Gary & Marion Just wanted to say thanks so much for providing us organizer with race insurance. The ASSA bond takes a lot of the financial pressure off us and I'm sure that I speak for us all when I say thanks.

Yes Insurance is now secured for the 2007 season. Races on the schedule so far are (were): Sizzler, Luna, Colorado Cup, Buckeye, Nationals, Worlds, La Costa, Dixie, Hood, and Red Clay (if needed). Contact me if you have a legit race that needs insurance.

Hey Gary and Marion. I was wondering if we are doing the bond thing for 2007 or is it going to be SPA individual race insurance. I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask if it is the later. First question, how does the race promoter prove that he has insurance to the city? and second how do the promoter know that who is and is not covered on race day? Oh and three can person sign up on race day and get covered on the bond and if so is there a form to fill out if this is the case?

Is there any information developed yet as to the race mentorship program? With only one race under my belt and plans to do more, I can use all the insight I can get right now.
Also, I'd like to tentatively add the 2nd Annual Kentucky Fried Cone Fest to the 2007 ASSA Calendar. It will be in September, though I don't yet know the exact date. As soon as I know the date, I'll finalize the plans, etc.

This is just a quick list of events that we have on the docket for next season. We'll be negotiating a group insurance policy this winter, so if you have a FOR SURE event that is not on this list, please contact Marion or myself.
February - Texas Sizzla
March -
April -
May - Luna Slalom Jam, Colorado Cup
June - Capitola Classic, Red Clay Cup, Buckeye 3
July - Hood River
August - Farm, Longmont (worlds or nationals)
Sept - Encinitas Open
Oct - Park City Showdown
Nov - Dixie Cup (worlds or nationals)
As you can see March and April are begging for events. Southern events would be great. Phoenix, Las Vegas, Georgia come to mind. Let us know.

Also, Thank you Gary for all your doing with the ASSA program and your post explaining what we are all about. Couldn't have said better myself.
As Gary has indicated, ASSA is focused on providing the tools, knowledge, and resources, to race promoters/directors, that will assist them to put on the best event possible, be it an outlaw, a race with regional draw, or a big event such as a Prime, a Main, or even a MAJOR like the US Nationals or the World Championships.
ASSA is not in the business or regulating races, dictating points systems, or taking control out of the hands of the local promoter. It's whole entire focus is improving upon the event, making the task more managable, and ultimately, and this is KEY, more enjoyable to the RACERS! When putting this program together we kept this key paramount in our thoughts.
RACE DIRECTOR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
In 2007 ASSA will be rolling out its Race Director Mentorship Program that will be focused on training and assisting new race directors/promoters/planners in putting together their events. The goal is to create a transfer of knowledge to these individuals that will help take the guess work out of the process and encourage people to put on more races.
Look for more information to follow as the details of this program is developed.
ASSA Insurance Program for 2007
It's never too early to plan for next year's race season. If you are scheduling an event for 2007 that requires liability insurance please email both me and Gary so that we can put you on our list of potential insured events for next year. Armed with this information, we will be in a better position to negotiate rates and potential sponsorship arrangements.

What is the ASSA?
In February of 2006 Marion Karr and I were discussing insurance, and issues related to putting on races. Marion suggested that we put together an organization to pool our resources. A month later the ASSA was born as a Group Purchasing Organization. The people putting on the big U.S. races were invited to participate and all agreed. This included (in order of their races) Ricky Byrd - Luna Slalom Jam, Rick Stanziale - Red Clay Cup, Kenny Mollica - Buckeye Open, Steven King - West Coast Championships (aka Hood), Bill Tway - The Farm, Gary Fluitt - Seismic Nationals (previously Breckenridge), Lynn and Tiger - La Costa, Joe Lehm - Sandia Challenge, Jack Smith - US Open, and Marion Karr - Dixie Cup. Other race organizers were not overlooked, they were just too early for us to help, or not quite on the map yet.
WIth the main players in place, we went after insurance. We secured a substantial group discount based on pooling the races above. This bought us 10 events and 24 days of racing.
At that point we went to the Slalom Skateboard Manufacturers and asked if they would partner with us to help buy this insurance. We got an immediate and positive response from almost everyone. They are:

What's next for the ASSA?
We're only half way into our first season, but we're already thinking about next season and how we can help slalom skateboarding grow. Marion is at work on his race organizer mentor program. He's already been seen "menotring" many would-be race organizers, and reminding a few of the old dogs how to do it. This program will include race logistics, leading up to your event, how to run your event on race day (no rules, just suggestions), and some tips and tricks for things like "jigging a course" and running a 24-person bracket. Additionally we are looking into Association Timing Systems that can be borrowed or rented and several other things that will help with race organization. This will help slalom grow from the grass roots level. We want to help build a volume of races, and racers, by growing the number of little independent races all around the country.
Look for more on this program as it shapes up.
We will of course continue to work on helping race organizers with insurance, permits, and logistics. We have already made available a sample Race Promotion Sponsor document which has been used for a couple of race promoters seeking local sponsors outside of the skateboard industry. In the future this will include things like "how to write a traffic plan" and "how to address your local sponsor". There is lots that we can do here to help you get your race permit secure and sponsored locally.
I want to thank all the race promoters noted above who've spent the insane amount of time and effort it takes to put on a race. All of those people putting on races have put up their own $$$ to make these events happen and more importantly they've spent hundreds of hours organizing, running, and cleaning up after races.
I also want to thank the thirteen Skateboard equipment makers above who've stepped up with their dollars to make sure we have races to go to. Not enough is said about these companies. I realize this is a bit self serving as I have one of the sponsoring companies, but the others took a risk on this "ASSA thing" with nothing more than an email of introduction and a vague concept of supporting slalom racing, and without hesitation they said "where do I sign"? I encourage you to support these companies as they have supported your races.
How to participate
The ASSA is about growing slalom skateboarding. If you have a race to put on, and you need some help contact us. If you are someone who wants to see slalom skateboarding grow, and you would like to be associated with the sport please contact us about sponsorship opportunities. They are both very large, and very small. We can use all the help we can get financially supporting the sport.
