Push Races are becoming more popular and also more challenging as they are taken to a level approaching true 'cross country'. Crossing an entire city is where the real challenge is, and there are some VERY competitive racers pushing the limits on these courses. Last year at the Ditch Slap, the 8.3 cross town race was won by Robin McGurik, followed only inches behind by Will Brunson. Will tells me that Robin only pushed with ONE leg, the whole race, and while Will usually would push with both legs, he was forced to use only his strongest leg to keep Robin from pulling away.
Is this really a good idea? Does it lead to Giant Right Leg Syndrome? Who knows what Robin's nick name is, and does anyone have any bets on who will out push these guys this year? This kind of racing is very exciting because it lasts so long that you get to start sneering and grunting at your opponent!

Congratulations to Robert Wadley of Nashville,TN. His answers seem to be as close as we can get, for now. If anyone comes up with documented proof otherwise, please consider sharing it with the class. Robert will get a TSR Maryhill 2006 Championships DVD and copy of Downhill Motion from 1975 on DVD. This historical film shows Guy Grundy hitting 50 mph plus at La Costa, but I would say that the Signal Hill record is more official. The only other side note is that sometime soon Biker will either lose his 80 mph record because K-Rimes or Dalua will get it UN-ASSISTED, or he will break it himself using a side by side bungee/slingshot method to 'zip' up to speed. I'm not kidding, it's in the works, that's all I can say for now....
Here are Robert's answers:
50 mph Guy Grundy-Signal Hill 1975 or so
60 mph Gary Hardwick - Fountain Hills, AZ 1998 (although he said George Orton had the unofficial record of 60+mph)
70 mph Team TVS (probably Mark Golter in 2001 somewhere in the desert)
80 mph Biker Sherlock- airfield on Stunt Junkees 2005ish (Superbike tow in)
90 mph Biker Sherlock - airfield on Stunt Junkees 2005ish (Superbike tow in)

Since your talking record speeds on a skateboard I thought I would share. Forgive my crappy spelling up front.
For years I have been on a quest for the bigest fastest hill on this planet, Love going fast or loved !
Have been to Pikes Peak, Doner Pass,Austria, Brazil, New York,San Fran.,North Carolina, Even Ohio and oaklahoma beleave it or not. O ha, good old San Deigo Ca. I few others that could come to mind if the wind is strong egough at my back.
Thats all I care d about and racen was a formalaty.
The fastEST hill on this planet with butter smooth rd. that could kill you as fast as you steped on your board was not one of the hills above, when the kid tells you he hit 80 mph you should beleave him !

Thanks Flindt. Dodging cars is the one thing DC skaters have down. The key is to go high and spin...avoid the t-bone!
Yeah, I'll be coming out for some GMR real soon. Going to hit John O's pool as well. I'll hit you guys up.
I just want to travel and bomb crazy s#@!. A new gem is El Salvador. They have the best conditioned roads in Central America and about a dozen volcanoes. Really good terrain and great waves as well. I'm pushing for a trip in May if anyone's interested.

A World Record attempt is best accomplished by inviting the best candidates in the world to attend and giving each one 3 or 4 runs. This is how most records have been set to date, an open event is too wide of a field as everyone and their brother would like to think that they have what it takes to break 80mph, and this takes up way too much time and incurs too much risk of newbies crashing out. Going 70mph is a good indicator of what it might be like to go 80, but Biker tells me the the speed wobbles at 80 were worse than anything up to that point, and at 90 they actually calmed down. He was on a 40 inch board as well.
Go Figure!

rist is total grey area. I feel ive consistantly hit in the high 70s, and brushed 80 a few times, although I cant claim anything official, seeing as im using gps. IT doesnt give perfect readings, but does give a general ballpark. WE need a legit timing system on the hill, unfortunately the county is very hard to work with on a road that they hate skaters on in the first place. especially when some people want to do an open event.

We have had some students correctly identify SOME of the correct riders and places but I won't say which ones yet to give a fair chance to others that may still be doing their homework to come up with ALL of the right answers. I will say that while some of you may not think that Biker deserves credit for going 90 mph because he was towed in by motorcycle, for the purposes of this exercise his record does count (according to the posted disclaimer).
Remember that we are looking for the riders CREDITED with breaking these milestones which means published or filmed. This puts Rist in a grey area. I would also think it's fair to just say that "Team TVS" were the first to break the 70 mph barrier. So the question remains, who has hit 80, and who was the first to hit 50?

Is that Smallwood? You're always welcome to stay and skate GMR as long as I live near the road? You need to contact the Rogers Bros. for replaceable soles, they're really cheap as opposed to buying new shoes.

OK, let's see...raced in the EDI days, got a few IGSA points, rode GMR, got free stuff and argued with Chaput...and still not a pro? Hahaha...more of a Ho!!
I think you're a pro when you've made more money than you've put in.
And if anyone deserves a shoe sponsor, it's a downhiller!

Roger Hickey was hella-fast aswell in his time, he had the record before Gary at 55MPH!!!!!!!! Don't remember where or when Roger set that record, but I remember seeing it in a Guiness Book before. And John Hutson was one of the fastest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

I agree, but Gary went over 70MPH with Rick and I a few times in San Diego around the time he set the record. The 62.55MPH record that Gary set was on that hill in Arizona, at that time, September 27th, 1998, and against those 5 or 6 racers!!! There definately needs to be a new record to reflect how fast we are really going today!!!!!! Gary was the fastest in his day!!!!!!! Gary Hardwick and Lee Dansie will always be the fastest there ever was to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark Golter is on the list aswell. -------> Today, id say Dubes, K-Rimes, Mischo and Mercado are a few of the fastest downhillers!!!!!!!!

Pop Quiz: We'll send a free TSR DVD if you are the first to answer the following: WHO were the first skaters CREDITED with breaking 50mph, 60mph, 70mph, 80mph and 90mph? Extra DVD also awarded if you can name WHERE these milestones took place. Hint: 90mph took place on an Airstrip.
Disclaimer: Note the term "Credited" meaning found in magazines or video documentation. Skateboarding, not luging or skatecars, and not limited to only gravity power.

Racer X is driven to win difficult events. In addition he actually raced EVERY race and rode the skateparks on the same 33" board, with dozens of pre-drilled mounting holes. The Bear was no match for this All Terrain Vehicle! My 56" Supertanker barely has enough wheel base for me! Hey Jason, bring your Pimp Cup.

In bowl, street or vert skating there is only ONE kind of Pro:
You have your own production model board or shoe.
In Slalom there are TWO kinds of Pros:
You've qualified top 16 and competed in the 'A' class.
You have your own production model board or wheel.
In Speedbooarding there are Three kinds of Pros:
You've recieved ANY money on a podium in your leathers, getting showered by some beverage, standing next to at least 3 worthy competitors.(TSR podium is top 4)
You've beat ANY other rider in a real race heat, that is already a Pro.
You've competed at races in at least 3 different countries.
Speedboarders don't get their own production model boards or shoes.
You are NOT a Pro just because your sponsor has given you tons of product, flown you to an event, paid your entry fee, TOLD you that you'll get your own model soon. You are NOT a Pro just because you've taken 5th against 4 Pros, been racing since the EDI era, have IGSA points listed and a world ranking, ridden GMR, or argued with a race organizer or Chris Chaput.
So, Chris Miller, where exacxtly does this place you? It looks like the nearest DH race for you to work towards your Pro status will be Look Out Mtn in central Colorado. I think that you may already be Pro for Slalom.
