Downhill & Zen
On 7/28/2021 Rick R Kludy wrote in from United States  (68.101.nnn.nnn)

I HAVE LOST MY ZEN !
Recieved real Zen a year or two after starting to racing . To understand REAL focus I had to be in that life and death situation which at that time was.Roofer and younger I was a mean Roofer; would go off on anyone that pissed me off. I had a wife; 4 kids , two dogs and cats to feed ! After my 1st race I became calm and focus for days. After that I started to fully receive ZEN untill my life soulmate died and left me and 4 young kids. Became angy again and did not race much but raced angy when I did. Been 15 years and would like my Zen back.Wish I had someplace fun for me as I age to race. Downhill Skateboard racing is alot more than a bunch of pot heads and drunks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Now many years later; I am much older and my skateboard is still there ready for me . Now 59 and can no longer take big hits decided to stop. Still my skateboard is there ready for me. With time the skateboard has changed alot but still my best friend ! Myfriend it time to ride !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Biker!
On 1/19/2021 slow poser. slowser? wrote in from United States  (68.48.nnn.nnn)

I'm becoming a bigger and bigger fan of Zak Maytum's podcast where he interviews downhillers about that late 90's/early 00's Biker/X Games/Gravity Games era. I've got a small collection of "period correct" downhill boards including one of Biker's Gravity Games boards that I bought from the Dregs bankruptcy auction a number of years ago, and a TVS board that was bought new-old-stock from that shop in Maryland where the owner killed his brother.

Stay safe out there, brethren!

Buttery VT/NH hills
On 10/30/2020 PSR wrote in from United States  (166.182.nnn.nnn)

Funny thing w/ Biker... I admired his Spirit, his crazy 'Just go Fast'-er mentality. But I learned about Speed the hard-way, where-in my roads ended in wooden covered bridges, or crossing rail-road tracks, or, like at Brown's University Hill, had Cobblestone cross-walks (much of Boston feature those! Yuk!). So I learned to 'Pace' a hill. You'd Bomb the flatter sections, then slow-up with Super-G carves to stay alive on the 10% grade stuff. At hills like Ascutney, Sliding a Carve is your ONLY option, foot-braking won't cut it (17% Avg Grade), but, I don't, can't, bend enough to Coleman-slide anymore. So, in my mind, 10% is steep enough, for a Venue. The hills up around Mt. Snow show some promise, but I gotta get the Local's to support a Race, and funnel traffic Around. But, I'm hopeful that, should the roads survive plowing/salting, it might work out.

An aside note; besides Darren Lott, I was the 'other' Luger who got f#cked-over by Biker's Dad by showing up at Brown-U with a Wooden Sled. Unlike Barren, whose design could incorporate some metal tubing, mine was a wooden leaf-spring made of crutches, with a wide Hardwood deck/pan on top. Bumps like the Cobblestone weren't even an Issue for me and 'the Crutch'. She's run 75 mph, no issues, and I still have her. Built it in '81. Biker's "Rules" kept me out of the X-games, but My Sled fared far better than a few 'metal' sleds did...

Buttery Roads
On 10/15/2020 PSR wrote in from United States  (166.182.nnn.nnn)

Bill Tway (of 'The Farm' hosting-fame) noted on FB that he was up in Jamaica, VT, where I happened upon a pair of roads that haven't seen fresh tar in 30 years. Oh, and an 'extension' of one of those, that, sadly, becomes Dirt, just as it gets Steep&Funner.. But, I digress; Bill called me back after my text to him, and we 'almost' met-up for some riding, but, the weather changed-up, and wet-leaves from Foliage season, yah, Not a good thing... I've charted-out 4 hills though that have new tar, epic terrain, and low-traffic all within 30 miles of my Brattleboro location. They'll all see Salt & snow, plowing, etc, so, I won't know what'll be useful next Spring. If there's one or two in good repair, I might start thinking of putting together a Contest. How does a combined Luge/DH-Stand-up/G.S. or Super-G over a weekend sound? Both NH and VT are doing well with C-19, and I'm hoping, by next Summer, a gathering can occur without undue Risk. Let me know what ya think!

another, 'fresh' black-hill...
On 9/18/2020 PSR wrote in from United States  (166.182.nnn.nnn)

OMG, the world is gonna end, but I'm Surfin' Tar as it implodes! The lil' ol' Village of Walpole, N.H., just re-tarred Main Street, and, (drumroll, please) the Hill Above That!! Unreal! I hit the 'lower' by parking at the School at about 6pm, and hiked up about 2 miles. I ran the Comet 40" DH/KT with Smoke-bombs (the Goodyear rubber 80mm luge wheels), so that I could Decel with carved turns, and leave Rubber Tracks behind. I met 3 cars, 1 pickup-truck on my way down, so, light, light Traffic at this hour. It took me 3-1/2 minutes to get back to my car. I was averaging about 42 mph, carving it, Not Bombing it! So stoked! Sadly, I know that by next spring, the Salt & plows will have made a mess of this run. But, for those of ya in New-England/up-state N.Y., this is a 'Bonus Run' in your fall foliage tours!

Tunnelling...
On 9/3/2020 PSR wrote in from United States  (166.182.nnn.nnn)

My Kid's Godfather spotted me an Online Order (I don't put my credit card 'out there'!) from Strangehouse (in central Virginia, so 13.5 hrs. drive from me). Sadly, Frank popped the wheels into a "3-Day" USPS envelope, just as T-rump decided to disembowel the Post Office using his Crony Mr. DeJoy's Ploy of Removing the Sorting Machines. They took Weeks to get here... [Damned Cheating GOP Fools!!] . Anyhow, the Tarantulas were worth waiting for!! Almost as fast, and as sticky, as my 80A Nersh Tophats, even with being quite a bit smaller around, and a lot narrower. There as nimble as an Avalon, but smoother than even Black-Ops versions. My Estlund S-camber never felt this easy to turn AND Stable, and Fast, all at once! It makes me think the Krakatoa might have some merit (and as a Luge wheel, as well), but, I can't find those anymore, either.. I told Frank to use UPS or Fed-Ex until, at least February, as the USPS is kinda like that Costner movie, only, missing a few ponies.

Seeing how it is just me again; I SHALL SHARE !!!!!!!!!!1
Thinking alot about racen my skateboard and all the different hills I have raced on; up till the last 5 years of my racen life always raced pretty much the same guys !Even when new guys came in I still had the same frame of mind. Trained like I raced; as soon as that skateboard pointed downhill my focus was there 100% !!!!1 No mater what hill or race it was it was not a mater of what I wanted like to win that heat or that event. IT WAS A MATER OF FACT TO CHASE THAT GUY; CATCH THAT GUY; PASS THAT GUY TILL THERE WAS NO MORE HILL OR I CRASHED !!!!!!!!!!1
MAN I MISSED DOING THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Are still Standing (or Lying about on a Luge)
On 2/8/2020 PSR wrote in from United States  (166.182.nnn.nnn)

Fuk, Yay, I'm still alive!! Are You? I may 'lay down on the job to Luge It Faster', But, I Stand at the End of the Run. My inverse, "S-camber" deck is (now that I've owned both) a better stick (thanks, Eric Estlund!) than a new-edition LY EVO, because of the REAR FOOT against Camber placement. I need to go to Bru in moneychester Vt to make the concave correct, tubbed like we wish it could be... We'll be back; PSR has NO MONEY, NEVER DID. I work for IDEAS that Go Faster, always have. Eric, the "PSR" in 'no skool' wheels [Right, Chris, or did ya forget in that wine bottle?]
