Thanks for all your input. That's what it's all about.
Do you guys have any suggestions on the recruitment of new racers? Finding new racers is my biggest problem right now. I quickly put togther a flyer last week before your sessions which outlines local hills, where to get equipment, local contacts and so forth. It needs refinement at this point. Brady, was it you that was working on the same? I'd like to see what you came up with.

I have been targeting the older guys at the local park in hopes they would get hooked and influence the younger guys. Younger guys means Dad with a car has to buy into it and get them to the hill.

I've got a couple of loaner boards for newbies to use but they only go so far(and I'm getting tired of seeing my boards ollied and kickflipped). I will probably use starter kits as first place prizes in my first races to get equipment into peoples hands. I may order some TLC wheels for second place and so on. Got any blems Howard?

All input is appreciated.
Thanks again guys.

Grass Roots Timing
On 1/16/2002 Scabs wrote in from (216.78.nnn.nnn)

As always, we need to be flexible but I feel it`s easiest to say that fairest way to start the race is on a call and not the line method, unless you have a more sophisticated timing mechanism. What we want to avoid is promoting jumping the gun. I like the walkie talkie start as the stopwatch guy and the bottom, gets a clear acknowledgement of GO. And with 2 walkie talkies and 2 timewatches. It`s a cheap and pretty accurate system. It`s just a matter of the starter knowing how to pass to prevent false starts

Ricky,

I think that the most important thing in this type of racing is consistancy in your race set up.

So, if in your events you prefer to have an untimed start, or fully timed start out of a chalk box drawn on the ground, or an unlimited push that starts when you cross the line... any of the scenerios you can come up with will work for Grass Roots racing... just be consistant and it will all be cool!

Try different things at various races... that way you can provide feedback to the rest of us on what works best! HR

start
On 1/16/2002 hg wrote in from (208.14.nnn.nnn)

It is pretty arbitrary. We've been using the end of the start box, and we try to catch the crossing of the front wheels. Realistically, we could be off by 0.1 seconds in the timing, but we're only using this for seeding, so it ultimately doesn't make a big difference. Note that we let riders push up to, but not past, the first cone.

Howard,
Your going to be tired of me but...

When you say "the starter flags when the racer crossed the line", which line? Do you mean the line at the exit of the start box or a line ending the push zone 15' before the first cone.

Do we time the push or not?

Sorry

start
On 1/16/2002 hg wrote in from (208.14.nnn.nnn)

The way we worked it in the qualifier round, racer start at will, and the starter flags when the racer crossed the line. Timer at the bottom writes down the time, or radios the time back up to the top.

In the dual phase, no flag - the starter just use verbal signals - "racers ready ?" (yes, yes) "set" "go". Line judge at the bottom determines winner, and signals the winning lane back to the starter, who keeps track.

Holder of the stopwatch stands at the finish line, and gets a flag (we used a cone) signal from the start line.

Hugh,
I'm with the G man, you've done a great job and have answered most of my questions about running a race with minimal help. Let me ask this. In timing the qualifing round with a digital stop watch, where do you suggest the stop watch operator stand. My thoughts are to have the watch operator stand at the finish line, taking a "start the clock" signal from a starter at the top of the hill. The starter could signal the "start the clock" in a few ways. He could use a green flag, a small air horn or simply a walkie talkie. Now... should we start the clock as the racer makes his first move out of a 3'X 5' start box or as he crosses a line at the end of his push just before entering the course. Basically do we time the push or not? I think this is an age old question and maybe this dead horse has been beat to the point of needing a forensic pathoigist to know if it's even a horse, but I would like to know what everyones thoughts are on this? Maybe we could include the concensous in the page Hugh put together, not as a way it has to be done but only as one way it could be done.

Thanks guys!

Hi All
Just to keep you posted...
Things are lookin good for a slalom bash right here in the Steel City, Sheffield, UK.

It would be great to get some sort of Knucklehead/GRS US presence. If we tie it all in and make sure the races fall in near to each other, who thinks they could make it over?
Any of you Knuckleheads?

Rich
Were talkin an indoor bash, here, with an outside chance of some outdoor running next door. The road in questi8on is the only access toi the Sheffield Ski Village(largest artiuficial slopes in Europe) so that's not so likely, we'll be lookin into it.

We had another great day of slalom today. Had two more new guys show up give it a go. The course was set in such a way that the newbies were cleaning it after an hour or so. The slope was gradual as to promote learning to pump. Clifton Jennings was showing his old winning form and Nate and Stevie from ParkX had a diffinate nack for slalom. They'll be at the top when race time comes. Much Thanks to Clifton, Terry, Bob, Nate, Stevie and Todd for showing up and giving it all they had.

We had a great day of slalom. Three came out and joined Josh and I today. One of the these was a skater about 18 years old and it took him about 4 runs through our hybrid course to get the feel of pumping and after that he was hooked. He was exceptionally fast running times just a second or second and a half over mine. We will be back on the hill tomorrow afternoon and he said he would be there along with the others. Another one of my skate buds from back in the day showed up and wouldn't touch a board. He'll come around...why did he show if he wasn't interested. Time will tell.
Finally the Grass is growing.

The Southern Chapter of GRS is hosting a gathering on Saturday morning at 10 am and again Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. We will be setting cones on the brand new asphalt of Concourse Drive which is one block east of ParkX Skatepark (Jetport Drive). Attending Sunday will be none other than the Godfather of skateboarding in Mississippi and my mentor as a young skater, Clifton Jennings. Clifton was the first skater in our area and was a great influence on many skaters in our area during the 70's and into the 80's until injury sidelined him. He is still very enthusiastic about skating and can't wait to slalom again after 20 years off. He is remebered by his original Quicksilver with Trackers and Sims Comps. He says it still around somewhere I have a modern board setup just for him as a welcome back gift.

It should be a good weekend of slalom and stories of the old days with the "Scolby" of Mississippi skating.

Actually during the day, it`s been warming up to mid 70s but at night it drops down to low 40s. Heater kicks in at 65% and even so I`m burried under the covers.

Perfect skating weather the past couple days but I`ve been busy digging out and restoring the drain field. It`s done now so I`ll be setting cones tomorrow. Rest assured that won`t be until after 11:00am when it warms up past the threshold...60%

Yeah I know, I`m thin blooded...heh heh heh !!!

Good news is after this front passes though, we should be seeing 80s this weekend (snicker snicker)
