You should have at least read the reveiws or what PG-13 means. Had the story been truer to life it would have got an "R" just for language and surf violence. "Locals only no hodads!" LODT is sanitized IMHO. Next time take her to a Disney flick. The movie is what it is. Where the hell is Jeff Ho?

Skateboard Kings and Skateboard Fever

The two films dubbed together onto one VHS tape, and being sold by someone on eBay are the BBC documentary referred to below by Barb, and "Skateboard Fever", both from the 1970's.
The Skateboard Kings video is grainy from multiple dubs, etc...but a very good watch and you will recognize footage that's also in Dogtown & Z-Boys. The Skateboard Fever vid includes extended footage of Russ Howell and Stacey Peralta skating together and video footage of Chris Chaput and Dennis Martinez winning the World Championships in Maryland, 1977, I think. It also features ELLEN O'NEILL...a personal, childhood favorite and object of much, much teen lust, and footage from La Costa when all those roads were brand-freakin' new with no houses around them.

Barb, thanks for mentioning the British documentary. I happened to reread Tony Alva's second SkateBoarder interview a couple of days ago, in which he mentioned being filmed by the BBC (and then rushing back home to be interviewed by People magazine, I think?). I always wondered what the title of that documentary was, and whether it might be available somewhere.
And with all due respect to the Z-boys' style innovations and energy, I also thought that many of the "other" freestylers had plenty going for them as well. I was just a kid back in the mid-1970s, and back in those pre-video, pre-DVD days, if I saw any kind of skateboarding on TV, I was STOKED. And what little got shown on TV was freestyle, and the only people I remember were the "other" freestylers, like Russ Howell, Chris Chaput and Richy Carrasco. Having never seen ANY really talented skaters at that time (in person), I was beyond blown away by what these people were doing. Even now, when I see clips of people like Tom Sims riding his old waterski board in freestyle, pressing up into a handstand while turning in a tight circular line, I'm still blown away.
To keep this somewhat on-topic, I still have to admit that the Z-boys' story is probably better suited to a movie of this type, and casting the other skaters as behind the times or somehow less "clued in" makes sense. Without some conflict, you can easily end up with a feel-good story with little dramatic tension or reason to care. Funny thing is, practically everyone has enough pain, grief, sadness and drama in their real lives to make for an interesting story; in the right hands, "The Life of Bruce Logan" or "Russ Howell Speaks" or "Turn the (Ty) Page" might make "Lords of Dogtown" look tame. Or how about "Urethane, Baby: The Frank Nasworthy Story"? :-)

Stacy had the presence of being a genuine skateboarder. Sure, we all said stupid s#@! back then. But in my book, he was a class act. Carried himself well and was/is an overall "friendly" guy. I've been finding the general agro skateboard club these days to very friendly. The young kids(8-16) have no idea of the crap we dealt with. That's refreshing.

Like Barb said...it is not the producers job, nor the directors, nor the theatre owners to make sure your kids get 'the right message'. It is YOUR job, just like it is YOUR job to keep them safe when they participate in skateboarding.
Stop abdicating YOUR RESPONSIBILITY for your children...it's tiresome, whiny, yuppy behavior. They keep ratcheting down free speech so YOUR kids won't be harmed. Take one for the team, and say NO when they ask to go, or else pre-view it to make sure it's appropriate.
I have two daughters, 13 and 16, and it is MY JOB to listen to what they listen to, and to watch what they watch, REGARDLESS of what the RIAA, the MPAA, the FAA or the CIA say.
Be a parent.

I'm kind of amazed people are surprised at the crude behavior, etc. portrayed in LOD. It's PG-13 for one thing, and practically every review gives you an idea of what to expect. I actually expected a lot worse considering their reputation and the fact that director Catherine Hardwicke is the one who brought us the movie "Thirteen."
I was only 12 yrs old when I watched those guys (and girl--please don't forget the great Peggy Oki!) make their supposed grand entrance at Del Mar, and I definitely remember my innocent ears burning from some of the comments they were making to the girls there. (Which is why, 30 yrs later, I still fondly remember Stacy Peralta as the "gentleman" in the group.) In any case, it's a Hollywood movie. What does everyone expect? If you want squeaky clean, jump onto Google and track down that classic, "Skater Dater."
By the way, just to toss this out, I am disappointed that the freestylers of the day continue to be made out as total nerds. I do believe those outrageous Z boys popped some nose wheelies and handstands themselves from time to time (Stacy himself toured through Australia with Russ Howell). Granted, the whole "skateboard as ballet" was just waiting to get spanked, but still... the freestyle people were doing some amazing things, too.
Lastly, I just watched the coolest old documentary on the Dogtown thing: "The World About Us--Skateboard Kings." Filmed by a British crew in 1978, it's an hour-long look at the inner workings of Dogtown, post-Zephyr break up. It shows footage of several skateparks in So Cal, shows Alva and his Alva-ettes doing what they do (all savvy enough by the to be wearing Alva t-shirts), features a long interview with Stacy Peralta and Russ Howell, and ends with a trip out to the Arizona pipes. Definitely worth tracking down. (Just don't ask me where to find it; my friend got it on Ebay several years ago.)

GIJoe, although I haven't seen it and likely won't until it goe sto DVD the sentiments you reflects are shared by many.
several people have come in to the sk8park and said the same. One dad in particular left the theatre with two young boys in hand. It was not what he needed them to be reinforced as Okay conduct.
It's funny how Stacy would change the result of the Slalom when in an 80's interview he was asked about Slalom? His answer, if you want to Slalom "Go Skiing" What a Joke.

My 12 year old daughter / skater and I went to see it and were not thrilled at how violent / drunk / crude some of the scenes were, especially with respect to the ladies. I know that those were the times that Stacy was trying to depict, and that is how they were, but for the girls I think that the Z-Boyz documentary
is a better bet.

ok...so the movie was better than i exspected, i did wanna go skate afterwards and hey i did!
one thing.....when the end of the movie came, and they were giving info on what jay, stacy and tony are doing today they said that stacy went on to found powell peralta and is now a award winning film maker. but they neglected to mention that he made the movie(downtown and z-boys) that inspired this movie...that seems like a pretty important point to leave out...wonder why?

Saw the movie. It was great. Very cool seeing all the skaters in the movie. Nice to see some fun carving skate lines being made on those old school boards. Sometimes I wonder how we ever did it. Great job everyone. Jack you did great. Nice to see Ray Flores as an announcer as well.
Hopefully it will get more young skaters to try bank riding, slalom and downhill instead of just rails.

I was chatting with this 18 year old ripper at the park last night and he mentioned how much he dug the skating in the movie. He is easilly one of the best skaters in town and he was inspired to learn some of the old school moves he saw in the movie like handplants.
It may not make much money but it is exposing younger skaters to a different style of riding and changing things up a little.
I'm glad they made it.

i saw the movie with my dad when it opened. i'm 19 and i ride a 42 board. My dad grew up in the 70's and remember reading skateboarder magazine seeing jay adams do a hand plant, then going out onto his home-made halfpipe and trying it out that day.
we both like the flick, but agreed that there were some discrepancies in the accuracy. where was Ho? what about jay's dad? meh.
still a good movie, i was impressed with the actors' abilities to skate.

I liked the movie a lot. Saw myself in there for a millionth of a second, but that's not why. I thought that Emile Hirsch did a great job as Jay, and the movie was a lot of fun. I would see it again.
