Thanks Mark and PSR. Your stories and research are what make this site enjoyable. One quick question: Did Skolberg and Hutson win riding RR's in Colorado?
Court is now back is session.

Skolberg and Hutson were the only racers in the colorado circuit of 78 that ran Road Riders. Everyone else (and I mean everyone) no matter who sponsered them was at Jim Ford's trunk getting c-62's hot out of the molds. There was a problem with yellow c-62's ( and i've trashed 100's) in that the urethane mix hardened unevenly. When you wear them down, they develope flat spots and are generally useless after a few hard runs. It was indigeonous to the yellow compound and for some reason Kryptonics could not get the yellow formula right ( c-68's were just as bad). We begged Tommy Peterson (when he took over after Jim) to try it again and he came up with the blue and Pink combination. There were a few hard cores that kept the c-62 alive beyond '80, but the economics just was not justifiable. Tommy went on to create HYPER and thats the rest of the story.

To Da Farm judge; I have here a Kanoa Surf ad from Sept. 1980 that lists Blue 88a C-62 slaloms,as well as the forementioned Orange and Red ones.I'm not arguing here, just pointing out that it may be unfair to have a 1980 cutoff date for this wheel.

Jim Ford (formerly of kryptonics) produced the first version prior to the summer of'78 Colorado slalom circuit.Remember when Kryptonics only had 3 colors green blue and red (correct me if im wrong). Jim came to the races with colors(durometers) that we had never seen. I remember that white(yes-white) was the durometer of choice at one race due to the asphalt conditions. I still have dozens in blue and pink. the best durometer combintion. blue up front and pink in the back. Tommy Peterson took Jim's job at Kryptonics and continued to front all kinds of combinations for us (myself and keith Holien). get me at mccreearch@msn.com

The proceedings are over and the ruling is in: Only Orange and Yellow C-62's will be allowed at da farm. There is still plenty of time to consult ebay. Good Luck.

I think I just bought ur13's C-62's, so my opinion might be slightly prejudiced at this point. I hereby recuse myself from the proceedings. I do agree with you, c-62 would easily be the best wheel if allowed. I've got some nice lime green Sims CompII that come in at 85A, some pacers with the mega bearings, and some 60mm raised letter kryps, and some killer c-70's, so I'm covered anyway.

Thanks for your response. However, I am inclined to think the race will be far more interesting w/o c-62's. We will then see a lot of Road Riders, OJ's, Power Paws etc. which will make the race much more interesting. What's your take?

Would Hyper Stradas be considered pre-1980? I have no idea when they were manufactured.

The molds were cut in 78-79 or so but I think most production would have been in the 80's. The oldest ones were orange (85A) and yellow (?), whereas the much more common blue and pink (hard and soft) were molded well into the 80's. Probably some other colors, too. I would vote that they be allowed. I had some orange ones that came on a board with ACS651 & santa cruz slalom deck, and not a nut had been turned on that board in many, many years.

Black Kryptonics

I had 2 NOS sets of those black KRYPTOS.
They are actually 5th series wheels, and yes, they were made primarily for roller skates. The 4th series were designated "Kryptonics USA" in smaller letters, and you usually see those in 70mm red and blue flatbacks on Ebay.
The "C" series is the third series Kryptonics. "C" stands for either the third letter in the alphabet (duh) or "Core". The 70mm C-wheels got the shape change from the 2nd series...no inner lip.
AFA those DARK C-65's, I'm gonna agree with Paul W. on this one...They may not be marked with the CD designation, but sometimes those letters are pretty hard to see, even when new. I'm further convinced because I've recently seen two or three different shades of blue...some looking almost black, or a deep midnight navy blue.
I'll probably throw a bid up on 'em.

As I recall ...and I'm happy to be proven wrong about this... the black "2nd Generation" Kryptonics were actually cosmetic defects. In '79, I bought a cheap set of 70mm Kryps from a bucket of wheels stamped "CD". At the time, I tried to match the "real" colours as best I could, because some of the wheels had heavy discolouring. "CD" aside, at least the NOS Kryps that I have from the '70s are colour fast. The same couldn't be said for my NOS SIMS wheels, where the pigment seems to have gone fugitive after a couple of years.

Scabs, yup, those are the 'rollerskate' ones, likely a 72A,from about '83-'86.Last gasp for Quads before Inlines took over the great outdoors. The C-65's in black are a new one to me,so I've got no clue as to what hardness(still stumped),but they look to be from the '78-'82 time period, and are not the Freestyle wheel that came out in '80.I do remember that the CX-66 + 64 came in black in an 88A in '83-'84,when most of the CX double conicals were only to be found in 78A(street riding's infancy, right after the parks/pools got shut down). Duane, you ought bid on them anyways-How bad can old Kryps be,even if they're soft?

Thanks guys. There is a set of black ones on ebay right now, assuming they aren't blue ones that have turned black. White ones sold last week. I've never seen those. Guess I'll stick with the green. Looking for something to finish out the Alva repro, the Bones Threes I had on it sucked. The softer "mini-cube" wheels are awful, what worked in 95A did not work in 85A, too much deflection in that deep-set lip.

BoBo, I can`t say whether the Kryptos in black had the same duro as the C-65`s but they were soft like rubba. I only sold them a few months back so I can say it in current memory. The scary part is that I bought then NOS on eBay a couple years back and rode them on my ACME Fibreflex Slalom deck and sold them for more than double what I paid for them....used. Imagine if I had kept them NOS?

As I recall, the black and white kryps followed the popular red formula in duro. So they are between 75 and 80a. The rollerskate ones were the same as well. The C-65's and C-70's are a little tougher to find but can be gotten without to much expenditure. I don't recall them in 60mm.

Scabs, those were like Quad RollerSkate "outdoor" wheels (have the bevelled edge like small-core Classics/Cruise do now)and yeah, that urethane was really soft.72A is a good guess. As for Duane's C-65 in black,I don't know.Hmm,it would take something from Duane to stump me. ;)

Duane, I had the black Kryptos and they were gummy soft. Probably close to 72a. These were the wheels that had "KRYPTO" embossed on the side of the wheel. Not sure if the urethane formula may differ from the C-65?

Does anyone know how hard the black or white versions of C-65's were ? I know the red-blue-green follow the usual pattern. I don't ever remember seeing any white or black ones, but they seem to pop up for sale.
