i got a set of red 75a avalons on my slalom/cruiser board. i probably took off 3-5mm from the outer lip. in terms of slide control, i've gotten pretty good at doing stand-up powerslides on that set-up, just carving really hard and letting the back just slide out, its a very controlled slide with the trimmed lip. of course thats just my opinion, i dont really race slalom.

Avalon Trim
On 11/9/2004 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (64.208.nnn.nnn)

Good question...I don't know about any other hardness but 80's and 85's...that's all I ride. What I can tell you is this. When I ride trimmed Av's, they feel a little 'high-sidey' at times. I usually use them for ts, but if there's a turn in the course where I have to throw some body, they seem to want to get up off the traction patch sometimes. Kinda feels like a snowboard getting up on the wrong edge in a turn or a surfboard doing the same.

Anyone else have any observations? My experience is somewhat limited since I only use two hardnesses of wheels...keeps things simple for me...being the knucklehead I am...

Avalon trim
On 11/9/2004 Dave wrote in from United States  (67.168.nnn.nnn)

I am now on 78a avalons in back trimmed
about 1/8". How would untrimmed 80a or
82a compare? Speed, grip and slide control.

I have 85a avalons in front cut about 1/4"

Thanks dave

We had a blast Sunday with 9 riders racing at a time. I don’t think anyone got away with out falling or someone taking them out at least once, and no one got hurt, Mico won Sundays race and is now the new points leader and taking home some swag and taking the lead away from HC. Thanks Sully for driving down from Oakland and thanks to Flavian for taking the train down from SF and thank you Santa Cruz crew for showing up. Next race is the 16 of Nov for more info go to

Just to let the cat take a peek out of the bag, y'all ain't seen nothing YET from the esteemed House Of Ick!

Some of the folks in West Virginia got a look at my inspired madness. I'm so stoked about what's on the way that I'm drinking heavily just to maintain an even strain.

By the way, Maysey, welcome to Planet Ick. You'll find that although the sky ain't quite blue in Rick's world, it sure is pretty up there!

ICK's are for kids!
On 10/29/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (69.85.nnn.nnn)

My retired Mini-C is set up for my 9-year-old son Jackson, and he's laid claim to my ICK-O-Shay, but after bashing the nose, we've patched it up, painted it, and re-set it up. I think that one's gonna have to be a father-son share cause it's my best ts board at the moment. I think I'm going to opt for a ts 18/19/20 setup... template similar to Wahl's.

ICK Sticks...
On 10/29/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (66.81.nnn.nnn)

Hey Mike and Paul... I have 4 active ICKs (2 Carreras, Retro-Flattie and an ICK-O-Shay ts recently repainted Evans-style in a metallic lime green!) as well as a couple retired ones.

I'm probably going to order another in the next few weeks. Now the question... should it be a ts/hybrid 18-19-20 w/b or the ultimate gs/sgs at 22-23-24" w/b?

Just took a good digger right out in front of my place revving about on my ts board (running the dog) with too-loose trucks and no safety gear. Rashed my hands, left knee, left elbow, and am shaking still. I was really throwing hard for some goofy reason. The board really rocks, and I just had to see if I could really toss it way out there... OUCH!!! May not go to work tonight...

Yo Paul...I rode Ick sticks all weekend long...What led me to that brand, simple. Get the board you want...custom made by the man the myth the legend...Rick Howell...I've got three of them now and have a fourth on order. They are the sickest sticks out there and I've ridden quite a few different boards over the last few years.

the Garage...
On 10/18/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (69.19.nnn.nnn)

Yeah... I'm old and brittle. All the more incentive to get way out front and stay there. So I've called next tuesday 10/26 as a slalom session so I can give Ravi his Worlds medal for ts on sunday.

Are we good for a little garage poker-run action after a quick dinner maybe? READY FOR ROUND ONE HOMIES!?

I have to say, my little ts ICK-O-Shay rocks. Too bad I was senile enough to not bring it for the Worlds. Let's set a short 35-40 cone tight with some 5.5's and 5 footers, then another similar length course with some of those continuous staggered offsets like saturday's ti-brid at the Worlds...

On 10/17/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (66.81.nnn.nnn)

Hi John... no go tuesday; we're on for the following 10-26? 5:30pm. Probably followed by some hot and heavy parking garage racin' action! As for next year, it will be a select few races. More big SGS please!

I've gotten all the pdf's *except* overall results. I'd love to know how we all tallied up.

ICK brother Charlie has been having some back problems of late and is hopefully on the mend. Get well Charlie!

Went for my first ride at the Scotts Valley Skatepark yesterday... what a great park! Now to put together a few lines... maybe tuesday!

Miko and Judi already practicing? I guess it is just a few months before this all begins in earnest once again - I can't make this Tuesday to skate, but the following week I can - hey, why wasn't Ransom at MB? did Dan ever post the final race pdf?

Sunday...
On 10/15/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (66.81.nnn.nnn)

Thanks Sam for the hub info and kind words. Sorry I ducked out on the party/dinner sunday night. I had to get up early monday to pick up my son, so I decided to get on the road and get home at a decent hour. I would have loved to have a nice dinner and hang with you all.

So today, I got out the Ick-o-shay and Judi and I ran some 5.5 footers up at her house. I NOW admit that my 20" w/b Carerra was just a tad long for that damned course! The Ick-o-shay on the 18" w/b just flew through it. Damn, damn, damn me for thinking we wouldn't face such a tight course! I can't believe I didn't bring it to Morro. Sorry Mr. Howell and my Ick brothers... I won't do THAT again! I did a little bondo repair on the nose tonight and will file/sand it tomorrow. It's getting a custom Evans-style paint job with the super-fine sanding etc.

Can't wait to get my Flattie back all re-concaved and buffed out so I can go race all those downhillers with it in our new poker-run parking garage series. A buck (or more if everyone's down) per race, winner takes each pot at the bottom of each run.
