Nope, it is foot steered, plus you could not lean your body due to the five point safety harness and full roll cage.

hc,
I don't know of a formula but I do know that on a fairly straight steep road (with good wheels, bearings, and straight axels) that my combined weight of around 270 lbs will smoke almost anyone who is not within about 10% of my combined weight.
But once it comes to turns (especially tight ones) the lighter guys are able to keep much more of their speed in the turns and especially when exiting them.
So there does seem to be a trade off there that will have to be dealt with depending upon what type of a road your running. The heavier you are the more speed you'll scrub in the turns and the faster you'll wear out your wheels! HR

cool article, steve.
question for the lugers regarding adding weight to the boards.
Recently, I been buttboarding and also trying out other's luge (luge weighing in @30-40lb, buttboard @10lb). I notice a big speed increase on the luge, i believe that weight has a lot to do with it, plus the oversize wheels and lower profile.
I am wondering if there is a general formula/guide for calculating the optimum weight.
Sample run, 2:10 sec on buttboard. 2:00 on luge. I weigh in at 145lb.
Also, There seems to be no mention of ballast rules for buttboard under IGSA.

david, haven't seen the old rollerball in awhile, but i remember it was a weird sci fi, about rollerskater vs atv rider in a bowl, a televised death sport, kind of like the rep that luge has. ;)

hc, i have seen the previews for rollerball to, looks cool, but i still don't understand how getting air on a luge is related to some sort of extreme roller derby. did you notice that biker was wearing his dregs leathers?

Posted for John Lewis webmaster Streetluge.com Streetluge.com has been offline, due to a major server crash. The site should be back online, for the most part, sometime today. We are in the process of adding a new message board program that will be supported by the new server, as the old, (very old) message board program is not supported with the new server system. So it may be a day or two more, before the message board is up, but the site should be back online today. We appologize for the delay, and inconvenience.
Thanks, John Lewis Webmaster Streetluge.com

Mike, you are subject to arrest for just being inside the fences on US interstates, as a pedestrian / hitchhiker / whatever. Trust me, I got picked up a few times at the ditch skating spots in Maryland growing up. US interstates tend to never run out of cars, unfortunately. I bet US101 dropping into Marin would be good for 80-90mph on a luge, but hundreds of thousands of cars per day, non-stop.

wo there after re-reading my post I realise it could be misinterpreted as a direct defience against the safety this site so carefully implies, what I meant when I said "15 miles of holding your tuck could get a man down but y'know ... I spose life could still go on." I meant that holding your tuck for 15 miles could really wear you out but I spose you could handle it

I still wanna skate it, I've skated a national road and I saw only two cars the whole time! Any road can be empty at the right time, what do the police say about skaters on highways in the states?(must be something crazy) also 15 miles of holding your tuck could get a man down but y'know ... I spose life could still go on.

Actually it's a bit more than a road... It's a multi-lane, well traveled Freeway (although technically it's a Highway) The steep part is around 15 miles long with around a 9% grade... many cars die going up it! There is probably 10 to 15 more miles of slight grade into Bishop. A very insane stretch of California... HR
