WORLD LONGBOARD SKATEBOARD CHAMPIONSHIPS: San Diego 2004 News Release

The 2004 World Longboard Skateboard Championships set for September 18th & 19th in San Diego, California USA

San Diego, CA, -- With the Pacific Ocean surf in the air, California once again sets the standard for the extreme-sports world to follow, this time when it comes to the sport of skateboarding. Skaters who come to the YMCA Mission Valley Skatepark from all over the globe on Saturday and Sunday, September 18 & 19, will be part of a new era in skateboarding—the first annual World Longboard Skateboard Championships. With the highly anticipated film "Lords of Dogtown" expected to revolutionize skateboarding again, the time is right for a re-birth of the all around "real" skater.

Today, skateboarding and extreme sports are big business. From the media to the local city skateparks, skateboarding is everywhere you look. The latest progression on the boardwalks, to the poolriding scene, and finally to the skateparks, is riding a skateboard that is over the 31 inches length norm of the past decade. With this new slightly longer board, the ollie is not the end-all, and skaters are now able to reach new heights by having a limitless future to create and evolve naturally. The name "longboarding" was born to differentiate the two schools of skateboarding. The terms "old school, new school, and pool school" are no longer needed to label the different styles of skateboarding; skateboarding is becoming about the type of skating done; pool riding, vert, street, etc and not the length of the deck. The new rebellion and revolution is happening now.

"Skateboarding will no longer be one dimensional as it has been for the last decade; real skaters are pushing the envelope and becoming more radical and innovative as the whole skateboard industry and park construction/design progresses and evolves with them. We are witnessing a re-birth of skateboarding where skaters no longer become stagnate, and are finally coming full circle and re-discovering the soul, stoke and style that made skateboarding radical and rebellious in the first place. Any skateboard that is not a typical mass produced mini 31" kick-flip board is now considered and labeled a "longboard" by the public and media, so get prepared to witness the new blood and fury of the new generation of "longboard" skateboarders who are kickin' it in the pools, the parks, and any terrain that challenges their identity and potential. Skateboarding has no more limits now because Longboarding is the freedom of choice...it is the future." - Tasos/ President of the ILSA

Who is the best longboard skateboarder in the world? This is a question many have asked, and no-one has known the answer yet. In recent competitions on the global skateboard circuit, there has not been a yearly crowned "World Champion" so to speak, and this year will make history as we enter a new era of competition and progression in this sport of skateboarding. "Competition breeds excellence and progression for any sport, without it, there is stagnation." - ILSA

There will be eleven (11) individual "World Champions" crowned: one for each event. 100 points for Gold (1st place finish), 50 for Silver (2nd), and 25 for Bronze (3rd): the skateboarder with the most points becomes the "Overall World Champion" - Mens', Womens' & Juniors divisions.

Events at the World Championships will include: Street, Vert, Bowl, Freestyle, High Jump, & consecutive 360's. For sponsorship details and further information on this event, go to the official ILSA web site at ILSAskateboarding.com
