Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports
Association (IGSA) are pleased to announce that the second stop of the
California Championship Series is here! We apologize for the late notice,
the permit for our original plan was denied but this will be a fun race with our new plan.
This will be a dual slalom for inline skaters and skateboarders in Mammoth Lakes,
California. All races will count towards the IGSA world rankings.
Sponsors include P3, Dublin's, and Fever.
The race will benefit the Local Scholarship Fund of Cerro Coso Community College
and the Mammoth Lakes Foundation, who are graciously offering facilities for our
use (see below for more about the ski museum).
The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage local students and residents
to enroll and attend classes at Cerro Coso Community College, Mammoth Campus,
and graduate with an Associate degree or complete a significant number of
transferable general education units. The Scholarship pays for all course
enrollment fees and all required book/supply materials for enrolled courses.

The course will be a dual slalom with about 20 turns. It's quite a bit shorter
than the giant slalom at West LA College, but the pavement is excellent and
it's a lot wider, so parallel courses will work well. The location is near the college and
ski museum in Mammoth, on Saturday September 11. Even with a short course, the
dual format should be really fun, an intense sprint right next to your opponent. The
course layout will require hard braking at the finish line to milk the most out of the run.
The agenda:
Saturday September 11
AM: practice
noon: round robin head to head qualifiers
2:00: final head to head elimination races
Saturday night: awards dinner party at Dublin's Restaurant/Fever Nightclub in the Village
Sunday: freeride downhill day on the many miles of quiet roads in the area
Camping is plentiful, and is generally first come, first served. Condo lodging is
off-season (cheap and readily available, condo splits can be had for about
$30/person/night). Condos may be found through Mammoth Reservations
1-800-mammoth (many racers will be in Timberline Condos in the middle of town).
If you're looking for someone to split a condo with, please contact me. The
weather in September tends to be cool, crisp, and clear at 8000 foot elevation,
bring jackets for the evening and morning.
Entry fees will be (additional $5 for those who don't join for the season):
$75 pro skateboard (cash prizes)
$35 advanced skateboard/inline (equipment prizes, awards)
$25 intermediate skateboard/inline (short course, awards)
$15 juniors (advanced or intermediate)
some free entries for workers, probably advanced notice required

Mammoth Ski Museum (Restrooms):
All participants in the Westwood Ski Club skating event will be allowed access to
the Museum on Saturday, September 11th. The normal entrance fee will be
waived for any member of the Westwood Ski Club and participants in the day's
festivities. Be sure to take a look at this unique museum! To gain access to
the museum for free all attendees must identify that they are with the
Westwood Ski Club. No skates will be allowed in the museum.
Dual Slalom: two racers at a time start head to head, racing on parallel
fast slalom courses with about 15 turns (marked with cones) at about 20 mph.
The cones will be spaced 5 to 12 meters apart.
Racers will be disqualified for missing a cone (if both racers miss a cone, the
lower DQ wins), false starts, interference (crossing into the opponent's course),
rough riding/contact, or for failing to stop within the finish area.
Each round will have 2 runs, with each racer getting a run on the left and right
courses (time permitting). The racer getting the most points wins the round
(ties go to the winner of the second run except in finals where a runoff is used):
2.5 points: first racer to cross the finish line without a DQ
-1 point: each displaced cone (DQ for 4 or more)
-4 points: DQ
Racers will wear numbered bibs to help identify who displaced cones.
IGSA world ranking points will be awarded at the regional level, with race ranking
according to entry class (all pros before all advanced, all advanced before all intermediates).
California Championship points will also be awarded.
IGSA giant slalom equipment rules will be used (pads and helmets required, leathers are OK, too).
Pro purse will depend on the number of pro entries (limited so that payout won't exceed entries) as follows:
20+: $500, $300, $200, $100
15-19: $500, $300, $100
10-14: $300, $200, $100
6-9: $200, $100
3-5: $200
Sunday Freeride: enjoy the tons of great roads in the area
(leathers are recommended):
Scenic Loop: over a mile of high speed bombing, the site of the Mammoth
Downhill Skate Festival in years past.
Highway 203: take a gondola ride at the ski area main lodge, then ride down
3 miles back to town, past the Scenic Loop on the way.
Old Mammoth Road: ridiculously technical 1 mile brake-fest at the top with steep,
narrow run ups to hairpin turns, followed by a mile of smooth bombing back to town.
Lower Rock Creek Road (from Tom's Place to Bishop, through Paradise): running
the full length of Sherwin Grade west of 395, over 5 miles of downhill with a couple
thousand vertical feet of drop, new pavement, mostly high speed, with some turns.
Gorge Road (Bishop): parallel to highway 395 on the east side, entrance at the
bottom of Sherwin Grade, super high speed bombing on a deserted desert road,
over 5 miles long and mostly straight.
Pine Creek Road (Bishop/Rovana): from the base of Sherwin Grade, go to
Rovana and continue to where the pavement gets good. Darren Lott clocked
over 70mph on his buttboard on this one!
Onion Valley Road (Independence): last stop on the way back to LA, 1.5 hours
south of Mammoth. It's the big one, where Tom Mason broke the world record for
street luge at 84 mph! Thousands of feet of vertical drop, over 10 miles long, with
nasty hairpin turns at the top, major high speed bombing at the bottom
(remember the cattle grate!), very steep all the way, major braking required.
Still Life Cafe (Independence): Don't forget to eat and drink after all that skating!
Protective gear: IGSA equipment rules will be used.
For slalom and giant slalom this means helmets, pads
(elbow and knee), and hand protection (gloves and/or wrist
guards) are required, and hip pads are recommended. Please,
no short shorts or tank tops. For street luge, buttboard,
gravity bikes, and downhill skateboard and inline, helmets,
leathers, and leather gloves are required. We're building an
equipment pool to loan to people who forget things, please
donate your old gear, it may save someone a long trip home!

Directions:
Mammoth Lakes is located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains in central
California, 5 hours from LA and San Francisco, and 2.5 hours from Reno, on
highway 395. The race will take place on College Parkway and Wagon Wheel Road.
Exit 395, and go west (towards town) on 203. Then go left on Meridian.
Go left on College Parkway (before the stop sign) and follow it past the college and
ski museum to the course. From the intersection of Old Mammoth Road and
Meridian in town (the Vons), head east on Meridian through the stop sign and
turn in to the college and ski museum.

Mammoth Dual Slalom, California Championship Series

The weather for the Mammoth Dual Slalom was classic for the Sierra Nevada
mountains: crisp, clear, and dry. Two pairs of dual courses were set on
the smooth asphalt, one for beginners and one for advanced skaters.
With short notice for the event due to permit problems, and waning interest
in the sport of slalom, there was a tiny field for the event. But the racers
that did make it were as fast as ever, including Davide Tacchini from
Italy (one of the top downhill skaters in Europe) and Scott Peer (California
Champion numerous times). After practice in the morning, the racing
started in the afternoon, with round robin match-ups being used to determine
seeding for the elimination finals. In the end Davide Tacchini's powerful start
and clean skating carried him to a solid victory. The skateboard race
was cancelled due to inadequate entries. For the awards/dinner party
we took over the whole Fever nightclub and viewed race videos while
eating, drinking, and planning the next day's freeride.
