Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) are pleased to announce the 2002 California Championship gravity racing series, with races at West LA College for skateboard, inline skate, classic luge (buttboard), street luge (both with and without pegs/booms), and gravity bikes. All races will count towards the IGSA world rankings, including slalom this year! There will be a variety of awards and prizes at each race, and at the end of the series there will be special series awards for the top point-getters.
Each of the dates will have racing for several sports and practice available at a reduced price for the sports not competing on that date. The events will take place rain or shine, but if it rains the schedules may change (for example a tight slalom might be postponed for rain, but luge would race in the rain).
Sunday, October 6th, Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) will be holding the forth day of slalom racing of the 2002 California Championship gravity racing series.
The race will be at West LA College and include: - tight slalom (skateboard) - skates and gates slalom (short board, long board over 36", inline skate) It will be a best of 3 run format (2 runs for longboard). For tight slalom there will be a 0.1 second penalty for hitting a cone, and no DQ for hitting too many. For the skates and gates slalom, all wheels must clear each gate base. It's legal (and fast) to hit the poles, so bring your knuckle and shin protection if you plan on hitting the poles. There will be an optional jump, you can take the slightly straighter and faster line over the jump, or go around the pole next to it.
This is a also a special event for ski and snowboard racers to practice for the upcoming winter race season. The skates and gates slalom course will be set to simulate an on-snow slalom course, with similar cadence and poles. As for all of our dates at WLAC, participants may choose to just practice (and skip the race) for a reduced fee. This is your only chance to hit some gates before the snow flies!
Be sure to have a look at the new TURNER CAMBRIA WHEELS, and if things go well you might win a set! Plus OUST BEARINGS is kicking in some of their hot new bearings as prizes, too!

Joining Westwood Ski and Sports Club as a full member is encouraged, and entitles you to participate in ski and snowboard races and trips, water ski trips, parties, skating practices, equipment discounts, and more. Please bring your checkbook to become a full member ($35/year). Day memberships are available for $5/day, and are required for all riders who are not full members (i.e.: non-member fees are $30, $40, and $15). Juniors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and will be charged only a practice fee even if they race. Spectators are free. Also, the first few who come early to help with the street cleaning and setup in the morning (and then teardown and cleanup at the end) will receive a free race entry!
Manufacturers and shop owners, it's not too late to supply prizes for these races! You can even just show up with something to add to the prize pool, and bring your banner to hang. We'll be sure to mention you in upcoming announcements. Thanks to Turner Downhill for kicking things off with sets of their new Cambria skateboard wheels, and to Kryptonics and Hyper for inline wheel prizes and Bones Bearings for their long time support!
Protective gear: for slalom and giant slalom helmets, pads (elbow and knee), and hand protection (gloves and/or wrist guards) are required, and hip pads are recommended. Please, no short shorts or tank tops. For street luge, buttboard, downhill skating, and gravity bikes, IGSA equipment rules will be used (helmets, leathers, and leather gloves are required). We're building an equipment pool to loan to new riders and people who forget things, please donate your old gear, it may save someone a long trip home!
See you there!

California Slalom Series #4 Results (California Championship Series date 7) West LA College, California 10/6/02
The fourth slalom of the 2002 California Championship series (and seventh date of the 10 date series) at West LA College featured a challenging tight slalom that left 2 racers with no finishes. Paul Price had a blazing run for the win over Richy and Attila. The tenth annual skates and gates slalom showed Wes Carpenter's gate bashing skill taking in the skateboard division, with Scott posting the fastest time of the day on inlines. The skates and gates race is derived from ski slalom races, and features racers knocking down the slalom poles at about 25 mph, plus hitting an optional jump between turns. The combination of speed, 35 turns, jumps, poles that will smack you in the face if you don't hit them down first, and sand bags that can trip you up if you miss your line intimidated many racers to not race. Fifth place skateboard took home Turner wheels, and winners all took home sets of Oust Bearings (the bearing of choice for Richy). At the end of the warm day, there were plenty of smiles from tired racers and friends and family.
