Fun Ride @ Barrett Grand Prix July 17th, 2004
Anyone who's any one who rides a luge & stand up also should come out to Barrett *during late morning through the after noon*.ABC family is shooting a TV show called "Switched" on the day of Saturday, July 17.
The "switchy" will be someone who hasn’t ever tried street luge before and will be taught for the fist time, lets show how were nothing but the big family that we are and willing to help anybody out such as newbie’s. This is a great opportunity to allow our sport to reach all the young viewers out there and possible new franchises who might be interested in out sport, and most of all showing how much heart and Fun we have doing it just to do it.
There will be a film crew there filming the "switchy" leaning to luge. YES there will permits to close the road and there will also be hay bails out. Your more then welcome to show up, but you agree to ride at your own risk! Lets make this a great opportunity for our sports and show what its all about.

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

Hey Andreas and all!!! John and I had such a great time in Sweden! Thanks to all of you for treating us like part of your family. Can't wait for next year!! Congratulations to Petter on the success of his first event!
Much thanks goes to Petter and Jennifer for their great hospitality. Hope to be able to return the favor if we see some of you in California this year.
It was great to meet and ride luge with the Meijer family...glad all of us are safe after some of the wild crashes experienced in the practice and racing. The Meijers got faster with every run and really seem to enjoy the sport of street luge.
Andreas, Matte and Chris showed great potential in their first luge race and we hope that a few more riders get "hooked" on luge before next year's race.

The event was as we know the thirst to run a womens Class that Sandra Costa won. The roger bros were crowned King of the hill in street luge and stand up.

Um,Skyler,about 27 years back,I was doing what you're doing,only back then Kryptonics C-series wheels would've toasted any 50mm wheel I can think of...Oh,and I never went in for the softwood,2x4 method of construction! It's dumb to think that Softwood can withstand the vibrations associated with higher speeds.Please,think bigger,sturdier,and use common sense.Don't use cheap bolts,get wheels that roll + grip,ditch any building material that's softer than Birch Wood. I've made some funky looking rides in the day,a few outa wood that might get a laugh,at least until they get noted on Radar,BUT I never skimped on materials.Your own safety is in your hands when you build un-regulated sleds.Some work(like my sled made out of crutches)may look silly,while others try for looking the part without understanding why there are Tech Inspections.$170 bucks,eh? I built four sister sleds out of Aluminium Wheelchair ramps (big long hunks of C-channel) some 15 years ago,2 of which I know are still in use.My cost,wheels,trucks,padded seats,risers,footpegs inclusive was less than $100 a sled.The fastest of them hit 78 mph here in VT,on Route 9 near Searsburg/Wilmington(check your topo maps,you'll see why)without a hitch or wobble. Luging is a great sport,and can be even safer than most would think.Your equipment is one thing you should never have totally fail.Riders who don't think in terms of making stuff burly are the one's you'll see in the haybales... BTW,while I still have two of my old 'woodies',I ride on Chromoly Tubing in a form-fitted Fiberglass seatpan these days.

hey people, my name is Skyler and I street luge at the age of 13. If you are looking into stret luging as a new hobbie, I think you should. Its not too expemsive nor is it too dangerous. The street luge i home-made was about 170$ to make. Some pine, some aluminanium, grip tape and of course 50mm tires, pig bearings, independent trucks and about 300 nuts and bolts of all sizes mostly 3/8th's. If you never have street luged before, start out slow (10-20 mph) for a few days then (20-30mph) and after every few days, Check EVERY nut and bolt(i crashed pretty bad when i didnt) then when you reach up to 50+ mph, haull a$$ and go as fast as you want. dont ever overdo your turns, at the end or after the apex, your luge might sweep or crab to the left or right then into the ditch or gravel. (gravel really really hurts)
Building:
use as much money as you need, dont set up a money limit.
Buy the best things you can get, bearings, tires, trucks etc.
When you cut the main board (if it's wood) measure 2 times, and cut onetime. Measure your height.
If you dont trust your luge, there is something wrong with it.

Hey, I'm trying to find some info on the luge demo at the gorge games. I see the schedule and that the demo is invite only but can an amatuer take a couple of runs while the course is set up? Maybe during practice times in the morning? Any Ideas who I can talk to about this? I've hiked this trial but never taken a run on it due to foot traffic. Should be a great course!

Picture if you will two-mountain bike like wheels incorporated into a tubular aluminum framed surfboard. It is called “In-Line boarding”. Featured on CBC POV Sports December 20th 2003. With a future airing September 2004 on the Discovery Channel & a member of the Canadian National Snowboarding teams use of them for off Season training accrediting its existence. The sport itself is as young as was snowboarding in the 80’s. And gaining the same popularity.
But the draw of the hill is the beast that keeps us trudging ever forward. The feel of the carve; the wind in your face; so open so free; so exposed to the elements that greet your wheels as you fly down the hill. We all know that experience. so geezer, it's the system (axles and spacers and nut) that adds strength? could a 8mm randal RII conversion for riding 2 abec 11 wheels per truck (versus the 4 kryptos) still handle the sideloads? my last question is if i were to bend an axle after your conversion could the axle be replaced (of course not for free) or is the whole hanger trashed?

I make big, beefy bearing spacers and between-the-wheels spacers, and as long as you keep your axle nuts tight to hold the assembly all loaded in compression, you're good. I'm also looking at an oversize axle conversion that will allow quick hanger width swaps...pics soon.

Hi luge guys.
I'm the proprietor of Monkeywrench Machine Works (MMW) an engineering / fabrication company specializing in skate stuff, primarily slalom and downhill truck mods, like 8mm axles, variable width hangers, carbon fiber race decks, and anything racers dream up for skateboards, motorcycles, karts, race cars...whatever.
Here's why I'm in the luge forum.
I just did our first multi-wheel conversion for a luge guy, and it's cool. I started with the customer's Randal 180 hanger, trimmed it to 158 so the centerline of the pairs of wheels would be where the centers of single wheels would be, fitted a true 8mm CrMo axle with 46mm of free length on each end, and machined 4140 bearing spacers and between-wheel spacers.
With 4 85mm Kryps on the thing it's perfectly straight, spins for days, and should have KRAZY traction, as well as excellent speed. I hope to have pics up on our website soon.
Cost will be $55 / hanger plus return freight.

Complete information is now available for the IGSA Swiss World Cup. (www.sk8championship.ch) The event promises to be bigger and better than ever in 2004. Check out the virtual course map to see possibly the finest and safest gravity sports track in the world. Straw bales are only required on two corners with the remainder of the course surrounded by grass with no obstacles. The organizers have arranged free shuttle service from the Zurich (ZRH) airport. They have also arranged a shuttle on Sunday that will take competitors to the IGSA World Championships in Germany for only 10 euros!

I spoke with John Hughs yesterday at StinkHill and he's asked to me pass the word about the LaCostaOpen in July and in conjunction, the Reunion of origional 1970's Signal Hill StreetLuge/Downhill/Slalom skaters and their origional gear will be displayed to the public on the Saturday of the weekend race.
