White urithane ages/yellows,perhaps some translucents, but i have a set of wheels that came on my Duraflex,my uncle bought me the complete,all i wanted was the deck,but it came with banzai slalom trucks,and generic wide clear red wheels I knew they would suck so i took them off immediatly,they don't look like they've aged a day, totally glossy wet looking to this day,just like those finned wheels someone was asking about a week or so ago.They look just like i left them with a notch in them where i tried a hacksaw to see if they could be cut effectively:)

My problem with NOS equipment is that much of what I have seen are copies... good ones sometimes, but copies just the same.
Like my brother said, "sometimes nos means Never Old Stuff if there is no sign of any aging its probably not old!"
I collect old stuff, my brother collects old stuff, my mother collects old stuff, hell, most of my family collects old stuff. Old stuff, even when perfect, has certain charteristics that do not appear on newly mfg'd items.
I have no problem buying and using copies when I know up front that they are just that. I have a HUGE problem with items that are being represented as old, when they are not.
Lets talk about decks... E-bay is full of decks at any given time that are touted as NOS... the graphics are too nice... the shapes are the same... not a nick or scratch that assuredly should have happend in 30 years! If something looks brand new then it probably is.
I read some info on a website claiming they had found a warehouse full of old decks... such good shape that you could still smell the paint from the graphics. No duh... you could smell the paint because it was fresh, not because the decks were old!
Lets talk about wheels... 20 - 30 year old wheels (even if never ridden) will rarely look fresh off the shelves. Urathane changes color (looks cloudy or milky) over the years and with exposure. Very few truely old wheels look perfect (at least not the translucents)
Sure, there are a few guys who have kept stuff extremely well preserved. And it angers me that their stuff is cheapend by new production peices claiming to be old.
So when I use the term "NOT NOS!!" what I am saying is that I do not want to be fooled... I want old stuff that looks old... if it looks new, then it probably ain't old...

I have a somewhat well worn set of these and while they were a good wheel when they were introduced, IMHO they can't compete with todays high rebound formulations. Almost any modern 65mm wheel (except perhaps Bones Bombers) will be faster. If I were you, I'd save them (I have), or sell them, and buy some centered Power Paws, Gravity Street G's, or Kryptonics to ride.

Hugh, what's your beef with NOS stuff? Just to be clear, when I think NOS, I think stuff manufactured back in the day and never used, not stuff manufactured now to the old spec.

Ricky,these wheels were the bomb when they first arrived on the scene!The Only gripe I ever had with them was riding fast on rough tar(but that's what Red Kryptos are for!).I'd say use them wisely,or as little as possible(and this from someone who still rides vintage boards Hard)because they're fairly rare,and in demand by collectors who know.Go get some centered-bearing 65mm Power Paws,put them on your board,and put the Hesters up for sale while strolling through Morro Bay-I dunno,might even pay for your trip to the Bay!

Can't give you any good adivce on the slalom wheels (I am the worst cone runner in the state of CA... maybe the world!)
But over on the slalom forum is the acumulated slalom knowlege of the ages!
Not just because most of them are old (and I do believe that they are) but those guys know their business... HR

Hey, Give me your opinion.
Would you consider Road Rider Henry Hester's to be a good slalom wheel. I know that's what they where meant to be, but did it turn out that they really were a good slalom wheel? I got set a couple of years ago and have used them, but only a time or two. I like the way they ride. I would be more likely to go ahead and use them if I knew they were considered a good slalom wheel by the masses. I would just like to know if I'm working with a "useable" wheel. If they aren't then why use them at all and in that case just keep them in nice shape.

Bottom of the page, second board from the left... gold split axel gullwings, first run orange kryptos, original gmn bearings... (all perfect but NOT NOS!!) signed by HH... that would get me thinking pretty close to 5 bills... (throw in some strokers and I'd go even higher)

Here's my "best find" story on vintage skateboard equipment. Many years ago, a girl I was dating brought me a gift from a yard sale. It was a vintage, 24" solid wood Hobie, with clay wheels still in good condition. The price listed on the little piece of masking tape was fifty cents. Three years ago, when I was working at East Coast Urethane, I was offered $350 for the board, by a former Hobie representative. I did not sell the board, but love the thought of that fifty cent board being worth more than $300 now.

What G&S set up would you say, could bring that kind of cash? Slalom or Pool? Would Strokers need to in the setup?
I went into a local bike shop that use to sell skates way back and asked them if they had ANYTHING left in the stock room from back then. I guy said he had seen some "junk" back there somewhere. He disappeared for awhile. I heard a bunch of crashing and cussin'. When he came out from the back, in his hand was a brand new G&S Slalom deck. It's a early on with no cutaways, white on top and black on bottom. Really skinny. When I asked what he wanted for it, he told me that he was tired of seeing it around and moving it from one place to the next so I should just take it out of there. I said, of course, no problem, You'll never be bothered by this old ass board again!

OK, was at the local swap meet and found a G&S, haftraks and some krps. It was pretty beat up but I thought what the heck, I will get it for 10 bucks and add it to the collection. I asked the guy how much and he said $500 !!!! What an idiot! ruined my whole day. Did not event want it that much, (the board was worth about 8- 100 bucks Max to a collector) but just having him say that depressed me.
Been collecting for a few months and still have not found that elusive garage sale/thrift store find. Would be curious to see Who has the best find story i.e. not on e-bay something you found and got at a great price.

Kevin C.,While the flex isn't perfectly correct,I've found that SGI/Madrid has the perfect bushings out in their new trucks.The height,the flex(well,stiffer than than the old black rubber bushings)and overall feel of SGI bushings is pretty close to what old-school riders are used to.

I have a 36" ValSurf Mahogany with sand varnish deck, and a oak Bahne I won as prize in a slalom contest many moons ago. I intend to get them built up and ride them when I ever scrounge up all the parts I need. I have a set of ACS 500s for the Bahne, and I hope I can come up with either some old full traks or ACS 650s for the ValSurf. I think old boards are meant to be ridden. I picked up a mint G&S autographed Doug Smith on Ebay before prices got out of hand on Ebay. I slapped some indys and beer cities on it and I'm having a blast riding it.

Talk about coinsidense,Take Powerpaw kevlar cores with regular bearings ,one speed ring ,and you can tighten the 1/4-20 axlenuts all the way to the shoulder on the truck,0 play perfect spin,now i'm gonna start on a board.I don't get reproductions,exact ones anyway.I've made one "old style board,a 35.5x7.5 sort of Chris Strople-ish shape, down to the wedgetail,but i got v-lam constructio and the glass is outside,the wedge is thicker,sanded from underneath,stoples only came up to 32's anyway,i guess it's an interesting,project.For instance i noticed a manufacturing feature in an old 36 taper kick,both v lam sheets are identical layup,all the walnuts in the same places,except it's fliped.I don't think two identical sheets were made,and kept together,i think one long sheet was made,at least 72 cut in two and sandwiched on a walnut center ply(cross grain?)my ash boards look so much different than taperkick,the strength is so much better,so much more chip resistance,a though i've seen sims ads that claim ash construction,i think it's good grade structural poplar with very straight grain.

Let me reply about my reproduction request. Any thing I reproduce would be for my OWN PERSONAL USE. As a collector myself I understand the problems with unscrupulous sellers. I skate and do not necessarily want to destroy the $300 Mint Lonnie Toft I own. I would also ALWAYS put a 'burn' warning in any reproduction I make that would identify it as a reproduction. I too have seen many fakes on e-bay and I do not plan to contribute to it. Just want an old school design - That looks like one - that I can skate around on. I should have clarified my request, and understand your concerns, however they are not warranted with my request.

I agree with you Scabs, but I fear we'll never be able to expect such consciencious behavior. It's like the old saying, "If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns". Without implying anything about Kevin Carroll at all, those who DO intend to make unfair amounts of money by exploiting an inflated collectible-market on old skate gear, are going to do so. Eventually the trend will deflate the market. I already have a board that I bought on EBay, that, although it looks absolutely how it should look for its' implied age, I must always regard it, factually, with a suspicious eye.

I have mixed feelings about reproducing or copying an oldschool board. If you are doing it to have that board from past and plan to use it....I applaud you.
On the other hand, if you are trying to reproduce it only to sell it (like the Z-PIG board on eBay of recent ((the item description wasn`t clear that it was a remake)) http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1137316388 ...I a abhor the idea. Hence why I don`t see the need to get the graphics just right.
I also suggest maybe marking it REPRODUCTION by a deep engraving if you still plan on putting the graphics on it.
Even if you have no intention of reselling it, it may fall into someone elses hands and possibly screw a collector.

...and I've been quite happy with the blue doh-dohs (soft) for my slalom decks. They're soft enough for getting tight-slalom manueverability out of my fulltracks, while remaining resilient and snappy.
