Hey, It will soon be time again for the annual Slalom BBQ and the wearing of helmets in Salem Oregon. This hill is fairly fast(really fast if you pump with a good start) and has a 5-Star plus pavement rating by the National Slalom Heritage Conservancy Foundation. Anyone who wants to show up early and help clean the hill of debris will be greatly appreciated.
WEATHER and DATES: This event may get postponed until April or May depending on the spring weather. We'll see, stay tuned.
BEGINNERS/NEWBIES-This is probably THE BESTEST OF THE BEST of one day events for you to attend and learn about and get hooked on slalom!!! Bring slalom gear if you have any, otherwise don't sweat it, most of us bring extra setups to loan out. You'll be covered. DO BRING A HELMET AND PADS, and slide gloves or wrist guards, a heavy jacket would be good to avoid road rash. If you find yourself having a hard time figuring out slalom and making the turns, just grab anyone who looks like they know what they're doing and they'll gladly give you pointers.
WHAT: This is a low-key and not very competetive get-together slalom session to start the Cascade Slalom Association racing season and model the latest in helmet fashions. This event is geared heavily towards beginners, helmets, having a good time riding and eating. I will bring my helmet, dinky BBQ, burgers, sausages, vegan veggie burgers, buns, veggies, condiments, salad and fruit, plates, cups, some drinking water, a handwashing station with soap and paper towels and a spare helmet.
COURSES: There will be 2 courses for wearing helmets, one large and fast and on the Giant/Big Genera(hybrid) scheme, the other will be a tighter (but not really "that" tight) General(hybrid) theme. If enough peaple wearing their helmets get tired of one or both courses at some point and want to change them, that will be allowed as it has been in the past.
TIMERS AND COMPETITION: If someone wants to bring a timer and set it up, we will race single lane against-the-clock with helmets so the other course will be free for those who just want to enjoy the good vibe of carving cones with a helmet on without the racing aspect.
OFFICIALITY: This will be an "outlaw" event, historically the local park maintenance staff and park visitors dig watching us wear our helmets and slaloming, so lets pick up garbage, not be a nuisance,etc as everyone has been great about this in the past-Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!! Bring a park deck to go to one of the nearby skateparks in case we ge busted(not likely, it hasn't happened yet).
HELMETS: YES, Please!!! and Thank You!! to everyone for past compliance on this. CSA is planning a national level 2 day slalom event at this hill in the future(maybe this year), We need people seeing us with HELMETS ON, and news of an unhelmeted head injury will likely kill our chances of future use of this hill, including the BBQ events like this. Brian-Khiro-Rogers(R.I.P.)is DEAD from a no-helmet head injury and at least ten in the slalom community have fallen with helmets on in the last few years and were knocked unconscious and would have been dead(or worse)if not for their helmets. HILLS KILL! Alva and Salba, Hackett and Olson wear helmets, you can too.
Other safety gear is strongly reccomended. This is a skate at your own risk slalom session and noone is liable but you if you get hurt.
WHAT TO BRING: Leaf Blowers, Brooms, Helmets, Dustpans, extra food and or small BBQ if you have one, extra water/drinks, cones, chalk, timer system if you want to bring one, yourself and friends and family and their helmets.
FEE: Labor, leaf blowers, food contributions.
TR0PHIES: If we "really" race, there is very slim chance I might have trophies, but probably not. The previously mentioned bird/batboxes have been donated to Chintimini Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The free BBQ is what everyone will win just for showing up. Hey, that's all you really need anyway: cones, chalk, a slalom setup and a BBQ!
DIRECTIONS: Get onto I-5. Go to Salem, Oregon. Go to the south part of Salem(not south of Salem), It will be the end closest to Equador. Look for the HIGHWAY 22 exit, go West toward the Coast Range(and thus simultaniously, the coast as well) and away from the Cascades. This will become MISSION STREET(or Boulevard, I can't remember, just look for "MISSION"). Follow this as it mostly goes straight but does meander around somewhat and go about 2.3 to 2.7 miles from where you departed from I-5. Look to your LEFT/SOUTH(toward Lima, Peru) for a great big park called BUSH PARK. Look for a big track stadium and the parking entrance. The Soap Box Derby Hill will be right beside it. Park, grab your stuff and go skate, eat and blab and wear your helmet.

Due to timer issues, this turned into the funnest biggest slalom non-race get-together with a BIG newbie turnout. The non-race factor worked out great as it leant itself to having more riding going on and newbies were able to try more equipment and get more advice on riding technique and equipment from everyone else. It was fun, we probably had about 45 peaple all together throughout the day show up and ride. Thanks Everyone for coming to my event, helping to clean the hill, setup and teardown.
