Sharkisland, I can guess your background from your name. DT & I will 'get it'. Your friends Big Worm is faster because it has a slightly smaller wheel that allows it to accelerate faster, then the addition weight of the Big Worm keeps it rolling faster once its going.
HughR, I am waiting for you(or anyone else) to 'prove it'. When guys like Chaput & Kludy smoke me, I say, 'damn I need to get better'. Not 'damn, i need to get some Comp IIs'. I even got Chaput to admit that he dosent think the floating axle makes much difference.

Sharkisland,
The R-II's are generally considered a carving truck... the steeper steering geometry keeps them in that catagory.
The Comp II's have a more laid back hanger angle... same as the Downhills, as well as a "floating" axel. The axel rides on a pair of bearings (same as in the wheels) and spins freely as the wheels spin.
The Comp II's are quite expensive, so you may want to try the Downhills for your first speedboard... HR

Hugh,
Are the Randall comp II's the same as RII's? I bought two pair (150mm and 180mm)for the boards I'm making now. I have heard a lot of good stuff and can't wait to try them. I'm figuring this all out as I go, but my sense is that most anything should be better than my Sector 9 hardware!??
Thanks again!

Sharkisland,
Sounds like Roger and Kludy hit it pretty well. The size of the mountain does make a huge difference as well as does your aerodynamics.
Interesting thing about the dump road... it doesn't give the apperance of being very steep (though it is steeper than it looks) but it is fairly fast. I have noticed in the almost year that I have been going there that the stand up speeds have increased by about 20% over what had previously been considered max speed.
I think that it is due to several factors (others may disagree with me, but I still hold the opinion):
1- The standard has been raised by the aero helmet guys. They have shown that the gear works.
2- Better tucks. In trying to keep up with the faster equiped guys, the non-aero's have had to improve their styles.
3- Better trucks. Randal Comp II's with the floating axels are a major improvement over standard trucks. Not only safer, but I beleive that they have less "rolling" resistance. Someday I'll figure out a good way to "prove" that one!
4- Experience. The overall skill level of average riders seems to improve everytime that they are on the hill with the pro's. It is so great to see guys who a year ago were average slow guy speedboarders turning into "fast guys" right before my eyes!
My observations and two cents... HR

PS - I have a sector 9 pintail with 76mm 78a's. My buddy has the Big Worm with 70mm oragnge Kryptonic classics. All else being equal, his board will roll away from mine consistently, regardless of who is riding it. That must be the mountain effect that someone mentioned. It's a great feeling because it just keeps rolling faster and faster (for longer than mine does anyway).
What a cool sensation!

Thanks to all. It was insightful!
I've been casually bombing and carving and soul surfing anything that has a slight grade and good surface back in New Jersey. I guess you can figure that my clothing is ski-wear, and not very fast (or protective). I've also been using a kind of crouch instead of a speed tuck. I guess I have some room there for improvement.
Basically, I've been out to have fun, and haven't really concentrated on how fast I could go, but I keep hearing all this talk about dump road, and from the pictures, it is definitely flatter than the stuff I've been running. The feedback is eye-opening.
One last thing, One of the hills I've been bombing is a little steeper and longer than the 10% grade hill. I know the original one is 10% because it has a sign posted at the top. No matter what hill I roll down though It seems like you hit a kind of terminal velocity and go no faster. Sometimes this is comforting. You know what I mean, when you stop accelerating halfway down the hill, and you know the ride shouldn't get much worse (especially if it is on on-sight bomb). Does anyone else notice this? And is it overcome with body position and clothing?
Well, thanks again for the insight. I only got back into boarding last fall, and this is my first longboard. But I did order some wheels and trucks and bearing, and whatnot. They should be arriving today. I also got a load of baltic birch, and I am ready to start cutting a new deck. I guess in the meantime, it will be cool to bolt the new wheels and bearings to my pintail and see if it rolls any different.
Man, it's great to be in a sport that doesn't cost thousands of dollars!

For the speeds you are looking for , dont look for a hill . look for a mountain and a big one at that ! With a mountain you pick up speeds little by little, before you know it you are doing 60 plus and no turning back . On a hill you go fast and the ride is over . You see a steep hill will only go so fast , but a mountain is big speed getting there slow. It takes about a mile before the real speed run starts . If you have the will to go fast just find a Mountain , ( WORKS EVERY TIME ! ) O " YOU WILL NEED A CHASE CAR ALSO. I LOVE THIS SITE ! When I cant ride I can talk about it with you guy and then I feel better, THANKS

Sharkisland,
The first part of the dump road is good for at least 40mph with leathers, BMX helmet, and a mediocre tuck (and no headwind). Others guys with tighter tucks and aerogear blow past me pretty quickly. The backside of the hill is faster and longer, I would guess they are getting speeds in the 55mph range on a good day. Lugers have no problem getting more than 60mph.
What are you wearing, how is your tuck? To go much past mid-thirties you can not have clothes flapping around in the wind and a tuck that is just slightly bent forward. You really have to streamline yourself as much as possible and work for those higher speeds. Bend down, way down to where you can hardly see the road in front of you, if you do not have leathers (or kevlar), get one.

Sharkisland,
A 10% grade is very steep... check my page for a fairly accurate way to calculate road grade %'s.
Dump road speeds top section (aprox 7.5% grade):
Non-aero poor tuck - low 40 mph range aprox Non-aero great tuck - mid-high 40's Aero gear - high 40's to low 50's luge - low 50's (gps)
Bottom section (slightly steeper than top): Aero gear - Mid 50's luge - low 60's (gps)
Hope that helps... HR

Hi,
Can somebody tell me how fast Dump Road is? I have been bombing some 10% grades and can't get much faster than mid 30's with a 20 mph rolling start before the 2-3 tenths of a mile of 10% grade.
I know there are a lot of variables, but I can't imagine the hill that will help generate 60 mph!
Thanks.

Spencer, There are patent laws that make it impossible for someone to take "prior art" or something that is common and unoriginal and patent it. Patents have a short lifetime (often 14 to 21 years) before they expire. Don't worry, even if he could get a patent, it would be uninforcable.
I'm off to South Africa for the DHX, Mike Z will no doubt be riding his Roughcut onto the podium (I knew I shouldn't have sold to those kids ;-) If I give him some of my new wheels, we'll ALL be in trouble!

I know a not so cool guy who claims to be in the process of securing a patent on inlaid truck systems (routering out the truck placement area of a deck.) He is trying to do this to have legal rights to something that has been a part of speedboarding for some time now. Should I be leary of routering out the truck placement area of boards that I am making in my garage for myself and to sell to bros in my area? Can you patent shapes of boards? I don't think so because a shape is almost like a haircut, and you cant patent a haircut! I dont want to patent anything about my boards but am nervous about creating and possibly marketing something that could get me into legal trouble because of a pre-exsisting patent. Please help! Oh and to Chris, sorry about mispelling your name, my bad. thanks for the response.

Hugh, Thnaks for the idea with the template idea, I was thinking about dopping them through a 3/4 Baltic Birch then routering out the sides of the hole so as to countersink the trucks and using a mmounting bracket per se then possibly slpping a laminate on top of the trucks for a clean finish. Any inputs or experience with this idea would be appreciated. *Randy

Sorry bout' makin a mess on the page I was just soooooooo stoked about getting a new pr. I have been trying to get that speed for well over a month Danny, I am 14, been skating for just under a year KLUDY, The first thing I learnt to do when I started to skate was learn how to brake properly and I am very comfy with my breaking at the moment(unfortunatly my shoes aren't!!) When I start to bomb straighter hills and get top speeds then I'll probably change to randal race trucks at the moment I am comfortable with my RII's and want the extra turning for the s-bend in the race hill

Spencer, It was great having the local boyz in Seattle get a shot at the pros. Ask anyone, the way to get better is to ride with others who are better and faster. It was nice of Red Bull to give that opportunity to you. Riding with faster guys can make you hungry or drive you crazy. When you see guys pulling away and you don't know why, you're going to be motivated to do something about it, or frustrated. Coming out of that big right sweeper in 2nd place is where you wanted to be. Although that was not the fastest hill around, that dense, moist, sea-level air definitely favored aerodynamic gear. The faster you go and the denser the air, the bigger the role that aerodynamics plays. Aero gear doesn't help that much on some courses, but a racer wants to have all his clubs in the bag, not just a driver and a putter. If people really want to do away with expensive or high tech gear, there are ways to do it that make sense. One way is to have a Spec Race. Everyone rides the exact same equipment. Boards, wheels, trucks, bearings, helmets, leathers, everything. Some would say that this is fair, especially if all the equipment is something that fits you and your riding style well (or you are the one selling the equipment!). This is however, the most expensive way to hold a race because someone is going to have to coordinate the purchase of 50 - 100 brand new race boards and sets of custom fitting leathers and all of the helmets, shoes and gloves. Let's not kid ourselves. No one wants to be told to ride. If everyone was told that he couldn't use high tech equipment such as aero helmets, ceramic bearings, all kevlar racing suits, speed suits, etc., some people are just going to make super snug fitting leathers with kevlar strips in the seams, smaller helmets that are still alot more aero than others, find some other faster bearings, faster wheels, etc. This too will cost even more money and will be high tech, but will appear low tech. Who is going to play god and say "Those are real leathers but they are too snug, you can't use them" or "this helmet is low tech or inexpensive enough but that one is too nice"? Rather than have everyone help one another to create better, stronger, faster, safer equipment, some are saying "hey, if I can't have it, he shouldn't have it either". Personally I think that if there is something that makes us faster without endangering others, it's all good.

Great job , the speed you will feel the faster you go will not change , so ! Just put you head down and go for it! The board will start to do things to you at around 68 or 69 mph and then it will just go side to side on you.Now you should start putting your foot down to brake around 45 to 50 mph and then you will be ready to win a race bro.I love it ! keep on keepen on and go big ! It is raining here again if you can beleave it. Have not been on a hill in to many days in a row and not that happy .I get HAPPY around 65mph. with a tailwind ! Nothing to do so I will just type awhile on this site . ha ,ha,ha,ahaha ahjaha ahahahahahahh

Randy,
If no one has one, you can make one yourself. Just use a piece of paper and keep triming until if fits properly.
Use a scrap piece of wood, cut your hole and see where/if you need to adjust your templet.
If this doesn't work for you, shoot me an e-mail and I'll see what I can work up for you... HR

my name is spencer stribling and I just discovered NCDSA about a week ago. needless to say, my life will never be the same. As you can imagine I have been doing alot of reading on various forums and thier archives. The first thing I would like to comment on is the speedsuit/helmet issue. I want to go fast. If a better helmet/speedsuit will help me go faster the I'm going to do what I must to afford and find them. I raced against Chris Chapet as an ameteur in the pro two man at the Seattle Downhill. getting to the pro two man was made possible partly to lack of racers that day. It is safe to say that I was a little outgunned as I approached the starting gate. This was my first event and the first even for Seattle (in something like 15 years). I learned many valuable lessons that day and I can't wait for the return of the Seattle Downhill whenever that may be! As I made the final turn wide and entered the last straight in front of Chris, I thought for just an instant that I might advance to the next round. Just for an instant though, he reeled me in and it even felt like he had slingshot off of me, he was gone so fast. Now some of this was due to technique, I mean tucking and drafting. Some of this was also due to equipment and apparel. I had to borrow a friends harley-half helmet that day. I tried a full face bike helmet and hated it. It felt weird and frankly, I wasn't sure what people would be bringing to the event. I also was'nt sure how effective various helmets would be. My bro's and I had always bombed helmet-free before the Seattle Downhill. My point is this, better technique and better equipment/apparel are required to win in any sport. So why should speedskating be any different? I'm going to achieve better skill/technique and aquire better equipment to win. And when I get there I to will be pissed if someone tells me I cant use my apparel. If you don't like it, GET ONE. Shouldnt we take this thing to the next level. When I walked out of the shutdown with Chris in Seattle the first thing I asked was, "how much?" He told me and it was alot less than he earned that day on that hill. It's not that much compared to equipment in other sports. GET ONE. I've got to get, but last I want to say hello to everyone. This site is what I need, people I can relate to. thanks and peace
