Steven King has been very instrumental in organizing the Hood River event.

The 1st annual Haulin in Hood River is a professional and open class Badlands Slalom and Tight Slalom Skateboard race in the 2002 FCR race series, and is one of the last chances to earn valuable qualifying points leading to the World Championships in October. The Haulin in Hood River will be held in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, in the center of the wind surfing capitol of the world: Hood River,Oregon. With snow covered Mount Hood and the recently-active volcano Mount St. Helens as a backdrop and the energy of downtown Hood River surrounding, racers will enjoy 2 days of heated battle.

The Courses

Dual Slalom
Saturday, August 10th will begin the race weekend with the Dual Slalom on Columbia street, 2 blocks from the town center. The course site is a wide road with a consistent pitch on a east facing hill with good pavement, a slight crown to the centerline and sidewalks for spectators. The run-out on this course is slightly less steep, ending with an uphill at 4th Street. Foot braking will NOT be necessary. For comparison, this hill has a similar pitch to Cambria, but twice as wide and surface like Golden Gate Park. Bring wheels in the 78 to 88 durometer range - you'll want the traction. Expect a technical course with cones all over the place, 40-50 gates ranging from 7 feet to 15 feet apart.

Dual Tight Slalom
Sunday, August 11th will be the date of the tight slalom. If a frenzied crowd of screaming fans presents a problem for your race psych, perhaps you should skip this one. Downtown Hood River in the summer is loaded with tourists from around the world, they will be screaming your name as you try to beat your opponent to the finish. Expect a fast course with offsets and stingers, 50-60 gates ranging from 6 1/2 to 12 feet apart. Plan to use wheels in the 80 to 94 durometer range - you'll want the speed. Bobby Piercy would have eaten this course for breakfast. Will the course eat you?

Getting There

By Air
PDX (Portland International) is a is served by United, Alaska, American, Northwest, America West, Deltaand several other airlines. It is sometimes less expensive to fly through Seattle to PDX - so check out the non-direct flights to Portland.

Car Rental
Ganging up on a rental car from PDX for the weekend is probably the best way to go. If you draw the car with Economy entertainment is provided en route. Look for Gilmour in the baggage area before you leave PDX. Gareth's "Field of Dreams" Slalom-mobile will be full of guys from Seattle, so don't be offended when he doesn't stop for you.

By Car
From Portland it's a 90 minute drive to Hood River on I-84. From Seattle, WA to Hood River - 4 hours. San Francisco, CA to Hood River - 13 hours. This assumes 80 mph non-stop, a Starbucks stop every 2 hours, a fresh bottle of Clear Eyes and a catheter. 101 to I-80 to I-5 to I-84. Be a man, make the drive. If you ride with Chaput
bring a show shovel and some cardboard to make a sign that says "I Will Brave Snow To Slalom Race. Hood River or Bust."

Lodging
There are many local hotels in Hood River that can accommodate you for $75 or less.
Click Here for an exhaustive list of lodging options. (Use the "Lodging" link at the bottom of the page for more options). If you're cheap like Mollica you can squat outside of town at one of the many State campgrounds. Oregon bears don't eat carbon fiber or urethane, so you'll be reasonably safe.
