The champ and me
Everyone took the day off work to see Kelly Surf
Entering Bells Beach on a perfect day... weather that is. It was heartbreaking, but Kelly wasted 7 minutes paddling out when he and all surfers were offered jet ski rides. He was trying to mess with Owen the wildcard - making the kid sit out there waiting for him to paddle out. Kelly was the only one who paddled, and the clock ran out. Plus, Owen tore the living hell out of Bells.
More pics to come.

Well, I checked out Bells yesterday and am now sitting in my living room after a 31 hour trek. Only 19 in the air.
Just checked out Surfline.com under the topic "owen takes down slater" There is a pic of me on the rocks with a kid in a red shirt. Its like shot 1 of the topic.
Then there is shot of Joel Parkinson signing a baby's shirt (looks like the baby's head) with my tourist Ohio chesse monster shot. Pretty classic. Made me realize that we were really there. It was surreal. The place is the best, the people, and we had perfect 70-80 degree sunny days the whole time.
Pretty spanked and its time to lay it down. Ryder was a champ on the whole trip.

Having the best time. Weather is beautiful. Clear, sunny, and in the 80's. We have seen and touched wild Kangaroos, saw koalas, huge jelly fish, had helicopter flights, surfed, jet skied, boated, biked, and even skated a 13 foot pool in Frankston (one in Concrete Wave). Fookers put a "hidden" deathbox in the deep end. Its a recessed death box in the tile. I hit it in the blinding morning sun while carving frontside and bit it - fully padded with shoes and orthotics so no suffering. Ryder is in heaven. We are staying in a 3 million dollar crib on the water - our friend is general manager for Levi Austalia. The bay across the street is so clear - like Hawaii. The waves are supposed to be 7 feet tomorrow (Tuesday), which means its round two of the Rip Curl Bells Beach surf comp. Kelly, Mick, Taj, Joel, Bobby and all the heavies will be surfing under the Victorian Sun. Its our last day and I wish we could stay for a few more weeks. Dream trip for the family. Pics later. I lost every shot when I formatted my camera for no reason. Never done it, but I lost every shot. They WILL be retrived with modern tech.

Australia is killer. Met Mick Fanning, Laine Beachly, Bobby Martinez, Sophia and others yesterday morning. I woke at 4 am, had some coffee at the BP and took a bike about 5 miles in the pitch dark to Bells Beach and sat in the surfer's parking lot when everyone was pulling up. They were all so cool.
Watched Dane Reynolds and Jordy on Tuesday, but then headed to the Great Ocean road for some site seeing. Its flat so we will go back to the comp after the weekend hopefully for the finals on Monday and Tuesday. Today 7 hour drive towards Sydney up the Saphire Coast for some jet skiing, fishing, biking and helicopter flights.
We are hanging with friends from Blowhio and they have young girls who Ryder thinks are his sisters. Australia is just like California. Exactly. Buildings, the coast, attitude, etc. I dont know who copied who, but its great.

Hey Kenny-
Both my ankles turn inside...
if you widen your stance when walking... ie walk with your feet wide apart.. you will take the pressure off the outside of your feet.
Then you won't load your foot funny.

Nueroma's

Hey, As Morpheous said to Neo in the Matrix, "Yes,...I know Exactly what you mean". My nueroma's did finally calm down but it was months of up and down, going away and coming back, finally about a year later with a lot of ice and giving a rest it disappeared. Several times a day I would take my shoes off and pull my toes apart to spread my metatarsal. It felt good and I think it helped.
Is it on the same foot as the broken calcaneous/surgery? You probably do have a Morton's Nueroma, and it could be from some new angle change of foot placement/alignment since the injury and surgery, but I have heard about(but don't know much about) a similar pain from some sort of nerve impingement as a nerve runs through the ankle. I really do think you have a Morton's nueroma though. Also, if it's on the opposite foot as the calcaneous ordeal, you may have just caused the nueroma from favoring the "good foot" while the injured foot was healing. Hmmm. Hard to say since it's your foot and not mine. Hope it calms down.
If it doesn't get any better as an overall trend with time for a few months, the surgery might be warrented and you're best option, just make sure you have given it 3-4 or more months first(I'm guessing). Schlater - P

I did get orthodics (spelling?) and I can walk around for about 1/2 hour. I just spent 1 hour walking around some huge buildings with people who knew everything. I almost freaked. My foot hurts so bad. I am getting the surgery after Australia I think.
Did your little bitch neuroma settle down? Does it hurt right this second. My Vans are way to narrow and the orthy wont fit in. Skated the park I crashed in yesterday with Ethan (home for the weekend) in 20 degree temps. The skating was fine. Did not hurt except for the tight shoes.
Six, you have been through the ringer. hope all is well.

Hey, I know what you mean about grasping at anything that looks like it might work, I had to do a LOT of experimenting with shoes and insoles and paid some $$$ to Dr's and expensive orthotics that didn't work as well my own, but then again it's my feet and I knew what they needed and I had a lot more insight into bone structure of the feet and some engineering mentality about streses/forces, etc than most people since I Xray feet everyday, plus I make things and have tools.
The morton's nueroma was a huge setback and it really killed my backpacking, bowhunting, hiking, walking to work, biking to work. It didn't really hurt to skate but just walking in Converse back up a hill slaloming about killed me, it was AWFUL!
Also, giving that pesky swollen nerve a rest and giving it a chance to calm down is key. Icing my foot helped a LOT, and I took 4 200mg Ibuprofin's once to 3 times a day as an anti-inflamitory.
Surgery sometimes IS the only solution, but I still say try everything else first. Good luck with things -P

Did everything you said, except had them make em for me. Got the custy insole which is pushing my step to the inside and has the teardrop metty spreddy.
My foot is hitting the ground on the outside, since that is the way it healed up. I hit my foot pinky-first and its crushing those three little bitch toes. I got some mammoth-wide running shoes and it does feel much better after just a couple hours. Just got em today. This sucks, but I can get a handle on it.
Thanks Pauli. I was ready to get it cut out, which I may still do after the summer. Ryder and I were looking at surgery pics online of Morton removal. It just looks like a piece of cauliflower right between the toes. Lots of horror stories about surgeries gone bad. My guy is an ortho, not pod. Thought about freezing it a 70 below zero in Florida, but heard some bad stories. Could be a crock. People with this start reaching for everything. Kinda rocks your world, but not like the back.
Thanks again. Hopefully, I can get a handle on it. Can still skate and thats the most important. Peace.
