The Mississippi Chapter of Grass Roots Slalom will be hosting the biggest skateboard slalom race every seen in this state. This our first legal race with permits and all. Another twist to this race is that it will be held at night, under the lights. The first of it's kind I believe. We have great new sponsors and our base of local hotdogs is growing. We are very excited to have Red Bull energy drink and Fondren Renaissance Foundation ( www.fondren.org )on board with this event. The race will be held in a section of Metro Jackson called The Fondren District by locals. The Fondren District is one of Jackson's earliest cultural centers. A single wood frame general store was built in 1893, which launched a thriving suburbian community. Jackson's first "high-rise" suburban office building was built in Fondren. It was only five stories tall, but nothing around it exceeded two. In the early 1980's the trend in housing move to the out-lying suburbs and The Fondren District felt the pain of the loss of it's residents and retail shops. But now things are changing due to the efforts of the Fondren Renaissance Foundation. Fondren has found a new pride in its heritage and considers itself a historic neighborhood. There is renewed respect for old buildings, sites and artifacts. The movie theater is to be restored and the area has become a Mecca for restaurants and antique stores. The salvation of the neighborhood was its sense of community, the completeness of its commercial and residential areas, and the awareness of the residents that there is real substance there. People are actually moving back from the bedroom communities to live and shop in historic Fondren. Fondren prides itself in host events that will showcase the results of a strong community. In the past Fondren has hosted such events as the Tour Le Fleur Olympic qualifier cycling race and many more. That's where slalom skateboard racing comes in. Fondren has worked with us to provide a nice venue for our Grass Roots Slalom race. The venue is lined with coffee shops, restaurants, retail stores and even a skate shop. It really is a great spot for the slalom skater to come race and have a huge time.
Practice starts at 7:00pm, Qualifying at 8:00pm
Advanced and Junior/Beginner Classes
$500 guaranteed advanced class purse paying out to the top three finishers and $100 guaranteed Junior/Beginner purse also paying to the top three.

This is also the day that Jackson hosts the national level Tour Le Fleur Cycling race. Get in town early and check out some great criterium racing on the brick streets of downtown Jackson.
If your flying in the airport will be JAN (Jackson International)
Come on out and enjoy some fine southern hospitality brought to you by Red Bull Energy Drink and the Mississippi Chapter of Grass Roots Slalom!
ATTENTION: ABC Series points (Class "D") will be awarded for this event!
I must inform everyone that the surface on Fondren Hill is less than perfect, bring your Avalons and your Flashbacks. Don't get me wrong the surface is totally racable and everyone races on the same road. If you only race on perfect surfaces this may not be your race. I guarantee this hill will make for some very exciting races and the crowds will be big.
There will be a slalom clinic on Saturday, March 23th at 2:00pm on Road Kill Hill. Any new racer that attends this clinic will be given a coupon which will allow them to race in the Junior/Beginner class free of charge. The clinic will be excellent opportunity for the new racer to learn about slalom racing in general, slalom equipment, and slalom riding techique. I'll have plenty of loaner boards to choose from. |
