A site with a few illustrated free-style tricks is www.bobstricktips.com...along with lots of other good stuff too. I like it because it has video examples, which really help out when you're tryin to get a trick down.

Shuvits are still the msot satisfying "trick" I can do on a skateboard. i have always loved them. I am trying to get my comet race slalom to "shuvit"...I'm getting there. I guess i am far to young, born in 74 to remember the soul-ful freestyle days. To me the essence of freestyle skateboarding are the times of Hosoi in the pipe, rocco and/or natas on the street into the days of the Gonz skating to some damn good jazz in Blind's video days....that looked soul-ful to me, a kid of the 80s really.

Henry, tell more about the freestyle hill carving event.
In my OPINION, I thought that when freestyle turned into the board flipping, hopping up and down on the end thing, that it lost a lot of the original feel that it had. The early La Costa footage of Ty Page, Steve Cathey, Skitch Hitchcock, and the others doing nose wheelies, endovers and doing more freeriding was really freestyle. When it became "routines" it lost all it's soul. The technique jumped lightyears but the soul vanished.

Well...isn't this special. Someone asked about
Keith Butterfield....last I saw of him was in '86,
up in Santa Cruz, we did a demo together, along with
Michell Kolar, at the Santa Cruz Auditorium.
Since this is a crossover site with slalom, our blood
brothers...does anyone remember the Staton Slalom Team of '77-'79 featuring Chris Foley, Craig Stein,
Gib Louis, Randy Garner, and Kevin Karnes???

In the past year, there has been a renewed interest in getting folks together and using contests as an excuse. I organized one such contest last year (November, 2000) in San Francisco, and this year alone, there have been four contests with flatland in them for both pros and ams. The WFSA (World Freestyle Skateboarding Association) has done a great job getting the word out and I think this is a positive thing. I think it would be easy and great to see it added to the X-Games, where BMX freestyle has found a place. I think flatland should have a defined place in skateboarding, and I continue to mix it into every session I am a part of, whether in a demo or just hanging with friends. As long as someone gets stoked when they see me spinning 360s or throwing a handstand fingerflip, I will continue to embrace and promote freestyle. Peace.

Webmaster Adam has done it again... We are greatly indebted to you for creating this user-friendly forum for us flatland stylists. Our event is far removed from downhill skateboarding, but we should also remember that slalom, downhill and freestyle did a lot of growing together in the 1970s, on the wide-open hills and smooth asphalt of La Costa. Perhaps our seemingly dissimilar events can renew that beautiful synergy during the current renaissance of all-around skateboarding. May it be so!
