Mike. Siale is 185+ (i know because I asked him after he dusted me)and still growing. Gilmour is like 180 I bet ransome is 175 (muscle weighs more than fat). I would put mollica up there as the fittest along w/ Dong. Mollica is like an excerciseaholic. Everytime I talkto him he is just finishing a run a bike weights .The guy is psycho.
My knee still hurts too much to move it much. I am supposed to be resting ice and elevation but its impossible for me to do. Worst below the waist injury I ever had. T

Brady, Actually, I think I am about average compared to the rest of the top 10 guys. The only guys that outweigh me, that I can think of off hand are...Chicken, Cross, Mollica, Hackett, Richie...they definately outweigh me. Paul, Evans, Ransom and Gilmour are, I would guess, within 10 pounds of each other. Wins in the 150 lb range? I think Siale is a pretty light guy probably 150 or so and he killed it in the Open GS. Brady, you're a tall guy. The first thing you'll want to do is compact yourself. Bend your knees and get your weight down. It feels kind of weird at first, but once you get the hang of pumping from a bent knee posture, you'll go faster. Also having your knees bent like that will help you if you pump and your wheels start to break loose. You can use your legs to soak it up. Whereas, if you are totally extended you have nothing to recover with...you blow your wheels out and end up giving blood.

Mike, I meant the lighter guy in the top pack.
How many guys came close to podium wins at last years FCR series weighed around 150 lbs.?
Maybe it`s a matter of frame matter as relates to wattage output? I am 5`11" and now 160 lbs (lost lost 2 lbs overnight). I`ve been trying to build my stamina as much as possible as work will allow. I can`t slalom every day. I can`t ride a bike alot either. I do go longboarding every weekend and always end up with cramped legs.
So I am working out to add more muscle AND stamina. At my height, and age, a few more pounds might make me a better slalomer. Then again, maybe not :-)

Any of you Bay Area skaters who want to come run some cones, come on up to Golden Gate Park on Sunday. I'm going to get there a bit early...around 10am, setting cones. Probably skate until around 3. Come on out for a skate. This means you Holl, Tako, Julius, John Kim, Hut, Judy, Miko, Jonathan, Molly, Ravitch, Sully, Matthew, Eli, and anyone else we can 'round up in these parts.

Never give up pizza, it's to damn good. If you "starve" yourself from your favorite foods, you'll end up binging (sp?)
Moderation - just eat a large not an XL! Be sur there is extra garlic and bacon. Ummmmm bacon!
Funny thing is, my bike racing friend lives in the vegan capital, Santa Cruz. His motto has always been: Pork is torque!
Lance is dominant like Merckx, Le Mond is cool and likes beer, and Boyer is currently in jail for child molestation. No kidding. Sorry to get off the subject.
But your experience with motor racing is right on in it's analogy.

Ok...maximize my power to weight ratio. Cool. I've done that with lots of motorcycles, karts and cars, by cool lightweight parts, and building bigger engines. Can I do that to myself without 1. working out and 2. eating less? Seriously, one of the beautiful things about the rebirth of slalom and racing at a grassroots level, is that years of muscle memory combined with fast new wheels let fat old geezers like myself be competitive for a while. Just like any sport, or pastime, it was inevitable that the spectre of actual work would creep into the picture eventually. Seriously, seriously, I've been trying to run when it's not too snowy out, and I ride my roadbike and inline skate when it's nice (and light) out, and try to run cones with a timer as often as I can. But, as much as I love slalom, I'm not quitting pizza. I need balance in my quality of life. And as far as Lance goes, everyone should read his book "It's not about the bike". If it doesn't inspire you to try a little harder, nothing will. I'm not the sort of person who gets excited about sports in general, but when Lance looks over at (insert name of top euro powerhouse climber)on L'Alpe D'Huez, and just rides away, and the guy has nothing, I'm jumping up and down and yelling like an idiot. It was cool when Jonathon Boyer was the first American in the tour, and not to discount Greg LeMonds wins, but Lance rides like a hero, like an Eddy Merckx. This is a great time to be a cyclist or a skateboarder in america.
Sorry this went so far off topic, but without PxOxOxFx to reign me in, I go a bit crazy.

Yes, power and wattage is the same. But since humans really don't produce much power, we measure it in watts. 800 horses and 400 watts are not the sameor we could dunk a basketball on a 100ft rim.
Wattage training would be based through cross training, a bicycle, until a board is created with strain gauges to measure your output. (For Dan Hughs)
David - Slalom is closer to velodrome riding (which I am a part of), but Marty Nothstein didn't win Gold at the Olympics until he lost 20lbs, more watts per kilo. His whole training leading up to that time was focused on that concept. Mc Ewan is a road sprinter and is small. He can win sprints over bigger "pure power" guys for the same reason.
Mike - the drugs Lance was on during cancer were used for saving his life. That would have no carry over effect on him now. We would have to find out what his current "solution" is to determine what is going on. Also, Lance has one of the highest watts per kilogram average EVER recorded. Congrats on the account.
John - thanks for laughing about the poo thing, it was meant to be funny.....
hc - I'm not leaving out gravity, it's just that a person that can pump hard, Maysey, will overcome the benifits of gravity, me @ 260lbs. Big guys create more power, but is it efficient? Back to the cyclists and watts per kilo. BTW I knew Ed Burke personally and he is one of the people I got my info from. Too bad he died a couple months ago.
Geezer-X I'm very similar as a bike racer, but I made it up to Cat 2 on the track :) You have the raw power, but I wonder what Vlad's wattage per kilo is compared to yours. I bet it's higher. And yes, the hills do get bigger every year.
Again, we are talking about so many little factors that the base topic has been overlooked. On a FCR race (which right now is the proving grounds), if all things were equal, the person with the most watts per kilogram will win every time. Remember, not what if one slips on a banana peel, or if one guy weighs 90lbs and one weighs 300lbs, not aerodynamics.... we are talking fitness. That is what was being talked about when people were trying to gain weight. I'm just trying to say is: don't worry about gaining 10,20,50lbs. Concentrate on being as powerful and lean for your paticular bodyweight.

I just got a very important email on this subject...facts are important to pass along I think.
"...the ONLY amazing thing about the chemo drugs are their ability to make you sicker than a dog as you watch all your hair and nails fall out and make you skin turn a nice super white color. The other part is that this stuff is proven to premanenty damage your lungs, kidneys and other organ functions...Lance's cycling improved only because he lost alot of weight because he did not eat for along while and he was able to ride through the treatments. Ask any exercise physiologist, they will tell you the only way to significantly improve max VO2 (oxygen uptake) is through weight loss. Through hard traiining you can only improve it something like 11%."
Thanks for straightening me out on this one. Now I must remove my foot from my mouth.

I was miserable bicycle road racer, a worse time trialist, a tolerable criterium rider, and pretty ok on the track. It is my firmly held conviction that I don't have a single slow twitch muscle in my corpulent form. Bear in mind that these days, with a pair of Vans old skools, pads, helmet, and a sweaty T shirt on, I weigh about 210, more on a good day. On a cyberslalom course, I can push so hard I get shoe slippage, and pump so hard my wheels get hot, and I'm lucky to make it into the 9s. At our outlaw races in DC, I'm always mid pack or a bit better on regular boards, but near the front on longboards. Why? It takes more work to accellerate my bulk in a cyber slalom course than say, Vlad (current Cyber slalom champ), whose narrow slavic ass weighs a solid 50 lbs less than mine. On a hill, my weight begins to work for me, but the more I need to accelerate, the greater my handicap. Longboard? the longer push in, and more consistant speed uses my bulk to it's best advantage, and I carry a lot of speed through sweepers that you can't really pump. And when I'm on my bicycle, all the hills get bigger every year.

"If all things are equal - watts per kilogram of body mass will be the fastest, ALWAYS! Uphill, downhill, flat, sideways, whatever."
Farid, that statement is wrong, not sure why you would decide to toss out the effect of gravity when downhilling. Remember, gravity is doing a great portion of the work. The effects are important since most slalom races are mostly held on a slope.
The examples that were given uses straight line coasting, adding turns would complicate things even more.
Read Burke's book again, there is a section on this.
There is also a section in there on body size and power generation. To generalize, bigger guys put out more power than lighter guys.
Also, wattage and horsepower is the same thing.

Lower Center of Gravity...

has helped me go fast in fact when I was a kid, I used to swim A LOT (almost became a lifeguard)...BayWatch could have been all me. I also used to race mountain bikes back in the early 90's with training on a road bike. Not to mention all the time in the squat rack in high school trying to bulk up for Football and Soccer. It worked because today I have 23 3/4" quads...and a fairly low center of gravity. When I bend my knees I can drive all my weight into and around a cone and blast out into the next cone. Traction in maximized and reach is also maximized, which means I can poke my feet out and wrap them around a cone with traction and speed.
Should I wear spandex like Kenny? Maybe we all should. Doesn't everyone want to share their package with everyone else?

Lance was on some pretty amazing drugs while being treated for cancer. Some might argue that those very drugs coupled with the illness have made him the most dominant Tour de France competitor. Increased carrying capacity in his blood makes his body work more efficiently that someone who has never taken the cancer treatment drugs that Lance was on.

lets rememember that Slalom races are typically 17-25 seconds long so we're definetly talking a sprint-type event where fast-twitch muscle -fibers and a very strong torso are key, along with really good technique. In these super-short events its not always going to be the Lance Armstrongs or Robbie McEwans, more likely a Marty Nothstein, Gianne Romme or a Herman-ator type (bigger guy like Chicken) that can generate a super high peak wattage in a really short period of time (from a stand-still).Check out track and field ; the 100m, 200m guys are heavier and have more muscle -mass than the long distance guys. This is because a person born with more fast-twitch muscle fibers will also be the same person who can build greater muscle -mass through weight-trianing and other techniques. Right now at the level the slalom sport is at, technique and mental ability still seem more dominate factors. Looking at Ransom, Dunn and Fluitt (all on the lighter side) you can easily see that these guys can generate a high wattage relative to their body mass and all are (obviously) technically very adept skaters who can really "throw-down" on race day.

Guaranteed weight gain

John Gilmour

The quickest way to gain weight is to lower your metabolism.
If you break up your TOTAL calories into more meals you'll probably lose weight.
So how can you lower your metabolism? First be tired all the time. Secondly skip breakfast- and possibly lunch.
Best job to do this? Become a security guard or doorman or sitting elevator man that works the 6:00 am shift to 2pm shift. You'll wake up at 4:30am to go to work completely tired- no place will be open for breakfast. You'll struggle to stay awake- sitting motionless. You won't be able to get breakfast because breakfast hours are your busy hours. You'll skip lunch because it is also a busy time. You'll go home eat a huge meal- sleep wake up after dark. Wake up eat again huge knowing you'll miss breakfast. no exercise- just sitting and sleeping.
You will gain about 10-20 lbs per month with this "intense regimen". You may also lose some lean body mass.
One thing that I wondered about "Massy" slalom racers. Since muscle takes up less space than fat- a person with more fat would have his weight more widely distributed.
Since slalom in a turn at speed also need balance I wonder if the "fat penalty" isn't that high since the fat, being more spread out, acts more like a tightrope walkers balance stick to assist in walking that "thin line". More weight is carried LOW.
Since we are going downhill- weight matters. Power to weight ratio is also important. In GS traction is paramount. For two racers with equal skill + power to weight ratio the one with more mass wins.
If you are going to carry muscle as mass- carry it in your legs- particularly calves.......now if only those cones were shorter.

John Airhead-You think you are funny with posts like this "you could probably beat Poof tho."
First off you dont know me, Second off until you show up and race with the big boys keep your mouth shut, third off you dont know didly about slalom, so why are you commenting on something you know nothing about? and last off, Why would you say something so stupid on a website. Its people like you(NEWBIES) that havent a clue about what is going on in slalom and start meaningless BS about people you dont even know.
My past results against the only 2 races Brady has actually showed up at. La Costa 2001 Poof 14th Brady 74th out of 78
Kona Bank Slalom Poof 4th Brady never made it around the first cone. out of 22
Weight dont mean CRAP, Ability and Equipment is all that matters.
You can juggle the numbers all you want, Charlie Ransom won the GS at the worlds and he weighs all of about 165, Chicken(215) beat PD(165) at the slalom on a near flat hill at the worlds.
Learn to turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then come back and discuss all this stupid nonsense.
