Andy's right, he was ripping today on the Flashbacks. I rode buttboard for the first time today. bombed the hill standup a few times first, there's 45mph+ in the GSI new hampshire hill for all disciplines, 10% grade all the way. No problems with stand-up, although I'd prefer a frontside sweeper at the end rather than backside.

Then got goaded onto andy's buttboard. Advice to newbies: don't sit on a buttboard for the first time, with fresh Flashbacks, and head down a 45mph hill. Especially not with low-top Van's on, and slider gloves. First run terrible wobs, slid off the front at speed onto my ass. found a very loose wheel in the back, fixed it, figured that was the problem. It was, which allowed me to go real fast the next run, clean all the way, then hit the big crack at the bottom, wobs again and bucked off. Ran over my own right foot and ankle, which is elevated on a chair as I type. Which leaves only one choice:

Build one, and get good shoes and gloves by next week.

For the question about the fastest 70mm buttboard wheels,,There is nothing out there that will be faster than the Abec 11 70mm Flashbacks. Go for the 72 or 75a

HC,try these two things; First,bend Sideways at the waist,bringing your inside shoulder forward(keep it and your elbow OFF the tar!).This puts body mass well inside of the turn,and shifts a bit of weight forward as well. 2nd,with your big toes turned just a bit inwards,put your feet out for braking,BUT,put more pressure on the outside foot.When doing this,let your inside foot glide,and let that knee bend a bit more(Not Too much-not more than 60* from straight)but keep that foot hunting for the inside of the turn.Putting foot pressure on the outer foot seems wrong at first,kind of counter-intuitive,but it works pretty well as long as your foot is still more-or-less in front of the sled. As for pre-braking or hard braking for a corner,try a slight arch in the back(keep a hand on the sled!!)to increase pressure momentarily.Beware of unweighting the front wheels,as that can cause it's own set of problems. BTW,over on the 'luge' page,Chaput put up some nice photos of 'the pack' going through a sweeper.Look at the various brakng/body moves those riders use.That might help put my words in a better light..

Here is some more information on the Oklahoma Talimena Scenic Byway Race on June 14th, 15th and 16th.

This is a great technical road, nicknamed "Crash Course" by the Oklahoma locals. This course is 1.13 miles long with an average grade of 11%, and a maximum grade of 16%. Racers will start at an elevation of 1,971 feet, dropping 564 feet to 1,407 feet at the finish. There is an up-hill breaking area after the finish. The course has several very steep sections gaining speeds in the mid to upper 60's (mph) with a knarly chicane and a series of sharp turns you have to break for.

To the left you can see the Winding Stair "primitive" camping area with solar heated showers, And to the right you can see the intersection with Hwy 259 leading to Poteau, Ok. The staging area and starting line will be near the Winding Stair campgrounds.

All racers flying in from out of state should fly to Fort Smith Arkansas Regional Airport. It is a 44 min. drive from the airport to Poteau. Or you can make the 3 hour drive from Tulsa, Oklahoma City or Dallas Texas.
If you are camping, but want electric hookups and electrically heated water in the showers, you should drive to Cedar Lake Campgrounds, about 5-7 miles away from the course.

Anyways... I have been trying to figure out what makes dirtluging worth my time. I have been searching out the best combo to get this side of buttboarding the respect it "may" deserve... I have been pretty bummed out after putting some cash for dirt wheels and heavy-duty trucks (all from mountainboardz.com, thank you)and installing them on my buttboard. This all started when I read the chapter on "Dirtluging" from my copy of the Survival Luge Manual. Could not find a desent place to ride until this past weekend and all disillusions diappeared. I found a place where you dirtboarders would crap your pants! When I saw this place I thought I was dreaming. It's an golf course that was closed down (owners went bankrupted) and it sits today. Though the greens are now brown, the hills are smooth. And talk about paved paths! Miles and miles of golf cart asphalt paths to bomd on! The 12th tee-off is righteous. The grade has to be at least 12%! And a path comes right down it too! Talk about giving a choice, pick your poison: street or grass/dirt or both? Oh, by pure iggnorance I found out that going from grass to a paved way jumps you into hyperspeed. Scared the spit out of me! With a "oh, s#@!" I lean back on the grass and slowed abit and ended up into a jump (survived... lucky dumb-s#@!) catching air. Well I bet all who reads this call bull-s#@! so hopefully I wiil be dropping some pics in later to prove my thrill. Thanks Darren Lott for the chapter on dirt luging in his book. Almost dropped the idea but I guess I had to prove you wrong and came up with another side to buttboarding. Laters.

I didn't get an answer as to where's Dinosaur Point? I'm the buttboarder from Utah and I would like to get involved, either racing or spectator. I still would like to see a time-trials format within our sport. The weather here in Utah is getting righteous and I have started scouting out for more places to ride. Lots of hills around residential areas but not "safe" to risk riding.

The number of replys, even though overwellingly "yes" is not a strong enough response to allow us to commit to "Time Trial" event(s) at Dinosaur Point.

In the near future we will "test the waters" again.

Hey Mario... If you use 8mm thin machine nuts on your 8mm axles, they're going to look nearly identical anyway. I'm pretty sure they DON'T measure them... (shhh... mum's the word!) Just show them standard bearings and Randall hardware and go skate!

As for the legality of the trucks, scroll down and you'll see that some other people have said it is illegal to mix and match. If it's not an issue until I start winning, then it's not an issue, yet. But soon, very, very soon...

The IGSA rules have never stated that mixing baseplates and hangars from different trucks is illegal. "They" have never stated that putting custom axels in your trucks was illegal. "They" will not care unless you win a bunch of races on that board.
What Barret Race?

Silly rules! I hadn't realized putting R2 hangars on 35 degree baseplates was illegal. That's exactly the setup I run on my buttboard. What s#@!e is that? Next I'll be hearing that you can't replace the bushings! Or replace the kingpin! I had a skate shop (Skatewerks, NJ) replace my R2 axles with chrome-moly. I emailed IGSA (Bob Ozman) to ask them if this was legal and never got a reply. If that's illegal I won't be going to Barrett. At $150 entry fee, I really can't afford to replace my trucks with a new set or R2s.

If someone knows about the legality of switching axles, please speak up. (No they aren't any wider, yes, they use the same damn bearings.)
