My Feets
On 1/25/2007 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (70.167.nnn.nnn)

After I got out of highschool in '73, I headed back to Cali and hooked up with my oldest brother Ed who was a Wind and Sea local living near Tourmaline Surf Park just south of PB point. Enrolled at San Diego State, got a job at PB Surf shop and lived to surf with hopes to get a skateboarding career someday(still working on that too). I enjoyed skating barefoot everywhere. Being of samoan decent, my genetics seem to support tuff feet. That pic was after a 40mph crash at la costa where I only had shorts on. Speed wobbles led to a spectacular crash where I remained conscious enough to spread the road rash wealth evenly over various parts of my body. Needless to say, I was barefoot during that crash. And of course a day after it happened, we got the best swell we've had the entire year and yep.. you guessed it, I surfed my brains out with festering wounds and sometime during that next week Skateboarder Mag was interviewing me, got the pics and suddenly me feet were the talk of the globe.

As of today, I have a pedicure at least once a month. They are pampered now.

Cheers and thanks for asking!

Chris' Feet
On 1/25/2007 PG wrote in from United States  (198.151.nnn.nnn)

Chris,

That picture of your feet has always given me the willies. I remember the same picture also appeared in a book called "Hot Skateboarding" which was a great book for the day as I recall, a lot good info and very well written. Its been about 20 years since I last saw a copy, so it might read like a kooks guide to skating now. Maybe I will find a used copy somewhere someday.
Was that normally how your feet looked or was that after a crash?

Marking up History

I wonder how many skaters from the mid-70s can still stand on a board or even own one.

The real champs of the sport are the one's still promoting the sport today and are still worth a damn on their boards.

Hats' off to Chaput, Coleman, Rene' and the rest of you skate monkeys still skating it up.

As time permits, I'll get to scanning and poppin up some golden years stuff.

Cliff -

It's good to see you on this Forum -

You got a lotta great stuff to share here.

That would be cool if we can meet-up again in
the tight slalom event @ this years Encinitas Open.

Dang, .....I wanted to defeat the silver fox !

I thought you would like this pic:

Maybe this year.

As far as competing in my first 'organized' skateboard race -
it was 1969 & 1970 in Garden Grove, Ca.
I won them both years.

I then competed in the Worlds @ the L.A. Sports Arena -

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
( I took this INSPECTION STICKER off the bottom of one of my boards. )

I made the semi-finals in the Mens Slalom Event there,
but my brother David got real sick at the race -
so I took him and Richy back home to Orange County.

We were racing on that BIG WOODEN BAHNE RAMP that day.

It was wierd - every guy fell down, that I raced -
that ramp was slick.
I thought that ramp was cool, though.

My brother David and I entered this 1975 Contest -
( This is where we met Ty Page, and Chris Yandall. )
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

My brothers Richy, David and I competed in the
1975 CARSON SKATEBOARD CONTEST - someone told me Chris Chaput
was in the boys division - at that Contest.

My first big win racing -
was in 1976 in the Southern Calif. Downhill Speed Championship
@ one of the first Skateparks
around at that time, called ESCAPE COUNTRY -
up in the hills of Rancho Santa Margarita!

Pro Surfer Legend, the late Tom Padaca, who ran the race -
gave everyone a chance to beat my record -if they wanted,
-so the next week -
my brother David came back and KILLED MY TIME and won !
I was CHAMP for one week ! ....Oh well.

It was around this time ( 1975 - 1976 )that my brothers
Richy and David started to pass me up -
as far as skateboarding talent goes, Seriously !
I've always put those guys skateboarding ability above mine !
No 'Problemo' there ! -ha ha!
I've been trying to catch-up ever since ! Yikes !

A lot of skaters seem to have never ridden - or seen ESCAPE COUNTRY,
yet, it was up in those hills, in OC, -and if I'm not mistaken,
was built right before Carlsbad Skatepark !

If you read Rhyn Noll's latest Skateboard History Book -
entitled: 'SKATEBOARDING PAST PRESENT FUTURE' -
there are a bunch of photo's in there of

History

GI Joe,

Thanks for suggesting this forum idea to Adam. I too asked him to do the same thing years ago. By the way, I raced at the Banked Slalom at one of the old parks. I sucked, but it was great fun hanging out with Sam Puccio. He would call out, "Hey Slowberg" to Bob and bait others. It was a time of heavy peer pressure. He just liked giving a few guys some of their own medicine. I'd like to make it clear however that Bob Skoldberg was not deserving of this. He did a tremendous amount for Skateboard racing. The winner of the Banked Slalom I entered was none other than Charlie Ransom from the Badlands. No one could touch him that day.

Here is some historical trivia for everyone. The original team that later became the Northern California Hobie team was the "Topsiders". This was in 1964, in the clay wheel days, about ten years before Dogtown, the Z-Boys etc.

Chris Yandall needs to speak about his early days. He was one of the champs at Del Mar in 1975.

Gold Cup #?
On 1/19/2007 Joe Lehm wrote in from United States  (65.19.nnn.nnn)

Thanks Adam, History is important to alot of us and to those that don't care about it, they don'thave to read this forum. Rene, that's so cool that you have all of those early pics of your own history of skating, I'm sure lots of us wish that we had a collection like that. I'm hopeful that we will be able to share some questions and answers here to help us keep a good perspective on what has gone on before.

One of my earliest skate mentors was Jerry Valdez, and it still amazes me at how much he influenced my skating as well as everyone that skated with him. His early pool antics were WAY ahead of his time, like inventing the tail tap.

Which Gold Cup # was the one held at Marina del Rey? A banked slalom was held on their killer course, and I'm trying to figure out if it was the last one, or if any other Gold Cup events included a banked slalom. Steve Olson took first, Jerry took 2nd, I took 3rd. Was this the end of banked slalom for 20 years to come?

Rene, fantastic pictures and info.

It's really funny that after seeing pictures and hearing about little brother "The Brown Bomber " along with Maria , over the years, I can now count them as friends.

It's funny that after all these years of skating a lot of people that I looked up to back in the 70's Iv'e either met or have become friends with now.

I started skating Sept 7th 1976 aged 13.
It all started after a News Magazine type programme on TV showed film of the latest "New Craze" to come from America...Skateboarding!!

My Dad worked for the University of London at the time and was a heating and plumbing engineer. One of his jobs was to look after the heating in the University bookshop called "Dillons". One Sunday he was called in and had to sort out the heating and would I like to go along with Him.
This gave me the chance to wonder around the shop and I found the sports section. I saw a book named "Anybody's Skateboard Book". As I was working in a Greengrocers Store (Deli) at the time and so started saving my pennys.

So thats where it all began for Me.

It would be great to hear how others got stated?

Edwin (LSD)

Adam -
thanks for having this Forum.

I'm gonna get my notes & photo's together -
and be back to share some good stuff.

Way Cool.

But for now ...........

( I started Skateboarding in 1958/1959 ? ...
...borrowing my big brother Ray,
Larry Miller's, and Billy Kane's 2X4 wood boards...
with the hack/sawed off steel roller skates nailed
to the bottom )

In Garden Grove, Orange County, Calif. - - -
THE FAMILIES: The Bartol's, the Conroy's, The Lawn's,
Billy Kane, Larry Miller, and my big brother Ray -
were the ONLY people I ever saw skateboarding
around at that time !

I made my own Skateboard in 1961 -
hack-sawing a pair of steel skates in half.
They were then NAILED to a board - taken off the side
of an Orange crate !

I watched those old Children's TV Show's & saw the
Jack's & the Hobie Skateboard Team's on TV -
in the early 1960's - - -
but I was doing my own skateboarding thing in
Orange County, Calif.

I would go to a roller skating rink called SKATE RANCH -
and I would buy the so called 'clay wheels' there -
AND would experiment with those 'double action' trucks
that came off roller skating shoes !
A lot of hack-sawing steel !

Man, I wish I had EARLY photo's of
my brother Ray and me - back then.
