Last night Dholt, Rookie, Evan (who was the Call Out for this session), Mark Nix, and myself went out for some good old DHB Night Patrol! It totally rocked.
We hit all the runs downtown and then worked our way over to the Oakhurst neighborhood run down to the high school (1/2 mile). Then we hit Center Street from the top running back towards town (a 8/10ths of mile fast run back past the high school.) It was so fun we walked back to the top again and went for it. This time some jerk in a black Pathfinder decided to "escort" us down the hill. At one point he was less than 10 feet or so from Evan and 15 feet from Darren and I going about 35 mph+. The jerk followed us all the way down the hill getting closer and closer but had plenty of room to go around us. I just kept saying in my helmet "no one fall, no one fall, no one fall"....the jerk (yes, I have quit cussing so fill in your own expletive for the word jerk) would have killed anyone that came off their board. When we finally got to the uphill runout and had room to get single file he layed on the horn as he road past us.....what a JERK!
We then headed back into town hitting the drop in hill behind the police station and library but no one was up for hitting the Book Drop so we decided to call it quits. Then, someone mentioned Sullivan Road. This road is almost a mile long from the top to the bottom and has been freshly resurfaced with the best asphault I have ever ridden (it reminded me of the stuff on Mollica's soap box derby hill but has had enough traffic, rain, and heat, to harden it up a bit). The grade is not particularly steep but is still fairly fast. The challenge of riding this road, and the reason we have all been reluctant to hit it, is that it is the "main drag" down to "restaurant row", I-40, and the Walmart Super Center mess of humanity!!!! It also passes right by Waffle House which has fed many a late night drunk driver! Evan and I talked DHolt into following us from the top (a spot called 5 Points for a reason..lots or roads intersecting) to the bottom so we drove over there. Park our cars in the BP at the top, and pushed in hard. Evan road his Landyachtz Evo with 83mm Flys and DH Randals and I was on my newly acquired and freshly painted Bozi GS 36 set up with Randal 150's and Chaput's new limited edition Pink Gumballs (the board I road almost all night on every hill that I normally ride a Bozi MadBomber II with Seismics or my Big Red X with Randal DH and 83mm Flys) (note:The Bozi GS 36 set up like this will be my Urban Assault board of choice for along time to come). The ride down the hill was awesome! Near the bottom the pitch changes and the speed picks up significanty. As we past the Waffle House with Dholt driving behind us in his truck, party goers standing in the parking lot were waving and yelling us. 1 am, we are bombing past them, and they are diggin it....it was crazy. Evan and I both rolled all the way to the Interstate overpass. Dholt hauled us back to the top and it was now his turn to join Evan on the Sullivan Road descent. This time Evan pushed in harder and Dholt, on his MadBomber II with Seismics and Purple Skunk Exclusive Purple Avilas, dropped in behind. It was fun driving behind them watching them pumping their big boards up to speed and screaming down the hill past all the high end houses that line the road and then in the commerce section that has gas stations, the Waffle House, used car lots, and a lingerie shop! The look on Dholt's face was priceless...just that look of sheer thrill and excitement that riding skateboards on a big hill provides! I hauled them back up the hill, waving at the party goers still standing in the Waffle House parking lot, and it was my turn to hit it with Dholt. Evan drove this time and Dholt and I pushed in even harder and tucked the whole hill. At first I was in front but Dholt came up along side of me right before we reached the fast section. Those wheels he was riding though soft, were alot faster than I thought they would be. I had to improve my tuck and draft him a bit as we passed the Waffle House for the last time and pulled up along side of him right as we hit the stop light at the bridge. Stoked to the max I was, stoked to the freakin max! By now it was well after 1 am and everyone had to work today so we called it a night but not after standing at the top at our cars and just reveling in what got us back into skating in the first place....bombing hills at night together.
The DHB's are about having fun on a skateboard. Though we ride slalom and put on races, we are about riding skateboards...all kinds! That is the beauty of the organization. Night Patrol is what started it all and it was just an awesome epic session for the local crew.

Hey Trish, I'd say yes that we can probably find some sort of accomodations. Same story, if you think you might come out, post it on the CSA forum and that you're looking for someone to stay and ride with. Our one main female racer stopped due to having twins last summer so we'd probably hook you up somewhere else since she and her husband are pretty busy. Let us know-Adios, Paul

Hey all of you DHB'ers, If any of you come out to one of our dinky semi-organized races in the Northwest, post that you're doing so on the CSA forum, one of us will likely give you a place to stay and drive you around and save you some $. Check out our Salem Oregon Soap Box Derby Hill from last Sunday's Season Opener BBQ. It's a lot mellower than the Salem-Winston SBD hill but has a great surface. I think it's very similar to the one in Ohio Kenny runs races on. Hopefully I'll make it out to the Dixie Cup #2 and not be sick this time. It was good meeting all of you in person. Adios-Paul

Cbark,
I have to say that you either are one hell of a teacher or you had some amazing students. Actually both are true. The DHB's are set to be a new force this year. I can't wait for next weekend to see them all in one place.
They are blazing.
