John Dillon: Great Post! Thanks for the heads up on the Ed Economy Gravity Model. I am glad you told me about the Bank Rider being stiff. I am a pretty big rider (not fat, just big) and I need a stiff deck.
I didn't realize until just getting back into the sport how many of my peer group had either gotten back into the sport or have been skating all along. I am so freakin stoked about skating again that it is totally driving my family crazy.
Fatboy: Dude, I saw those Rectors on Ebay! Talk about some serious 80's mojo going on. I am just not sure I can handle the pink.

A fun lgbrd sesh was had in DC last week...tons of fuzz but they didn't bother me, except the black-suited commando who jumped out of the bush w/a machine gun when I checked out the Capitol from the south side. I saluted and carried on.When he saw that I wasn't Osama(depite my headrag) he carried on. Yo NC Lgbrdr: I ride Randall 180s on my Gravity Ed Economy Bank Rider(the stiffer of the EEs) I also utilize No Skoolz(softies) and Flashbacks(softies) and some 80a Gravity wheels. The Ed Economy deck is a great one- Thanks ED and Gravity! I like Bozi's gloves w/the slideable palm but Fatboy's suggestion is cool too if u don't want the hard palm. I've recently been riding my shortboard too, a Bulldog Longboard(38")with a Randall 150 in the front and an Indy in the back, w/Shogo's 92a yel wheels and a Bozi Mad BomberII, w/Randall 150s and Avalons/Flashbacks/Avilas. Allergies are killing me today....achew! Hope to c you again soon, Fatboy! btw....I'm 42 going on 43.....old-school is fun!!!!

Well, I did find a source before any responses. Has anyone had any experience with Bozi Longboards gloves? Here is a link:

I was also checking out the boards. I talked with Jeff there and they have a extra stiff model that sounds great for larger riders. Anyone out there riding one of those boards?

I am trying to find some suitable gloves for longboarding.....not real interested in slide gloves with the hard palms. Really would kill for a pair of Rectors from 1978! Any suggestions?

Now will somebody please tell me how to work the Tony Hawk Pro Skater game and Playstation I got for my birthday? I haven't played a video game since Atari! Soooooo many damn buttons on the controller! I think it'd be easier to learn Japan Airs on a RAMP than on this game!!!

Ed! Cool that you have been skating with your daughter. I tried to drag out the 11 year old yesterday but she is in the phase "Dad, your a dork! What if someone sees me that I know with you on a skateboard?" Ha ha. My 15 year old daughter thinks it cool though and everytime one of her boy pals come by the house she is quick to get my photo album out that has all of my pictures from the late 70's and early 80's skating and competing. You know, back when I had hair.
By the way, one of her 15 year old friends walked in the house the other day carrying an Ed Economy Model Gravity 57", the one with the red graphics. He had it set up real loose and it freaked him out when I ran downstairs, grabbed my Vans and long OP shorts (Dude, I only skated in OP shorts back in the day and it was cool a few weeks ago when I found some new OP cargo shorts in a Rugged Warehouse Outlet ..bought three pair), and took his board out in the street. Damn, what a sweet ride. I was suprised how well that thing turned even as big as it is. He definitely freaked when I went tearing up in the neighbor's drive and did this big layed out Bert turn ala Jay Adams. Got to have one of those to add to the quiver. I have a Think Longboard 38", a Dregs 46", a Powell 32" bowl rider, a Per Wylinder Freestyle deck (1984 model), a 1972 Bayne (all original).
How do you have your Ed Economy Model set up? What trucks and wheels? I am so oldschool that Kryptonics is all I want to ride, but I actually have a set of Sims on my Powell (true vintage 1983 found in the back of a bike shop in a box of old skate stuff). Also, where do you recommend I buy one of those boards?

Is there anyone longboarding in the area? Where and who? I need some hills except for the Pine hills area! Did the Lake wales stuff and those hills are scary and prone to get trucks wobbling! 45mph easy on 9th street and 50ish on spook hill with hardly no run out spots for bailing. The Burns BIG one is the longest but dead ends at bottom with stop sighn and traffic.Got there around 10am and stayed till about noon with no lunch traffic to worry about. The hill I reccomend for the most fun is the Tower blvd run. This starts fast and has a turn to the right on a slight up hill only to turn left on a steep 8 degree drop that last for whats seems to be an eternity! This also dead ends on Lakeshore blvd." WEAR YOUR GEAR AND A LID!!!. I have a LDS " CURLUM " board with Indy 10"s and blue Krypto 85's plus some cheap ceramic bearings won on e-bay for 8 bucks. I was way too fast and scared to bomb with any style because I was thinking ROADRASH and worst of all did not want to hear my wife bitch that "I'm 37 and way too old"! The Long board maps.com site was helpfull in helping me find these locations but the hills were much faster than described on the site, even when carving and sliding to slow down the speed came back fast! Who says Florida is flat with no hills? I need to find mellower hills and longboard buddies for spottin and first aid if needed. Maybe some beers after the jam!

What 42 is not old! Fatboy your still a kid (not much longer) On May 12th I turned 49. I took out 3 of my 5 ft Gravity longboards. My daughter who is 14 & her friend and I skated down the beach board walk for 3 hours. They were burned out fast. I came home had a couple beers and went to the local skatepark damm !!! I'm still hurting I'm older than dirt but I will skate until I crawl.

I am a product of the 70's skating revolution with my influences all coming from the likes of Peralta, Alva, Dogtown, Tom Sims, Bruce and Brad Logan, etc. via the pages of Skateboarder Magazine. Growing up right outside of Charlotte, NC the skating scene was hot back then with parks in Charlotte (Concrete Connection & Polar Palace) and Myrtle Beach (Ocean Drive) and countless streets, parks, ditches, and killer hills. We skated every style, every type of skating, and every type of terrain we could find. Over the years I have continue to skate off and on but two years ago I purchased a longboard (38 inch) and it totally revitalized my interest in this awesome sport. Now at age 41 I am riding 3 times a week (usually very late at night after I have completed all of my "adult responsiblities), and have purchased a 46 inch Dregs and a 32 inch Powell. Longboarding, cruising and carving hills, ditches, banks, sidewalks, and even mountain roads (yes, we have run Highway 421 out of Boone going toward North Wilkesboro, a 4 lane wide, no median, 4.5 mile carver's dream at sunrise!) is now my entire skating focus. It so awesome to put together long runs through the city streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and ridable spaces. Many of my neighbors and "friends" think I am insane, too old, silly, etc. but the truth is I am just so freakin stoked everytime I ride it is an awesome feeling.
I would like to hear from other 40 year old and plus riders who are still out there doing their thing! What challenges have you run up against? What has kept you bombing hills, skating banks, riding ramps, freestyling, or whatever?
Let's hear it from the "old guys". I plan on doing it until I can't stand on a board any longer...then hell, I will take up street luge!

i can't believe there's really such a big gap between sector and gravity boards... at least it's just laminated wood. I ride a sector stick for 3 years now, nearly every day, and skate it hard, but there seems to be no pressure cracks or other quality losses. That doesn't mean i'm firm with their marketing strategy, and their stock hardware is CRAP- also gravity has a killer team, must be for some reason... This is what i can tell, but i have no real comparison since it's very hard to get gravity products over here in europe if you don't want to spend BIG money for it... isabelle, couldn't you change that? ;) skate fast (i know you do),

In the 70s Skateboarder Mag issues there was a 3-truck skateboard advertised. I never have seen one in person nor seen this one in particular in use. I have seen and skated Lonnie Toft's 4-truck wide-a** skateboard.

Another good indicator of preferred stance (besides the sprint start one mentioned below) is the "push".
1. Get the noob to stand directly in front of you, facing you, about 1 to 1.5 feet between you, with your shoulders parallel to the noob's, and the noob's feet a comfortable distance apart (directly under shoulders is good).
2. Quickly push them backwards (not too hard, just enough that they are forced to take a step backwards.)
3. Usually, noob will step backwards leaving them in their "comfortable" stance. (Right foot back = Regular, Left foot back = Goofy foot).

not realizing that it has probably been done before, i once set up a three truck system on a santa cruse 36" longboard sometime around 1985. as i remember this particular deck was concave and had a trifold spoon nose.
what was neat about this deck is that when weight was applied between the front and middle truck, the flex in the deck would lift the rear truck and wheels so they were not in contention. like cruising in a lower gear. then when weight was shifted to the rear truck, all three would come into use and the fun just begun. it had a noticeably controllable slide with all four wheels down in the back. interesting and such a fun ride to say the least. it's probably still floating around or i may have given it as a tip to this bartender friend but that memory is kinda fuzzy.
