Brighton mini comp

Pasty has told me that a mini slalom comp will be held at the Level Skatepark, Brighton next Sunday. Not a UKSSA series event, its a showcase deal, single lane, jam format. I'm sure we can rustle up a few prizes.
Also: Barrel Jumping!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a comp at the Park, so the idea is that its a celebration of all things skate, casual, fun and free to enter.
There have been meetings in Brighton about constructing a new skatepark, with the cream of Pig City involved. It'll be a long time coming, but the more skaters who come the higher the chances of securing proper funding.
More news to follow.

just got back from CP. Where was everybody, only me, Ian and Micheal there. Frank came along on his crutches, not nice for him but it was nice to see him. Says he'll be skating next year. Timing gear played up a bit, but we put that down to this ariel at the top of the hill!!! A good little workout and lots of people asking about slalom so all was good. Edwin

See you there Ian

Hopefully I've filled all the boxes in right as I'm a bit of a technophobe and not too good with the Email stuff. Brands was a blast, old news I know but I never was the most upto date of dudes. Excellent skating and so good to see old friends again, I can truely say that Brands has relightened slalom to me and I cannot wait until next time. I won't write anymore incase I've got this all wrong Frank

The whole thing also made a very obvious point about skating alone. Ross and I were there with our kids, if it had just been me and my two kids it would have been a nightmare getting all of our stuff safely into the car and it not getting a ticket. I imagine traveling in the ambulance and being stuck in some hospital back room while I was in A&E wouldn't have been a lot of fun for the kids either.

reading "big and aggressive 16 year old" makes it sound like I was attacked or something. What I meant was that this kid is 6'2" and rides hard. He was jumping off of a long 50-50 when his board went flying.

Broken bones and Southsea

It's over a week now since I broke my leg. I'll make it clear what happened as i'm now home and have access to a proper keyboard.
Basically, I was riding the snake run and riding it better than I ever had before. The third bend is frontside (i'm regular foot) and I was really getting into getting the board high, my body low, I was riding that turn with my knees right up into my chest, no risk of grinding or anything but much higher and faster than i'd managed before. At about 11AM, after more runs than I could count, something went wrong, i'm very vague about exactly what happened but I found myself hitting the opposite wall at a very funny angle and my leg collapsing under me. What exactly happened?
Option 1: For a while I thought maybe I had lent back too far on a high turn meaning i'd come straight down the wall and tried to ride straight up the opposite wall. This would be extremely whippy as, if you consider the snake run as a bent halfpipe, it's a halfpipe with a 5' diameter. I assumed i'd basically hit the other wall and somehow smashed my leg as I tried to jump off or something. The thing is, I can't actually remember this happenening and most of my memories of that run are pretty vivid...
Option 2: I was riding harder and harder and my leg just gave out under the stress. It's pretty kinked and I do still weigh 16.5 stone (I was 18.5 six months ago but 16.5 is still bloody fat). Maybe it just put too much force through a bone which maybe i'd weakened a few days earlier.
Roll back to Thursday evening. A very big and aggressive 16 year old jumped off his board on the Guildford mini ramp and it was heading straght for me. I saw it coming and jumped a foot to the right. Unfortunately the board caught the edge of the ramp and had it's trajectory adjusted by just the right amount to let it hit me square on the shin just as I was landing from jumping sideways. I was in agony for a few minutes but continued skating.
Next morning, I could stil feel the pain in the leg but thought little of it. I skated at Hove that evening. Again no problem but I did mention my leg pain to someone. Saturday morning at southsea and i'm pretty sure I could still feel it.
Is it possible that the flying board had caused a minor break and this had weakened my leg enough to make it just collapse under a little G-force?. It did break in three different places. I put this to a doctor last week and he thought it was pretty unlikely though one of the locals at the local skatepark reckons the same thing happened to his sister while skiing last year (hit by snowboarder one day, leg snapped cruising down a hill the next).
Anyway, I should be walking around again in six weeks despite the pins and plates. I'll get back on my bike first, then back on my Slalom board but I think i'll keep off transitions until I lose another two stone.

"Know your limits", "Don't go skating by yourself", "don't fall off"... All these things echo through my head. But too late. I went to Watlington by myself yesterday morning to try the Steve Alba deck I got from Michael at Brands. All was going well until I thought I'd have a go on the half pipe. Here I have to admit that ever since getting back on a skateboard earlier this year, it has been my secret desire to get vertical and kickturn with three wheels out, just like all those photos I used to pour over in the mid 70s. Well after 6 or so kick turns back and forward I made it to the top, frontside kickturn, three wheels out, axle on the metal coping, YES! Then, as the front wheels hit down I get wheel bite. Board stops dead. I carry on. And a 40 year old sack of potatoes hits the deck from about six feet up. All of my weight smacks on my hip. Badly winded. Stare up at the sky, smile through the pain. Get up after a couple of mins and hop/limp back to the car.
Manage to drive home. Sitting down is fine but can't put any weight on my right leg. Get a taxi to casualty in Watford. X-ray shows I've fractured my pelvis! Whoops.
Maybe stick to slalom in the future.
Graham.
