Twilight Criterium
On 1/27/2003 msk wrote in from (172.190.nnn.nnn)

My thought would be to go for it.

For the sport to grow, we have to attract new blood. Convincing the average street skater that slalom is cool is an uphill battle, and will continue to be until the magazines tell them its cool. The current mindset (at least from my experience) is that "skating is not a sport", and "competition has no place in skating". As far as the average kid is concerned, what we're doing *is* a sideshow. So as long as we're a sideshow, why not present it to people that are already there to see some racing? You've got 25,000 people there to see athletes engaging in a sport that requires strength, skill, and strategy. Give 'em a bit more. Even if only a small percentage is impressed or inspired, that's still a larger number than you could normally hope to reach any other way. Even if the surface isn't that great, a course can still be set that will provide exciting and challenging racing. WLAC has proven that you don't need La Costa-grade asphalt to have great racing. The spectators will never know the difference. All they'll know is that they saw something different, and hopefully will walk away impressed, and possibly inspired to take up slalom themselves. At the very least, they'll see there's more to skateboarding than a couple of kids messing up the handrail in front of the library...

Twilight Criterium - Athens, Georgia
On 1/26/2003 Rick S. wrote in from (66.190.nnn.nnn)

We've been holding organizational meetings for our local public skatepark and several people locally have been encouraging me to hold a slalom race on the weekend of April 26/27, 2003 in Athens, Georgia during a nationally known bicycle race, the Twilight Criterium.

The Twilight Criterium attracts crowds in excess of 25,000 lining the streets of downtown Athens, a college town just northeast of Atlanta with a population of just over 100,000.

There are pro's and con's

Pro - the crowds, the insurance is provided by the festival organizers, and no major slalom race is currently scheduled in April '03

Con - while the streets downtown might be the best venue for spectators, the surface isn't the best for slalom, and I don't want to present slalom racing as a "sideshow" to bike racing

I'm leaning towards doing the race, but if anyone would care to comment, I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Regardless, the Georgia State Championships are going down in August.

Thanks,
Rick

DC Winter Outlaw Series
On 1/24/2003 Brian P wrote in from (208.249.nnn.nnn)

ATTENTION DC Area Slalom racers!!!! I hate to cancal a race the day before but the Park and Ride is unskateable due to salt and sand and Fountainhead received snow last night and the high tomorrow is only 30 degrees with a 17 degree wind chill so melting is not going to happen. I think it is best to not expose us to this type of torture. So a postponement is probably the best solution. Sorry for the short notice.

The outlook for the next few weeks are very bad so the next official outlaw race will be on February 15th. Hopefully our area will thaw out by then. If anyone still has a desire to race several guys will be snowboarding at Whitetail on Sunday. I hear they have a Nastar course. So LBK, Ohm, WesE, Steeb, Slappy, and Vlad , I know I am a beginner but I’m calling you out.

I'll confirm the Jay sighting, Got to hangout at ASR with him today as Tony Magnusson showed he Hester and I Jays new shoe, he looks great!!!!. I've known Jay for a longtime, though we were never close friends I've had the fortune of skating with him for about 25 years, He came in and said Hi to Hester and they gave each other a big ol brotherly hug, Hester turned and said "Jay you know Arab" Jay turned and sez "Bro! How ya doin" and gave me that same brotherly hug, we got to chat for a few but I didnt want to interupt the business at hand so I said bye and let the boys get back to work. Also got to hang out with Shogo today, he kills me! Hopefully they will be back in the summer to session a pool I just helped design and build for a friend.

DC Winter Outlaw Series race #3
On 1/22/2003 Brian Parsons wrote in from (208.249.nnn.nnn)

DC is still stuck in a deep freeze. But if it is dry and the P&R is clear of salt and sand the Outlaw race is on for this weekend.

Longboard practice will start at 10am on Saturday. Traditional slalom practice will start at noon. Expect single lane for longboards and dual racing for shortboards.

It is going to be very cold and probably windy but its still better than not skating. Hope everyone will make it.

Location is Gaithersburg P&R , email if you need directions.

Is there an "official way" to join LAW? Keep in mind I'm not one to think that war is NEVER necessary, but, without hopping too high on the soap-box, I am openly against the one with Iraq and want to be more informed of the protests and possibly do my part "spread the word."

WAR

LBK,
I respect your opinion on war, I'm agianst the war with Iraq, But I'm all for a war against terrorism, it just happens to start in Iraq.

Instead of protesting I'll spend my time PRAYING that the men and women of the US services will do the job that needs to be done in hopes of having no more Innocent American Blood spilled on our streets, and that they will all return home safely.

Skatepark Expo
On 1/18/2003 Sasha wrote in from (206.15.nnn.nnn)

There's going to be a big skatepark expo thing at the San Diego Convention Center on the 28th and 29th. It's supposed to be a good thing to promote skatepark building in general. It will probably be more like a big advertisement for above ground skateparks though. I'll be doing a demo for Skatewave both days. But lots of bigwigs and good goings on are supposed to be happening. Just thought I'd let people know in case they were still in the area after ASR.

As Bush prepares us for war, I am compelled to publicly announce that I am against the war with Iraq. This makes me no less or no more an American, just an American in the greatest country that allows me to voice my dissent even if it is not of popular opinion.

I will be attending the war protests today in Washington DC with a skateboard in hand.

I was wondering if anyone out there would be interested in helping me with info on how to set up a race event here in Portland OR. The idea I have would involve a few diferent events including downhill at Mt tabor park, solom, and a push race. I don't know much about doing this so I just thought I would see what kind of response I get here. If anyone could offer help or info I would greatly appreciate it.
