Dropped deck

Go look at cemboards.com, they are a swiss snowboard/downhill skateboard company. Roli Hafners model, the "bullet" has the sort of design you're talking about. That is what I ride. I think the Landyaght(sp? whatever) is slightly different. But the cem bullet drops down from the nose, and then lifts up again near the back truck (kind of like reversed camber) The effect on the front truck being that it is angled forward...the same effect you would get if you put an angled riser pad on you front truck, with the fat part facing backwards...thus you can turn quite well. At the same time the rear of the deck lifts up, flattens out, and then drops slightly (i'm sorry this is a poor description), the basic effect on the back truck being that it is also angled forward, producing stability (same as-angled riser pad on back truck, fat partbackwards). The drop between the trucks lowers your centre of gravity, providing extra control and stability.
That is a long tedious description, but the board gives me stability with the low centre of gravity and the design of the back of the deck, but on winding courses, like in europe, and the hill we race in cape town, a board that is too stable is a bit stiff in the tight bends, so the design of the front of the board gives good turning. It is a fantastic deck to ride, especially on windy courses. I find it naturally promotes the rider to do the "Praying mantis" thing. Which i believe is a better position on a winding course...did any of you guys race in the cape town dhx?? that is is the kind of course i'm talking about. sorry i'm blabbering....

Lower Deck Idea.

Has anyone taken a longer (36"), double kick/symmetrical street deck and mount the trucks right to the end. This would seem to have the effect of significantly lowering the deck. However, the truck angle would change. I'm sure this could be wedged to the desire degree. I just want to know if anyone out there has tried this?

what I meant by dropped deck is like in luge where there bends in the deck to lower it. It's like the new Landyachts DH board. the pic is on pg27 of issue 3 longboarding.

You're right. There were some fast dudes teraing it up, back in the day. The low tight tucks were the fastest things going before people figured out how to GO faster, not LOOK faster. A tight low tuck or a preying mantis style form is a slow and ineffective stance now that aerodynamic helmets have appeared on the race scene. All the attitude and nostalgia in the world doesn't get anyone down a long straightish speed run as fast as those with the right gear. If someone has the talent AND the gear, who's going to be faster? Technical runs with hairpins and braking will significantly reduce the importance of aerodynamics but most Americans are obsessed with maximum speed, not who can navigate a windy road better than others. It's too bad because that style of racing is great fun and exciting for the racers, but too few people ever get a chance to even see it, yet alone race it.

I've seen the record published I believe at 62 sumtin? At races all summer with radar guns abound that was broken in practice, and during qualifying(which is 1 guy no draft). You're going to have to have the end all of all events and bring everybody and your tail winds. Well gotta go skate maybe for kicks I'll go break the record a few times!

I made the foolish mistake of purposely gaining 12lbs for the mammoth race thinking it was to my advantage, but Manu pointed out one key thing that i never thought about. The start. When you add weight either to your board or body you will be slower off the line than if you were lighter. Enough to either cancel out the amount of time you shaved off OR make you slower than before. (This is on a course of less than two miles. But weight also hurts on the corners, and a 2+ mi straight hill would be sooo boring)

Gentlemen: I've really tried to remain cool about this,but I'm sorry.There are some truly FAAAST people out there who are not being heard from, and i have to ask myself WHY? Firstly, granted, Chris Chaput(Legendary Freestylist-early longboard pioneer) is no slouch by any means,BUT..What about..guys... like.. (gulp!)..... ALVA! Again,no KIND of a slouch.And just a touch faster than your average Joe.(Your basic,Type-A personality,Legend-yeah-i-skate-that-TOO-(and in case anyone's forgotten,went well-into the 50's on relatively short decks) then there was Shufeldt(Again,a triumph of technique over technology,the deepest,most compressed tuck I had ever seen,solid as a rock at speed(DO THE YOGA< BOYZ) AND THEN THERE WAS HUTSON....C'mon with the Dipped-in- liquid nitrogen Running on carbonfiber races w/nicad powered Chaparral airskirts /CAN/AM stuff already..As I've said before,"IF YA NEED ALL THAT TA GO FAST,HERE'S MUH CAR KEYS,BWAH!!!"(just kiddin'y'all) Seriously,I'd be happy If Icould just get my hands on one (or two ) of those new Turners that are allegedly "out"there somewhere.I've always found that speed evolves from practice+EASE ON YOUR BOARD.(if you're comfortable rolling,YOU WILL GO FASTER.(Note to everybody:Read my post under RIDING LOCATIONS for a serious clue as to why I'm so comfortable going fast,)PS:I MEAN IT ABOUT THE TURNERS..BOBBY,PLEASE!!!

This topic has come up before, and the most reasonable explanation that I've heard from the last time is that more weight=more potential to store energy. Meaning, all the little bumps and stuff in the road don't slow the heavy guy as much. I don't really know how much of a difference this makes though, since as pointed out before, really light guys often win. My understanding of physics though with a simple "block sliding down hill" model seems to give the result that when there is no friction, weight does not matter at all, since gravity pulls everything at the same rate.

Momentum is not such a bad deal in the straights but extra weight can get you to scrub speed in turns. Skaters and lugers (George Orton) have put weights on without much success. With a 12 lb board limitation and no weights allowed on the rider, it's not likely to work on today's speedboarding equipment. An unlimited push start demands quickness and lighter boards work better. The real difference would be found in a rider's body type. Since muscle weighs 3 times as much as fat, strong lean muscular bodies that aren't bulky can weigh as much or more than a guy with more fat (Mr. Puffy) but cut through the wind better and create less of a wake. When this Corvette comes up on a Volvo with speed he can time a good pass and make it tough for the old Swede to fly back into Detroit. Lee Dansie won the gold beating Lugenstein and dRom (big guys) in a draftless luge race in SF and he is one of, if not THE lightest guys in the sport. A lead bomb will beat a Nerf bomb when dropped from a plane but we have wheels, friction, ground effects and turning to deal with. I suggest that you stay in shape, get a good helmet and make well timed passes.

Someone please explain the physics behind adding weight to add speed.Is it an air resistance thing? ie. Less dense objects have more surface area, hence more air resistance than dense objects. Such as a one pound piece of cork falls more slowly than a one pound piece of lead. Or in the real world, John Hutson, dense as a rock won more races than his comp. So I'm begining to wonder if speed and weight debate is all about density and surface area. Help me out Herb.

The speed record is broken every day . If someone wanted to they could get there name in the books . Hardwick would go one better that is the way he is . 70 plus we have done , with the right hill we could draft up to 78 or better.If there is a record breaking event invite Hardwick to keep it fair. If you are right, if adding weight gives a slower start and faster ending, then it would help with a strategy of staying behind in the beginning to draft. However I would guess that adding weight would end up with a slower overall speed in a solo run because extra weight usually means extra friction. However falling and rolling objects have very different dynamics - I would suspect that the wheel weight, not overall weight, produces a "faster finish" effect. Just guessing - I dropped out of physics.

Keep in mind that the dump road is 0.5 miles long and a 7.5% grade.
Guys like Chris with the great tucks and aero helmets hit the 55 mph mark.
Guys with the great tucks and non-areo helmets hit slightly lower at just over 50 mph.
Guys (like me) with the worlds worst tuck and motocross helmets only hit the 45 mph mark.
If we take this hill as a model, we can say that if the max speed attainable is 55 mph. Then the aero helmet increases speed by 10% over the guys who don't use them.
A good tuck increases speed on this hill by 10% for the limber guys too.
Here is an experiment I would like to see the fast aero guys try (hint to you Chris) Hit the hill as you normally would, full aero gear and tuck. Clock your time and speed over a given distance. Then add some weight to your deck, say 10% of the total skating weight (170 lbs for you, 5 lbs for helmet/leathers, 3 lbs for board) So add 18 lbs to your deck and run the course in the same manner.
My theory is that if you time yourself over sections of the course that you will find that with the added weight you will start slower, but end faster. I believe that as the length of the course increases, your top speed will increase too.
I would try this myself, but as most know, my skill set is not where it needs to be for this type of action!

Thank you,Chris.Hey guys,what are you thinking,i was just asking myself which of the 2 setup possibilities is the fastest one(i mean both,velocity and speed).1.setup: on the front truck i use 70mm krypto 82a and on the back truck also 70mm krypto but 78a.2.setup:on both trucks i use 71mm hyper wheels 78a(they are much more narrow than the kryptos).What do you think about the grip?Thanx for your opinion,Ed

Ed, the maximum length allowed by most racing organizations is 48" but some of that might be considered dead weight. The wheelbase provided by a 39" - 40" board with the trucks mounted almost all the way towards the ends is long enough provided you use Randal Downhill or Randal Comp II trucks with the 35 degree baseplates. These are the ONLY trucks that I would recommend as they are stable and virtually wobble free. They perform well on 40" - 48" boards as well, but that length is a little tougher to throw around in tight turns. I've got some board and setup specs pictured on my site, and a video clip of me using the setup at the SLC dump road which tops out at about 55mph near the bottom. Look 5 posts down for the URL of the site.

I have a video clip of four of us up at the dump road on August 6th, all in leathers, three with aero helmets. RK is drafting me until we come up behind MF who is NOT wearing an aero helmet. I make a quick little dart to the inside and slingshot past MF. RK doesn't react quickly enough and, although also passing MF, loses the draft. With a new head of steam I start to close the gap on MG who had long since dropped MF. I make another little dart to the outside and the rest were history (grammar?). RK hooked up behind MG but my two passes were all I needed to stay out in front. Tactics and Aerodynamics? You betcha. No other riders? Aerodynamics.
(I'm just learning to get video out of my camera and onto a webpage so please, be patient. I canned the audio in the hopes it would reduce the file size. It's an AVI file about 2MB now)
