Good info john,i tried fishing for numbers for a comp in sydney Aus and got 1 phone call and a few emails .I think the general public need to be educated more on longboarding in general. An ad in the local paper would,nt cost too much. From what i have found is most people find it good to watch, have a go and think that its way to dangerous and go back to being a spectator which is ok ,at least its generating intrest in the sport.Perseverance is the key,all must start off small before it becomes big.

Matt my advice to you is to advertise it. Get people to come. And them do another one about 3 months later and then another etc. It will take a while but if you are consistent you'll get the skaters you want. Most good competition circuits take about 2-3 annual events before they get good.
Our US scene took a while to get going. First tireless promoter IGSA's (International ZGravity Sports Association) Marcus Reitema held events that he grouped together in West LA College's campus.
By grouping a bunch of events he made it more interesting for spectators and participants Scott Peer who rana local ski club ran the slalom events with Marcus. He had buttboarding, gravity bikes, Inline GS, Shortboard Slalom GS and Longboard slalom GS and Tight slalom.
At first a few older skate pros- mostly ex freestylers showed and had a few races. It seemed no one even owned real cones. Caraasco won an event. Beau brown won an event. There was a whole year of a series of races. The next year it was much of the same. Chris chaput came out and started racing. I saw the racing out there and came out to race. Then East Coast/West coast rivalry really seemed to add air to the fire. NCDSA started to pick up in numbers of posts and interest. Jack Smith threw the Morro Bay contest which had a huge turnout. A series of outlaw races followed and regiaonal racing began to pop up. We got a few manufacturers on their feet and making stuff- TLP hosts a race series with FCR, Comet, Turner and we are up and running.
My slalom courses in NYC and Boston were much of hte same. Small almost disappointing turnout for the whole first year. Better though, still small turnout the second- just slightly improved. Then an explosion of new faces.
Give it a try and don't get discouraged.

any locals or anybody at all coming to hong kong... i wanna set up a comp around june 15th - june 30th for a day or so... there's quite a few spots to race... could advertise... put up flyers around.. i'm sure a tonne of shortboarders would be interested and come and watch... so,... if anybody is curious at all about this just e-mail me... if it's a post i might miss it so yeah. Peking Duck Surfboards (chinaskate.com) could come there and host it or something like that and promote their products.

Just got back from the best sk8 i have ever had on a longboard it was south of sydney at a place called Mt kiera. Its about 3-4ks long and just constant bend after bend.Cars keept abusing us saying we where mad and do you want to die.Half way down an abulance passes to pick up a motor cyclist who took on a car and lost.We cruised past the mayhem and it was,nt a good vibe at all.We where all on Abec 11 wheels and there where no complaints at all in that department(these wheels are fark n hot)There is alot of places to sk8 in the area with less cars its just a matter of going out and searching for them.

Those guys on Dogtown went on and on and on and on and on about each other, the first this and the biggest that, but in all it was educational, and h0dad went out and tried to be Alva for a night afterward. It did inspire. Had a sad vibe about it; like a remeniscence about the prime days...the surf spot these guys had was f&^%in great. Jay Adams in jail made h0dad sad, but hey.
