Valorie, you can use a snowboard on sand, But it will eventually grind away the base. If you decide to ride a snowboard on sand, use Zardoz Not-Wax to help it glide, and pick a board you're not likely to want to use on snow again. One thing to consider is that edges don't help to extent they do in snow, and that formica is a better base material than p-tex, so beat-up snowboards are totally do-able for sand usage.

I last sandboarded there somewhat later than that, maybe 1993 or so. No better than a home-made selection of craft, most of which failed to work well. If you haven't been there in a while, the Ridge has really moved a lot, and last time I saw it there were two peaks almost equal in height, and a big pile very close to the road that has to be moved back often...quite different than the profile in the early 80's when there was one dominant ridge.

I may be going to the Outer Banks later this summer and I was wondering if anyone has sandboarded at Jockey's Ridge, Kill Devil Hills,NC lately. I last sandboarded there in 1983. This is the place where the hangliders take off and the dunes are big.

Hello Glen, We ride Sand Dune Park at Manhattan Beach a couple times each year just to remind us that it's there. It is probably the worst place we've ever boarded at but because it's so accessable and has the stair way up one side we ride it anyway. The sand isn't dune sand so it's pretty slow and the park authorities will fine you if they catch you there.
