Hey guys, Check this auction out. We should pool our resourses and grab these for starter boards or giveaways at contests.

Brian P - great idea! Several kids want to run slalom but don't want to spend another $110+ of their hard earned $$ or theeir parents dough ("Isn't ONE skateboard enough?"). Good call I'll be adding it into our format in So. O.C. Ca.

Those of you who haven't checked out the Grass Roots Slalom web site lately should look through it closely. Hugh has done a phenomenal job in fleshing out the site with really useful content, especially in the "Host a Race" section.
Nicely done, Hugh !

Ricky,
I am like you. I have organized a series of races in the DC area. But attracting new racers, I have found, requires some creativity.
The first race was a success but all of our newbies were older guys who were familier with slalom. With the exception of Curt Kimbel's son Will.
For our next race I have decided to have a longboard slalom race in addition to our traditional slalom race. Wide open GS style course that if you can ride a skateboard you can make it through the course. The format will be as many run as you can get in within an hour. Fastest time wins. This type of race keeps things simple. I know that the number of participants needs to be small to make this work but usually we have a small crowd.
I tell everybody about these races and direct them to this site or my site. If we can only get people to show up, after they race they will be hooked.
I am not sure that starter boards in shops are the way to go. Longboards are cool and alot of kids have Sector Nine and Gravity boards, shops carry them and you can set a slalom course that can be run on them.
Any other ideas?

Brady, I've had Starter boards in all two shops in town for a while now. At this point I'm not totally expecting someone to buy them, I'm just hoping they start a slalom conversation or prompt questions from people who see them. These are the boards I plan on using as prizes in a race. How many do you have coming out? I am looking up shops in New Orleans and Memphis now. Wouldn't it be terrible to have to race in the Big Easy.

Ricky, I was toying with a couple of local surf/skate shops by bringing an assortment of boards by so others can try them out. I offered to leave a board or two behind nut they kind of hinted they can`t be responsible for it. Maybe after I stop buying stuff for myself (like that`s ever gonna happen) I might buy one of the GRS starter boards to leave at the shop. My biggest problem right now is cones. I can go buy soccer cones and cut them down but I don`t want to make that investment if real slalom cones will soon be availble (Dave,Chris?).
I slacked off since the holidays but now it`s time to turn up the heat!!!!!! Let the bodies hit the floor.... (Drowning Pool) Let`s bring it on GRS, FASST, USSSF, UKSSA, FCR, SSS, heck even ISSA (I`m gonna catch S--T for that) ;-)

Thanks for all your input. That's what it's all about. Do you guys have any suggestions on the recruitment of new racers? Finding new racers is my biggest problem right now. I quickly put togther a flyer last week before your sessions which outlines local hills, where to get equipment, local contacts and so forth. It needs refinement at this point. Brady, was it you that was working on the same? I'd like to see what you came up with.
I have been targeting the older guys at the local park in hopes they would get hooked and influence the younger guys. Younger guys means Dad with a car has to buy into it and get them to the hill.
I've got a couple of loaner boards for newbies to use but they only go so far(and I'm getting tired of seeing my boards ollied and kickflipped). I will probably use starter kits as first place prizes in my first races to get equipment into peoples hands. I may order some TLC wheels for second place and so on. Got any blems Howard?
All input is appreciated. Thanks again guys.

As always, we need to be flexible but I feel it`s easiest to say that fairest way to start the race is on a call and not the line method, unless you have a more sophisticated timing mechanism. What we want to avoid is promoting jumping the gun. I like the walkie talkie start as the stopwatch guy and the bottom, gets a clear acknowledgement of GO. And with 2 walkie talkies and 2 timewatches. It`s a cheap and pretty accurate system. It`s just a matter of the starter knowing how to pass to prevent false starts

Ricky,
I think that the most important thing in this type of racing is consistancy in your race set up.
So, if in your events you prefer to have an untimed start, or fully timed start out of a chalk box drawn on the ground, or an unlimited push that starts when you cross the line... any of the scenerios you can come up with will work for Grass Roots racing... just be consistant and it will all be cool!
Try different things at various races... that way you can provide feedback to the rest of us on what works best! HR

It is pretty arbitrary. We've been using the end of the start box, and we try to catch the crossing of the front wheels. Realistically, we could be off by 0.1 seconds in the timing, but we're only using this for seeding, so it ultimately doesn't make a big difference. Note that we let riders push up to, but not past, the first cone.

Howard, Your going to be tired of me but...
When you say "the starter flags when the racer crossed the line", which line? Do you mean the line at the exit of the start box or a line ending the push zone 15' before the first cone.
Do we time the push or not?
Sorry

The way we worked it in the qualifier round, racer start at will, and the starter flags when the racer crossed the line. Timer at the bottom writes down the time, or radios the time back up to the top.
In the dual phase, no flag - the starter just use verbal signals - "racers ready ?" (yes, yes) "set" "go". Line judge at the bottom determines winner, and signals the winning lane back to the starter, who keeps track.

Holder of the stopwatch stands at the finish line, and gets a flag (we used a cone) signal from the start line.
