When I was younger, I used to have a blast bombing hills at night! The "jocks" would try to chase me down, but could never figure out that a board can turn more quickly than a car!! God only knows what would've happened if they ever caught me!
I posted this on the Pools and Parks forum, but put the Athens, OH park on your must-skate list this summer!!! It's way longboard-friendly for carves and cruising (and I'd stoke on having another longboarder there!!!)

AdamH: Funny you should mention about the cars speeding through suburban neighborhoods. Last night about 10 pm I was out in front of my house with my 11 year old daughter messing around with my 58" Wicked Skateboard when some young punk in a supped up Mustang decided to cut through the neighborhood at about 70 mph. The speed limit is 25. He saw me in the road and checked up and as he rolled past me I got a pretty good look at the kid but unfortunately could not read his license plate. I know it was rather late but it is summer and our neighborhood is full of kids...and me! I have called the police this morning but of course their response is "we will try to patrol the area better but are limited in what we can do", which really means, "your city council members are too worried about getting re-elected to even think about raising taxes to pay for more and better trained police officers"! I am as conservative as the next guy when it comes to the government taking my money but if I knew for sure that it would go to improved police services and schools I would gladly write me check( well, er, I mean, be glad for my wife to write the check...she doesn't let me near the checkbook anymore after my last two skateboard purchases arrived on back to back days).
As far as night riding, the town I live in, Statesville, NC is only about 20,000 people but has one of the only vibrant and active downtown centers in this state for a town its size. Downtown is actually built on a big hill that was too difficult to farm back in the late 1700's so was donated by the land owner for the town. I sure am glad his mules didn't have a climbing gear. There is a great deal of sloped wide 4 lane roads coming into the city from both north and south with parking lot ramps, wide sidewalks, and side streets that also have grade coming all together. It is extremely well lit and visibility is good for oncoming traffic in every direction. Like most small towns in NC, during the week by 11 pm or so you can stand out in the middle of the road without worrying too much about anything but the occasional Bubba coming home from his job at the chicken viscerating plant drinking a beer driving his piece-o-crap (fill in the blank with any pre-1980 domestic vehicle). Their are a few bars/restaurants downtown and you have to be careful to watch for the patrons coming out of the parking areas but for the most part it pretty safe. The local police now recognize us older skaters and never give us a hard time. The teenage skaters just stand at the top of the hill or at the bottom and stair in disbelief.

What types of areas do you guys ride at night. I'm pretty sure if I ride around this neighborhood at night, I'll surely get hit. Considering the way the people drive around here during they day, it must be even worse at night. There's an issue for ya. People speeding through suburban neighborhoods. It's an epidemic around here.

Viatus: Dude, I am doing the first "test runs" tonight and am going to skate it a bunch this weekend as time premits. I want to take it to a bunch of different spots and get a great feel for it then I am going to put it all on here.
AdamH: Spreading at around is the way to go. The Bozi was a custom complete that Jeff Yarrington put together for me piece by piece. The Wicked Skateboard Conn Johnson Winged Wonder Interuban thing was basically stock off their shelf. Heck they are on sell for like $169 at www.wickedskateboards.com

Thanks for the advice NCL - On the last one, I ordered everything separately and I spread it out over a few weeks. I got the deck from SK8supply.com - got the trucks from gear guys via ebay and got everything else through Mile High. I shopped around to get the lowest prices but after all the shipping costs probably paid average. My wife is used to me receiving packages because I collect antique fishing lures and have for about 6 years. I ran out of room for my hundreds of lures and they are now in storage. I'm a collector by nature so here come the skateboards. The best thing about collecting new skateboards is you can actually use them. I've looked into collecting old skateboard stuff but so far it looks like vintage decals are about as far as I can go with that. Back to spreading out your purchases, it's a little easier on the wallet ...or so it seems. I understand the reasons for buying a complete but sometimes, I just can't shell out $200 or more just for the fun of it...at least all at once.
Another thing I've considered is buying a skateboard for my wife. You know one of those "made especially for girls" decks. Sort of get her into the act. She grew up at the beach so she understands the whole scene.
The next two decks I"m getting are going to be a pool board like a 32" and a true longboard at around 44" or more. Talk about trouble. I'm just asking for it. haha.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT let the UPS Man/Woman deliver new complete boards on back to back days! This is NOT a Good Thing! As previously posted, I got my new Bozi Mad BomberII yesterday here at the office and today, my Wicked Skateboards OTS Interurban Winged Wonder (58" w/Randall 180's and 75mm Wicked Wheels). Dudes, I am in so much trouble. The good news is I will be able to skate alot at night for a while.....I mean a bunch of free night time for skating just fell into my lap so to speak!

G, I haven't even gotten the board put together yet so, who knows. It might be awesome at Kona. Still waiting on the wheels. The deck is actually 9.25 at it's widest but I think it will be fine. The wheel wells are carved out so that should help diminish the wheel bite. I plan on eventually having a board for every occasion anyway so it really doesn't matter. It's all still trial and error for me. I grew up on big fat Kryptonics so I should feel right at home on them. We'll see...or should I say...wheel see. Anyway, I'll post a report as soon as I take it out for a spin.

Hey sorry had no idea that the deck was 9'wide. My 43" is in a classic pintail shape and is only 7' wide near the wheelwells , 9'in the middle. with my 180's the wheels stick out 1 and a half on each side. good for high speeds on downhill carving and sliding . I did not know the deck was for vert. All my skates are set up with the" wider is better " theory. When I finally breakdown and buy a digital camera I'll post pictures, or I can just drive the quiver up on my trip to KONA.Make sure you leave your wife at home! If she sees my collection and what and how much mula I've spent she will freak and you will jones for more decks and wheels and trucks and bearings and gear and you know what I mean! Can you say "MID LIFE CRISIS" Thats me! GO do some ripping with your new board and see you in J-ville soon!

Dudes and Dudettes! Did any of your hear me yelling and screaming just now when UPS walked in with my new Bozi Board Mad Bomber II Extra Stiff? Holy Damnation! If this board rides anything like it looks it is going to be FULL ON STOKE TO THE FREAKIN MAX!
The set up that Jeff Yarrington at Bozi Boards suggested was Quick-Turn 45°Metal Seismic front truck, and Stable-Turn 30° Rear, both 180's, Turner Avila Wheels 76a rears, & 85a front. I just rode it down the sidewalk in my dress clothes and I can tell already it is going to a be a smokin' fast set-up!
I will give a complete review after I have been able to ride this thing a couple of weeks so stay tuned. Just for readership purposes, the heavy duty set up is because I am 6' 215 lbs of skatin' muscle....(ha ha).

Well, I guess I screwed up. Kinda bummed now. I guess I'll set it up the way I originally planned. If it sucks I'll remove the trucks and wheels and set up a third board. lol. My wife will love that idea. I just got back into skating after a long break(years and years). So my knowledge is limited. I actually got the advice for the wheels off this board. hmmmm?

I agree. 180's and those wheels are way too wide for that deck (for my taste anyway).
The wheel/truck combo is 1 1/2" wider than the deck.
Even at 39" this is a sporty, fun deck. That's why I like it.
It needs sporty, fun, trucks and wheels.
150's would be more like it. With some 70mm or smaller wheels.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm curious- RII's and 76mm wheels on a DT? With that truck/wheel combo, you should go with a big carving/cruising board like a bozi or Ed E. On the DT, you will get MAJOR wheelbite. Some Trackers or Indies and 65mm centerset wheels would be a much better choice for a park board like the DT. Just my 2 cents.

CRB, I was the one that mentioned it. I have one on the way. I'm going crazy waiting on it. I have a set of Randall R2 180's waiting on it and also have some 76mm 80a Blue Krytponics - Bones Reds and 1/8" soft risers on the way as well. Should be a sweet ride. I've got my eye on another Dogtown board too. It's got a big ol' skull with a top hat. I don't even know if I'll ride that one. I might just start buying decks for the art. I'm hooked. Your post made me that much more anxious.

Someone mentioned the DT skate for life deck and I just gotta say that I have one and it's becoming my favorite deck.
It's got a really nice shape. It's not too wide (just over 9") and I really like the way the nose kick is not as steep as the tail.
I have it set up with Tracker B52's and blue Kryptos. Wedged like a slalom board.
Fun, fun, fun.

i found a nice old cypress gardens slalom ski in my bosses shop today...don't know how i ever missed it. it's beautiful, just as tall as the one i ride...maybe taller, less of a nose (angle and size), and almost seems a little wider. there is a sweet grooved channel that starts out at the top and gets deeper near the bottom. the tail is wider, and flat at the end. the got beautiful dark stringers, in what looks like maple. it's in beautiful condition too. this one might be getting glassed. i'd be keeping it for myself, but i promised my buddy i'd keep a look out for one. good luck on the search...shouldn't be too hard in N Carolina...hit up some pawn shops and antique stores.

hey NC, i just read your post, and i have some suggestions for you. try ebay for some skis...i found my first pair at an old job site (actually where i got the idea...for a second i thought it was an original one...boy was i wrong) a great place to look though is ebay, you can find a shape you like, type of wood or quality, and great deals. i'd try looking for a cypress gardens 'cougar' they look pretty sweet, or some maherajah(sp?) skis..those are real nice, and some tend to have wider front ends (where you need it most...mount the front truck up high too so you can hang on it) it is going to be real flexy under your weight, i weigh around 150 and i get alot of flex (which i love for cruising and carving)...but you could easily run a wood stringer down the center to give you some strength...if you don't have any luck on the skiskate thing, check out jamlongboarding.com, they've got some big guns, and i mean big...the silverback is sick. they're based over here in Va too.
