2005 West Coast Slalom Championships

We are proud to announce that Slalom Skateboard Racing returns to Hood River once again!! This time as the 2005 West Coast Slalom Skateboard Championships.

Saturday, July 9th – Super Giant Slalom Saturday’s event will be fast and technical. The fastest times of the day will be from those racers who posses a delicate balance of guts, brute force, endurance and the agility of a ballet dancer. We plan on replicating last years course which had 95 cones and was a half-mile long! Winning times will be those who can complete the course in just under a minute and a half. Last years Winner - Kenny Mollica - posted a winning time of 76.223 seconds!

This event will be a single-lane Super Giant Slalom. Each racer will get two qualifying runs and the top 32 racers (based on your fastest qualifying time) will move on to the final round. Racers will get three runs and be ranked by their top two combined times. Racers Meeting is at 8:45AM. Practice starts at 9:00AM. Qualifying begins at 10:00AM sharp.

Sunday, July 10 - Dual Tight Slalom, Downtown Hood River Tight Slalom Skateboard racing returns to Hood River. Sunday's race will be a dual Tight Slalom course with 50 to 60 cones spaced from 5-1/2 to 8 feet. The course will have several different sections consisting of straight cones, offsets and step-overs. Dexterity required!

The race will take place in the middle of downtown Hood River. What could be more fun than racing in the streets of Hood River with a throng of spectators and a stiff tail-wind. We are excited to be back!

Sunday’s event is a single elimination with the top 24 qualifiers going head to head. The fastest 8 racers will be seeded in the “A” bracket, the next 8 in the “B” bracket and the final 8 in the “C” bracket. This system worked so well last year that we decided to use it again! Racers Meeting is at 8:45AM. Practice starts at 9:00AM. Qualifying begins at 10:00AM sharp.

Prize money and medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers on both days. That's 6 checks a day for those of you keeping score. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in the “B” and “C” brackets as well!

NOTE: These slalom skateboard racing events are open to everyone. However, familiarity with slalom skateboard racing is highly recommended. Full safety gear and proper slalom skateboard equipment is required.

Getting There:
By Air PDX (Portland International) is a is served by United, Alaska, American, Northwest, America West, Delta and several other airlines. It is sometimes less expensive to fly through Seattle to PDX - so check out the non-direct flights to Portland.

Car Rental Ganging up on a rental car from PDX for the weekend is probably the best way to go. PDX is a small airport with onsite car rental agencies. Fluitt finished his last race in 2002 and was on a plane within 2 hours.

By Car From Portland it's a 90 minute drive to Hood River on I-84. From Seattle, WA to Hood River - 4 hours. San Francisco, CA to Hood River - 13 hours.

Lodging There are many local hotels in Hood River that can accommodate you for $80.00 or less. Also check www.hrvacations.com for house rentals in the downtown area.
