I am new to the sport of street luge i don't know where to get gear or anythying like that the fastest i can get up to on the street luge is about 16-17mph what safty gear is avalable and what do i need to know if anyone has any info please e-mail me

OK OK I'll read it, but I am having allot of fun(safe fun) already. I added a truck to the front and tightened them all and the slight wobble I had is gone. Turning is easy, just requires a little body english. I am doing 38 - 40ish mph on the hills, but only for about 10 seconds. I need a longer run.

Hi hc,
I live in Eureka, in Humboldt County. Redwoods, rain and pot. It is about 6 hours north of SF. I moved here from the Bay Area about 3 months ago, before I discovered streetluge. My second woodie is finished and the better wheels make a big difference.
No I have not read the luge survival book, but it all seems pretty straight forward, common sense, safety, and being aware of your surroundings. I found the IGSA rules online, my board seems to qualify.

I am building my second woodie after building my first last week. Had to stop because the saw is loud at 1:00am. I live in Eureka, California and I am looking to meet some lugers. I have some nice hills a few hundred feet from my house, but I want to run a long stretch.

First I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday.
2002 was an interesting year for Gravity DB http://www.gravitydb.com . What started out as an effort to find other athletes has turned into a substantial database of information. I was surprised when the Athlete count reached 50 then 75 but now it is on the brink of reaching 100.
2002 saw the addition of webpages for Message Boards so everyone can check the most popular message boards from one page and Auctions/Classifieds to do the same thing.
Who knows where 2003 will take Gravity DB but already in the works is a FAQ/Tech Center database so key individual will have the ability to add their experience and knowledge for others to learn from.
Also, don't forget to update your profiles especially email address and ages. To do so use the following link to go to the Gravity DB http://www.gravitydb.com main page and click the Member Login tab in the upper right hand corner of the screen. I have added birth dates to the database so if you choose to enter yours you will no longer need to update your age every year.

I like the idea of keeping with skateboard trucks and wheels... or something similar... non-pneumatic wheels... skateboard wheels up to 4" or so...
farings and other aero gear but maybe with a less than 50% of the riders body can be covered... would still like to see a total max weight spec too, as well as length/width...

between these two eras, faired bikes became popular because they were easy to build. But in this race you have to push up a hill first, and again at the end. Pushing a bike is hard, unstable when slow. The low 3 wheel design is much faster than a bike anyway. These races are 3 in a heat bikes were involved in some huge crashes and got banned (big pinwheel, haybail-jumping crashes), now its 3 wheel minimum on ground at all times.

Thanks for the link. The "Virtual Edge" cutaway shows pretty much what I was thinking, except that I was imagining a 3- or 4-wheel design. Anyway, I've trashed that design and come up with something else with smaller wheels....

Duane, you're a wealth of knowledge, I hope Marcus taps you for rule ideas.
My thought that pneumatics would be good was based on the fact that the gravity bikes are so damn fast. And they don't seem to be dangerous running on pneumatics. At the SF race, stock gravity bikes were putting in the same times as the buttboards, and the fairing bikes were way faster than the streetluges, even though the bikes had a much larger frontal area. I was thinking that a gravity machine combining the small frontal area of a luge with the fairing and running gear of a grav bike would kick major ass. But maybe the rules won't allow for something like that. Too bad, just another sketch in the pile.

Marcus.. Any vibe on the general trends brewing in street luge ? This "run what you brung" open class idea looks very interesting . Might take a little time to sort out, but so what? Grass roots innovation is one of the driving engines in the evolution of our sport.

I would advise against allowing larger wheels, or pnuematics. The 10" panaracers are fast but not until you put 250 psi in them. At which point, they explode regularly, sometimes on the street, sometimes in your face. Brakes should be allowed, with these speeds you can't rely on your feet, and besides with fairings it is much safer to have your legs inside the car. I've been involved in this type of racing for 20 years and there has not been a single leg injury. I would also advise rules stating that the driver needs to be able to be removed quickly, from the outside; just last year paramedics had to clip off the front of a skatecar that crashed, because the accident knocked the driver out. latches were on the inside !

I can't wait to see the rules, the gears are turning already. But I don't know why you are limiting the wheel size to 5". Does anyone make a decent 5" wheel or are you forcing manufacturers to scramble? I'd rather see the limit at 8" or 10" so I could run a pneumatic. But whatever you decide, I'll race the class, just so long as I don't have to run a front boom.

The IGSA will have an unlimited class in 2003. We are still working out the details however I can tell you that the rules will be as wide open as possible.
In a nutshell there will be a maximum weight of 25kg / 55.6lbs, minimum and maximum lengths, a wheel diameter limit of 130mm, track width and board width limit of 24". Crush zones or bumpers will be required along with a few other basic safety restrictions.
Boomless, fairings, ground effects, custom wheels, custom bearings, custom trucks, speedsuits, composites, spoilers, gurney flaps, and just about anything else that can be dreamed up will not only be allowed but encouraged! Our aim is to let the designers design and the innovaters innovate. Look for full rules to be released at gravity-sports.com in early January. Merry Christmas!!!

I heard that the IGSA was going to run some kind of "Unlimited" class for streetluge next year. Does anyone know what the rules are? I looked at the IGSA site and found nothing on the subject. I'd love to run a monster buttboard with 8 big wheels, no pegs, etc.
