Dubes and I have both found that wheels matter very little for speeds above 70mph. Flywheels, Bigzigs, Black ops Vents, Gators, Venom Protos, Sector 9 (race formula and not) all yield indistinguishably close results. It's all about what you feel comfortable on.

i guess that's cool,but i was sort of hoping that someone might be able to quote a podium finnish of some sort at an official type of race, i think 85mm krypto's have done well in mostly straight races.They're urithane is light,i guess low density, so it does rev up real fast,it also shreds quickly and doesn't hold a real hard line in a turn,my initial opinion of gators is that they are very similar,even though you could go very fast with them,on the right type of hill.

A little birdie told me that "Dubester" (originally from Florida) has been known to break 70mph in Colorado, on the 71mm 'Gators.

anybody seriuosly racing them?i didn't really buy the hype on them the first time around, if they were more available around here i may have tried them ,or at least gotten a test ride to decide,but the bennett"mystery" ,"genius" thing is a bit off putting to me,sort of stupid,seems very much like an attempt at hype.

big zigs

Havn't seen or tryed the alligators ,the zigs are a sure thing to me ,it's been such a long time with abec 11 urithanes being solid colors i don't trust any transparent wheel. Well early abecs were sort of translucent cloudy,and the new seismics are kind of like that, i guess they're ok,people seem to be pretty hyped on them, i had a set(early ones) that were majorly flawed,wobbly ,they went back and i havn't bothered to get new ones. The alligators look way transparent like certain kryptonics/satories ect ect and that urithane is not to my liking both in grip, and in durability, those wheels just don't stay together in a real hard turn,they sort of drift like the the surface of the wheel is turning into fine urithane dust.

Smaller wheels have less "gyroscopic inertia" and will feel quicker to change direction but the tradeoff is........ less "gyroscopic inertia" :-) i.e. roll speed/momentum.

For me, smaller fronts and larger back wheels have been faster than the opposite way...Although I like the feeling of bigger fronts than rears better. I guess the stop watch wins when it comes right down to it.

I like the feeling of Speedvents for rear wheels. they seem more responsive to pumping input to me... maybe it's the bigger core and urethane depth. OR... it's just the groovy colors that make them faster. who knows??

BIG/small

Just been trying the new black ops Hot Spot blues on the front with 78 Black Ops Blue Speed Vents on the rear. Grip is fantastic and my favorite combo to date to ride on my training spots which tend to be a little rough. Does anyone run the big small combo? Anyone have any pros and cons about doing this? I only have just over a year in the slalom saddle so still experimenting with the idea that its equipment rather than lack of talent ;)

Faster cones

I retired my 'Pony' cones a few years back, after 2+ decades of service. Making cones isn't something that 'next year's model' can be a sales slogan for. But, I'd park 'Turner' cones that are in good shape, not that 3DM or Seismic won't have a collector's value in 20 years; they will, but just because 'Turner' cones are out of production, and not too many were made. Saying that, I then MUST go buy new cones, as my 'newest' cones are Turners, one of which has not my initials in it, but 'Macree' scribbled inside. Oooh, I'll be rocking the vitual Ebay-2030 edition with That One!!

Another Question.......

Since Eddyspagetti brought up the issue of cones, something else popped into my mind:

I have the old original "Turner" cones and "3DM" cones and I can't tell much difference between them, I also have the original "Seismic" cones from when Dan took over that part of slalom equipment and they seem pretty much the same as the "Turner" and "3DM" cones as far as I can tell.

Are the newest "Seismic" cones molded in a newer plastic as well? and if so, will they make me go any faster? Is it worth buying a whole new set of cones?

Firstly I will preface this with a note to say that I do import Dans wheels to the UK, so of course you may feel I'm biased.

Its been dificult, nye impossible, to get Abec 11 wheels in the UK for a while, and I had held out hoping for life to surface at Abec, to get more of the great Zigs.... I felt those wheels were the best out there, and they are fantastic wheels.

Most racers either used those or mixed them with Seismic/3dm combinations for riding. Dan assured me the new formula 'Black Ops' would be at least a match for Zigs. Luckily, as he keeps close contact with the Euro scene he understood why we would be keen to get wheels of high quality in quantity at the same time as the US. To that end he arranged super quick courior of wheels and personal deliveries to get sets under the wheels of racers as quickly as possible. He also sent sets of the Speedvents and Blastwaves to Nat, a long distance skater for feedback and testing. Having the new wheels in Paris was a bonus, we were able to try them and feedback was good, though at races people are sometimes reticent to change as they are familiar with their set ups. All I can say is that those that changed seemed very happy. It was great to see responses as that determines how quickly we re-order and what we get.

Martin is absolutely right, the grip from the start, right out of the box is amazing. A few yards of scrub and you can race with confidence. One of my customers bought Purples and Smoke Grey in what I thought would be ideal as front wheels, but put all four on his board and I was blown away by the grip. I also saw in Paris the same combo used by one off the lighter weight riders and he was happy, so it wasnt just a weight on top issue.

From my part in Paris I used the Purple/Grey combo for straight tight, then felt confident enough to use the same for offset. I used the purple speedvents for the Hybrid/Whatever the hell it was course... and they worked well for me there too. So now I am using harder wheels than I ever have on smooth surfaces.

The harder 'thane is less happy on rough surfaces which we have here, but thats to be expected. But the duros go down the scale so its all good.

Visually that Purple/Grey combo look very nice, kinda stealthy, but purposeful.

Overall I'd say you should at least TRY some Black Ops. Make up your own mind but try to get a ride on some.

Black Ops for a black dude...

Always make up your own mind...I rode my normal set-up for half the session,yellow/orange Hot Spots (86/84) that have not had much use,then swapped them for smoke/purple (87/84). They felt as though the roll speed was higher right off the bat and they had almost as much grip BEFORE I had worn the 'skin' off.
I rode them on the same courses, an offset varying from 6ft to 6.5ft and a Euro-style Pro course 5ft-6ft offset and they felt really good.
Obviously the stopwatch will be the real test, but I felt less resistance pushing the board and limpet-like grip - outstanding.
Looking forward to finding a hill to test them under high speed cornering, but its looking pretty bloody good so far...

Here's what Bish had to say about them..............................

"I ran the old orange on the front and the whites on the back for the tight without a problem however I wished I had changed to the black ops sooner.
I ran purple on the front and blue on the rear and went up four places in rankings. You could say i improved but I felt the wheels definitely gave me confidence.
The hype is real...these do not slide I tried everything I could to make them but they held. The rebound is unbelievable.
Everyone who rode them agreed" .

New Seismic Hotspots???????

So, has anyone ridden them enough yet to cone them in back and trim the front and make them just like your last set of Hotspots(or Avalons, or Zigzags or Manx's) and notice much difference?

I'm sure there is a difference and it's probably better, but I'm asking because everytime there's a new slalom wheel or same wheel in a new formula everyone talks about how awesomely revolutionary they are with endorsements by the "pros" then those same pros are riding something else a month or two later.

these new wheels are awesome, I friend of mine both them, I took it for a spin and they are fast, and have an amazing grip, havent tried it at high speeds but for sure they will handle it... all the s9 riders used them at the isga nationals at the bonelli hill in San Dimas, noah sakamoto got the 1st qualifier and the fastest time on the new wheels. So I dont think there is a doubt about those wheels.. just buy them and try it for your self!!
