd be a killer summer alternative to alpine skiing. Once I recover, physically and financially, who knows?

SSofS, I still have my yellow fibreglass Pacer! My first ever board. It's still in great condition too. I also have a NOS Pacer Catalina. Both of which I'll post up on the site when I find the time.
I would love to find a Pacer Woodie. That's one of my Holy Grail items at the moment.

First an apology, this question is not technically about a skateboard, but bear with me, it at least relates to an odd way to get down a hill. Does anyone have any info (like the product name) for a pair of skis that had tank treads on them for grass skiing in downhill boots? Thanks in advance.

They have been in the UK for a while, they are sold as "the best snowboard cross trainer", presumably cos you can go from regular to fakie on the little wheel in the middle of the trucks.

One for the UK hedz... Were Pacer decks the flexiest decks ever produced? And was this for a good sound design reason or had they just missed the point totally and produced something whose flex went beyond any conceivable practical value? I'm not aware that they ever took off in the US, for example, and Im sure they saw themselves in the tradition of Fibreflex and others... Kids used these for trampoline practice! I remember thinking at the time that you needed to be a 'good skater' to ride one (and they were'nt that cheap)Looking back, though, were they maybe a tiny bit farcical, and not fulfilling any legitimate skating purpose at all... Should you really need to be a good skater just to control a deck that flexed like trampoline? Were Pacer decks, in short, a cabaret deck?

By the look of this Sims deck and the size of the model it looks like a premium that the company offered its long term clients sometime in the mid 90's.

The Sims name is now owned by Sims Snowboards. I talked with Tom about a year ago and he told me that he doesn't even the right to use his own name. He is a minority partner in the company, so he spends his time surfing and snowboarding the world.

NOS Sims

On 12/9/2001 Duane

Kevin, I think the sales of a product toward the end of its run really determines the number of NOS examples left. There are a lot of Sims and Logan solid oak boards around, because the market preference shifted faster than expected, and a lot of shops and distributors were left holding dozens of new ones, impossible to sell (at the time). A Lonnie Toft was likely to be skated very hard, and probably sold out originally. Examples can be found elsewhere, lots of NOS narrow trucks from the mid-70's, since they fell out of favor, and then lots of wide trucks from the late 80's as they fell out of favor. I've seen dozens of sets of NOS Belair Bolts for sale, but few sets of red kryptonics from the same era. It also depends on what people want to sell, there may be hundreds of good Tofts out there, just not for sale.
