##########News Flash 28 March 2005: Here's the Deal, The Bush Park Salem Soap Box Derby Hill will be used for a Soap Box Derby CAR race the weekend before AND the weekend after OUR event. There may be some Soap Box Derby'ers wanting to practice on OUR Sunday April 10th. I'm going with the current planned date, showing up early, putting down cones early and getting out the leafblower to make it look like we really have an event. The other options would be to move it later to May, especially due to the fact that the jet stream has returned "our" rain which California tried to steal. If you have an opinion/thought on this matter, call me, Paul at (541)754-7826 or email me at bird041167@yahoo.com ASAP.###########
**********NEWS FLASH FROM PRAVDA; After we're done dinking around, eating and blabbing, an informal jam format against-the-clock(THREE CHEERS FOR CHEWNING BRINGING HIS TIMER!!!) single lane race will be held for those who want to participate. The "other" course (the one without the timer) will still be open to everyone. HAND MADE TROPHIES(courtesy of Some Guy from Oregon) will be awarded for 1st-4th places.END OF NEWS FLASH****************
WELCOME COMRADES- It's time again for the slalom BBQ race season opening event! Same thing as before: people slaloming, BBQ-ing, eating, blabbing, trying each other's setups, etc. I'll bring my small BBQ, burgers and sausages, salad, water, plates and utensils, a handwashing station complete with soap and paper towels. This hill has some of the best buttery smooth asphalt in the Northwest.
BEGINNERS- This is the BESTEST of the BEST of events for you to see what works and does'nt work for you and if you don't have a slalom setup, we'll have plenty for you. BRING A HELMET (though we might have those too).
COURSES- There will be 2 courses, probably a small G/S and a hybrid or tight course. Usually someone gets bored and changes one or both at some point.
WHAT TO BRING- HELMETS, pads, boards, cones, brooms, LEAF BLOWERS(the hill gets covered with acorns and twigs-there will be shade if we need it), extra food for the BBQ, an extra BBQ, yourself, kids, significant other, friends, etc, and HELMETS, did I mention, HELMETS?
WHAT NOT TO BRING-Problematic behaviors(for instance, not wearing a HELMET), problematic dogs or people. Good dogs are OK.
WHERE-Take I-5 to south Salem, Oregon (not south of Salem however). Take the Hwy 22 West exit, exit #253. Go West (toward Japan) 2.7 miles from I-5, soon you'll notice the name changed to Mission Street, stay on it. Look for Bush Park to the left/south (toward Antartica). Look for a big track stadium, the Soap Box Derby will be next to it at roughly 600 Mission Street. You're there. Put on YOUR HELMET. Go skate.
ENTRY FEE:As an event of the Soviet Socialist Slalom Republic, this is a communal state sponsored event and there will be no bourgeois capitalist entry fee exploitation of the working proletariate class by the rich capital owning class. Did I mention bring brooms and Leaf Blowers AND A HELMET?
THIS IS AN OUTLAW EVENT, -SORT OF. The park field staff dig us and help us out, as far as the "suits" above them, lets not invite their attention. Let's not give anyone a reason to complain and lets pick up garbage like in the past. By attending this event, you and your heirs understand the dangers of riding a skateboard and agree not to hold anyone responsible at all for any injuries you may incure.
CONTACT- Paulski Zhowardstanovic, GrassRoots Slalom Soviet Premier Secretariat at(541)754-7826 or bird041167@yahoo.com . Ok, it's really Paul Howard. If you are coming from South of Salem and need a place to stay the night before, call me.
WHEN- Prospectively Sunday 10:00 am the 10th of April 2005,this is subject to change, mostly due to weather.
SEE YOU THERE!!!! -Paul |
