Juan Fungi , I think its damn cool that you skate around school, thats how I am planing to get around mine as well. Down with cars, up with boards. Also its cool that you get to ride around with servers, thats allways something fun to do. Last summer, I went with some friends to Europe, and we took out long boards with us there. You would not belive how many looks and questions we go from there. I was really suprised with that. I would have thought that everyone skated over there, but I was all around Germany and Austria and not one place sold long boards. We finaly found a place in Amsterdamn that sold them, (sector 9's) and in Veinna they had a Wold industries bomber. But what I was going to say was that they are hella nice for getting around towns and train stations. And you can fit all your suitcases and things on them, so its not as heavy to get around. So if you are ever out backpacking in some other countrie that might have roads, I suggest packing your board.

I totally agree Newbie Boarder that longboarders get treated better than shortboarders. The cops over where I live almost never harrass me. A matter of fact a couple of times they pulled me over just to ask questions about it because they thought longboarding was cool. Maybe it's because I'm alittle older (24) and they know I won't be out destroying property or harrassing anyone. I've talked to some of the younger shortboarders and they told me they've been harrassed alot. I told them the worst thing you can do is talk back to the cops and the places that you do skate don't trash them (leave garbage, break things, write Graffiti). Another thing that also annoys me is when people ask me if I can grind, ollie, or like the other week someone yelled out the car for me to 900. I explain to people that I surf style longboard and my board is strictly for that style and the most aggressive move I can do is a slide, along with nosewheelies, hang 5/10's, spinners, walking the board, and just trying to stay loose and stylish as I can when I carve and cruise. Needless to say they look confused and just don't get it, fuck 'em, they don't skate anyway. Anyway, if you can ollie a longboard, more power to you, if you just like to cruise then that's fine too. It's all about having fun and not to impress other people. Always have fun. Later.

Re: riding at work I work on computers from one side of campus to the other and started riding my board between jobs about 2 years ago. Most people look w/ some amusement when they see me out and about but when their system is down and I show up it doesn't matter how I got there. I thought the comment on fratboys was interesting. Kids (13-17) think it's cool but occasionally a student will give me the "so what tricks can you do" line. I tell them if they're still on a board at 40, I'll ask them the same thing. One other thing: Hauling a $8000.00 server across campus back to the office on my old cosmic S9 generally gets noticed. I've found that you can stand it on end and ride 'scooter style' - the flex smooths the ride more than the standard issue collapsable two-wheel cart. Now to get that requisition for grip tape approved ... Juan

I've felt a fair amount of "understanding," surprisingly, by many your short boarders. A mob of them really got into the freebord after a brief demo (they were first skeptical with the center casters locked up in longboard style). Police have only hastled me once in the past two weeks. Recently, I finally met up with another longboarder who was all into it.
Non-skaters, on the other hand, are far less understanding. Smile and nod at the local drunk frat boys screaming out of car windows, demanding to see you "ollie 'dat fucker." Not really asking for it anyway, Ryan

yeah, speaking of riding to work... I was riding to work a couple of months ago. I work at City Hall... Anyway, I had my longboard with me, and I was riding the elevator with a couple of City Council Members... One was asking me all sorts of questions and seemed really interested. I told him, they were fun unless you got a ticket. He had no idea that you could even get a ticket for skateboarding. Hopefully, this little incident raised his awareness some, cause he really liked the board...

I hear ya Namon.
Skating past a pack of shorboarders, I usually overhear comments such as "that's not skating" and other similar comments. That's like someone drving on the freeway saying that NASCAR isn't driving.
Pretty lame comparison (sp?) but I think everyone can relate. I skate for one reason, -me- and the feeling -I- get while -I'm- doing it. If I enjoy it, I don't care what others think.
I used to shortboard, and I got frustrated with it, and wasn't having fun at all.
I'll stop before this turns into a rant. Oh and I just got promoted at my job, which means a suit & tie. Whenever the weather permits, I skate to work in a suit, tie, and DC skate shoes.

YOu guys have a point with that. I too dont get in to too much trouble with my board. THe only time that I have ever been in trouble is because I was cought in parking garages. And even then they dont take my board or anything, they just ask me to leave. I guess what I was asking for was a little respect from short boarders. Not that I really need it, because personly I dont like them at all, but for the whole sport all together. This is off the subject, but you know whats great? when im skating around san fransisco, and I see guys in suits skating with breifcases. I think its so tight that there are people out there that do that. After school, I want to do that. Im goint to get a job just so I can wear a suit and skate to work. So, if your one of those guys, then all props to you.

My experience has been that generally people don't give me any trouble about skating. This may be because I'm older now, but even as a young kid I had no real problems. The few times I've had any problems, it was usually because some idiot that was skating in the area was grinding up some property, knocking out plate glass window, smoking dope, or just acting like an fool.
It alway pisses me off when I get to a favorite spot, like a parking garage, and find some crappy ramp or rail that some kid has left there. That kind of stuff can really turn a nice spot into a bust. Another one is littering. People just leaving their garbage on the ground causes a lot of bad feelings.

I get all the same stuff from almost everyone who talks to me. Alot of people ask if "that is some kind of surfboard-skateboard" I think that we generally have a better image than shortboarders (i do that too once in awhile). Mall security and shopkeepers don't like to have grease and wax poured all over their curbs, people in neighborhoods don't mind as much because longboards tend to use softer wheels so you're not "rattling" the hell out of people's nerves.

Namon, you mentioned wanting more respect...well something very interesting happend to me about a week ago.
In downtown Denver, CO there is an outdoor mall there and you can get ticketed for riding a skateboard on it. Well most of the time I don't ride on there, but this one day I decided to.
Anyway, I wasn't really paying attention to my surroundings, and I rolled up next to a group of 3 police officers. They were already talking to 3 shortboarders, one of them was holding a ticket. I thought for sure one of the cops was going to ticket me as well. One of them just looked at me, looked at my longboard, and went back to his buisness!
I think longboarders get a certain respect from the public. Maybe its more about curiosity. Most people that approach me about skating in front of their shop, parking garage, sidewalk etc, just seem to have questions about the odd shape and lenth of my board.
Anyone have similar experiences?

Newbie boarder, I must say that you have hit the nail on the head with your post. I too cant stand it when people step on my boards and try to ollie, and then they try to shuz it the thing. And from there it moves into "hey, what kind of tricks can you do on that??" And when they hear that I hang ten, coffen and pull high speed turns, they laugh because "long thing" cant jump over stairs.
They dont realize that doing most things on a longboard is just as hard as it is on a short board. Even though it does not seem hard to walk up to the nose and place your toes over and ride. But try doing that at 20 some odd miles an hour, while turning on a huge hill. Thats just as hard and takes just as much balance and skill as doing some new school trick.
I guess im just ranting, but lets kill off all those short boarders. : ) just playing, but really, I would like a little more respect.

This should probably be posted ina different group, but oh well.
I don't really have a problem with people doing "new school" tricks on a longboard, I can only speak for myself by saying that's not why I got a longboard. I gave away my shortboard because I wanted to get away from jumping off every park bench, grinding every hand rail, etc...I ride to carve and just relax.
It drives me crazy whenever people step on my Sec 9 Cosmic 2 and the 1st thing they do is try to ollie it, (because of the kicktail I assume. I only use the kicktail when I need to whip the nose around.
Like I said in my previous post, I can respect anyone who can do "new school" tricks on a longboard, but I think it really contradicts even riding a longboard. Tricks on a longboard should be about walking the board, toes to the nose, nose wheelies, smooth slides, carving up the asphalt like it's the ocean.
I may be a little young (23) to be considered a skate geezer, but I dig the "geezer" riding style.
Just my opinion..

Newbie boarder, You have a point about some of the new school tricks. There are to many scenes with stupid tricks in them. As of yet, I have only seen one good longboard video. And that was in a store in Amsterdam, and I never got the name of it. But the rest are all dumb, and have tricks. Dont even bother with sector9's new one. It is full of short board stuff. Its a waste of time and money, I as expecting alot more from them on thier second shot, but they missed.

I got the video in the mail yesterday and it rocks. I wish there was more sliding in the video though, I need to learn how to do it by example. I'm not too big on the "new school" stuff in it, but I can respect those guys for doing some rockin' stuff. Also, they used the fast film technique a little too much in my opinion, and there was standup downhill for about 5 seconds in the whole vid.
Great carving scenes down the Northen Cali. roads, and riding on the highway like the skater in the vid is something I've always wanted to do...but never will.
Overall, an above average video. I expected more, but I suppose for being Sector 9's first video it was a great effort.

There is some dumb stupid air trick stuff, but the stuff that is there is pretty good, and not to much of it. I think its the best video out there so far, well that I have seen anyway.

The old video bones brigade video show has a short section on downhill sliding. I found it on oldschoolskates.com The footage is fun, but not as hardcore as I would like. When getting a video, you want to see something really spectacular, something you can't do right away. The down hill sliding sequence was fun, but I found myself wishing for longer more impressive slides. Footage of real long slides is needed. Prehaps there is a way of preventing the dreaded flat spots when pulling long slides...
