For you hard core Brian Martin fans, I have a scan of
a full page ad of his from a 1986 Freestylin' magazine.
I also have a scan of the 1977 Oceanside Skateboard
Contest flyer...an interesting document because the
rules allow you to use a ramp as a prop in your run
and the graphic is a line drawing of a guy in fill gear doing a tail tap! My son Rob won the 7 and under
division that year....any way, if you would like me to email you a jpeg of these scans, just let me know.
Rocco has a house on Catalina and also in Hermosa
and can be seen riding his bike down to the pier on Sundays to get the paper.
How are things shaping up for La Costa?
Will there be an area for kids to skate? I will be bringing my 12 year old grandson.

Hey Nada Ollie,
The newschool boards are totally optimized for doing ollies, so your 9" wide soft-wheeled cruiser will not ollie as well as those boards.
That being said, ollies and ollie kickflips CAN be done on just about any board. Fletcher, the kid on my site, can do ollie kickflips on my 40" Comet Kicktail with 180mm Randal trucks and 66mm wheels! And he's less than 5 feet tall!
The latest issue of International Longboarder (available on the web at www.longboardermag.com)has a pretty good tip on the ollie kickflip by Yancy Meyer.

Okay, this sounds stupid, but I'm an old freestyler from
and now, at age 36 I'm back at the local
public park, but I only have one question: Why can every kid do a ollie kick-flip, and I can't? I'm embarrassed to do a 'normal' kick-flip, ie, hook the board with your foot, even though I used to have double flips down (hey, it's bad enough that I'm old...) I'd do finger-flips, but my back! Hand me a cane... I bought a 9" wide board with 74mm wheels, not teeny-tiny ones, how much of an advantage are the small wheels in doing ollies? Any good links to ollie lessons? What's 'the trick'? No one I ask can articulate what they're doing... ps. are there any non-concave freestyle boards with rockers being sold??? What are freestylers riding these days as far as typical setup?

JRC, I am certainally in position to asnswer that but I would be extrememly surprised if that were.
Find Rodney and no doubt you'll find Rocco. Unless of course somethings up.
Snow and ice are on the way I'm gonna have to dig up some ice blades for my boards.

I usually do the skiing/water skiing comparison thing too, people seem to gewt it then.
When I talk about a contest I went to or saw on TV, much the same way the other people at work talk about the football game or basketball game, They think it's weird. I don't surf, haven't surfed in 13 years, but read Longboard, Surfers Journal, and sometimes Surfer. I'm into the sports and the people ionvolved. It never seems to equate to others passions for mainstream team sports.
Who cares about Michael Jordon spinning a 360 before he dunks. I saw Tony Hawk spin a 900, 15' in the air and land on a skateboard.

furthering Henry's explanation as to why we still skate at 40+ years, I always draw the comparison to skiing and surfing where "older" participants are common. When people start to view skateboarding as they do skiing (or possibly snowbarding) they understand that it is a sport and a behavior that is not based on age.

Chris S and April, I'm just floating around where I don't belong (the freestyle forum) and I read your geezer's comment. I think about it all the time. In fact about 10 years ago I was embarrassed to ride a skateboard.
Yet, here's my take:
I'm going to be 50 in December. I grew up in an era where pop Warner football and baseball were the dominant team sports. For some reason (possibly my super cool dad), I ended up Surfing and Skateboarding at a very young age. I started both at 9 years old (in 1960?). There were other guys into too, especially when I got into 7th grade and met other kids from around town. Instead of playing ball, we rode boards.
Flashing forward, when you meet someone who can't believe you are "still at it" at your age, remind them that you are the first of a generation that didn't wear football pads or a baseball glove while playing your primary sport.
What we have is a whole new generation of adults out there that could pull a 50' wheelie on a BMX or Mountain bike, catch a 8 ft wave and, in your case, pull a kick flip on a skateboard.
It's something to celebrate, I think. It's "your sport" and you can thank God that you aren't sitting at home, chowing on chips and drinking beer while watching some college guy with a hangover plays "your sport".
April, I knew you when you were just a little kid. HH

Despite the anti-ollie sentiments of some, an ollie on anything longer than 36" is a thing of beauty. It all slows down like a beluga wale breaking the surface as opposed to flying fish. So with less speed and quickness than the little boards, it forces you into making some kind of style statement. Not a big flip fan, my favorite ollie is a simple 360 ollie where the rider spins with the deck.
I used to to this on my little Rocco deck, but I find it to have much more flow motion on bigger decks 33-36". Have yet to see anyone do it on a true long board. Now that would have style.

Ollie's should not be banned.
Ban Mime Makeup (what was that guy in the 70's thinking).
Ban Spandex, tights and leg warmers.
Ban any costume except the one that Steve Olson decides to wear.
But don't ban Ollie's. Brad Edwards does a nice Layback Ollie. You can hop up and down on the end of your board or fingerflip the thing till you have no more fingers. You may not win or get any style points, but you should be free to do whatever tricks you want with your 1 skateboard.
Henry, how about making the slope style contest like the Gong Show only with a water ballon launcher at the bottom. You get 15 secs for the judges to determin if you're a kook or not. If they determin you are...water ballons away.

Although technically not freestyle, there is going to be a "SlopeStyle" contest at La Costa during the Slalom racing on November 24th. I fully expect a lot of longboarders like Brad Edwards to jump in and show some style on a true hill.
Should be fun. I'm going to jump in on my Ed Economy 56" Supertanker and do what I can.
