Longboarding in Japan
On 9/21/2003 Adam wrote in from (202.215.nnn.nnn)

There are two types of English speakers in Japan - those that ride longboards and those that don't. I figured after a few years living here the network would start to unfold but so far I know a lot of the second group of people and not so many longboarders. In that there is a hell of a lot of pavement here, I figured it was about time to start connecting with other folks. My vision is to start compiling information on favorite runs around Tokyo and expand out from there. Is there any interest?

nice kanufi, sounds like it'll be a fun setup! talked to joseph today, he's found a sweet spot so we'll check it out later this week. if it works out lets meet up again and run cones in two weeks or so, yee haw!
hey, any ideas how to get ahold of oldschool skateboards in Oz? there must be lots of dudes sitting on gear that hasn't been touched since the 70s, could get some bargains... perhaps i'll take an ad out in the paper.
in the meantime
happy skating

know how you feel Pete
On 9/16/2003 Dex wrote in from (144.132.nnn.nnn)

Yeah Pete, I know how you felt, It does suck! Anyway, as long as we're not racing (formally), or have anything set-up I think we are allowed to cruise, ahh........except where there are lines painted on the roads (the law sux). I run into problems at every step. The blood's beginning to boil again........I'd better just laugh at the whole situation it takes time for the law to keep up with innovation.

Dex's spelling & slalom
On 9/16/2003 Dex wrote in from (144.132.nnn.nnn)

Firstly, my spelling sux, I really should read my messages before I post them.
second, I've been sent a copy of the rules and reg's of the park. I'll go through them when I get a chance, to see what exactly is barring us.
Thirdly, there's the spot outside the cathedral in town (St Marys?) that seems skate friendly, we'd have to set up around all the kick flippers, but it seems pretty flat and it's got a good drop in section to start the runs off with.
aside from that we can have a few push sessions around the Park. Just no-one mention races or tournaments or things such as this.
Lastly, wear helmets! I think we can get a better reputation with the law if we're acting responsible. further to this, head injuries suck (except the Midnight Oil album).

What!!
On 9/16/2003 Haggy wrote in from (210.50.nnn.nnn)

Is that ranger bloody serious? Five - ten dudes can't set up a hundred meter course and ride back and forth but friggin racing bikes going 70kph and out-of-control first-time bladers and better yet, grannies in V8's can all meander around the park and we can't set a goddamn course on an empty slab of pavement OUTSIDE that park itself, with about 1 pedestrian per hour??? this is nuts.
Dex, we gotta do something about this, meet with them in person or something. Email me your phone number and let's talk about what steps, if any, we can take. This is too nuts...

Centennial ranger danger
On 9/15/2003 Dex wrote in from (144.132.nnn.nnn)

Cut down before we begin! The man who oversees the park saftey says we definitely aren't allowed to do any "organised activity" in the park. The fact that we set up comes somehow changes skateboarding with mates to this "OA" we might be able to do it in centennial Square, but that will cost us $1400 a day!
I'm f#@!ing fuming!! All this bulls#@! with accidental damage claims ( I've forgotten the exact term for it) has left us unable to progress. In many areas of life!! I really can't believe we're considered more gangerous than a tonne of steel can secondly to that, it's forced upon us to burn fuel to get around!! No wonder we killed Iraqi's!!! it all makes sense now!! We have kill them to get there oil to burn fuel, to kill ourselves quicker!! No-one appreciates the fact that if we all rode skateboards (or bikes then we wouldn't need oil and saddam wouldn't have had the ability to wield the power he was.
Now I've lost the plot. Skate or die!~
Peace
Out

Centennial Slalom

Hey, would also just like to add how much fun i had yesterday in the short time i was there. Haggy was amazing going through the cones and has inspired me to skate more. I had forgotten how much fun skating was. Everyone brought their boards and everygone got to try different gear. Dex and graham had some cool homemade stuff. Hopefully everything gets sort out with the rangers and parklands so we can get some more sessions happening. Would love to do this a few times more before my HSC.

Yep, it was a blast getting wiggy! You really fly through those wiggles Haggy! I'd better do some practise. I rang the council this morn, but the person filling in for the person I was told to speak to (by the Ranger), wasn't there.
I'll call again tomorrow, and get it sorted.
Beers and barbie was a good finish to the session.
we may be able to do something in Hyde Park, if centennial falls through (maybe not the Barbie). Anyway, I'll keep you informed. I'm working on those offsets in my head at the moment.

CP Slalom
On 9/14/2003 Haggy wrote in from (203.213.nnn.nnn)

A fine day was had in Centennial park yesterday, while it lasted. Joseph and I cruised down and met up with Graham and Dex on a great strip of pavement right outside the park. A bit into it, Adrian showed up too so it was a good little gang. A superb spot I thought, no traffic, few pedestrians, space to set two courses side by side. I set a 7ft straight course to get everyone warmed up and another course with a variety of offsets and stingers. We had a good time wiggling until the park ranger came by and gave us the boot. Apparently we were obstructing access with our row of little red cones! What crap! Access to what? To whom?! So we had to pickup the cones, but were allowed to keep the barbq going, draining our sorrows in sausages and beer... Now we need to petition the parks people to let us ride a couple of times a month... and find new spots as well.
Let's stay on the lookout. I'll keep you all posted on the next gathering, hopefully in a bust-free spot.
Dex, let me know what happens with the parks people.
Peace out!

CP Slalom

Yeah, that's the place. It's wide, smooth, no traffic, very few pedestrians, the place is perfect for flat slalom. There's also a decent hill in the park that we might be able to set a course on.
It would be great to have a regular day set up for slalom in the park, either weekly or bi-weekly. Let's see how it goes on Sunday.
See you there!

Slalom Centennial Park
On 9/11/2003 nifotc wrote in from (210.49.nnn.nnn)

The arrangement sounds good. I may not be able to make it this sunday, but hopefully this will become a regular date so i can make it next time. I've got a slalom board here and i don't think i'm really using it to it's full potential so someone has to teach me how. Is the planned spot the blocked off walkway that's not inside the park, but just outside next to the tennis courts and field?

Concrete Wave in NZ (maybe Oz)
On 9/11/2003 CarvinKiwi wrote in from (210.86.nnn.nnn)

Just to let you all know that I've been talking with Mike from Concrete Wave about getting his great mag down here in New Zealand (currently they send 500 copies to Oz). We're looking at bulk shipping copies out to New Zealand and then me mailing them out from here to save on postage and bring the cost down. Should be able to do a 12 month (5 issues) sub for NZ$45.00-50.00 (currently about NZ$70.00) though the more subscriptions we can do, the cheaper it'll be. So if anyone is interested drop me an e-mail at nzscm@ihug.co.nz If you're having trouble finding it in Oz let me know, maybe we can include you guys in this too.

Slalom - Centennial Park
On 9/10/2003 Haggy wrote in from (203.134.nnn.nnn)

Yo, here it is. This sunday, whoever wants to slalom lets meet at Centennial Park. I got 25 cones, whoever else has cones, please bring em so we can set something longer. Joseph, bring some cones and we'll chop off the bases and that'll work.
Time: 12noon
Location: Corner of Lang and Robertson Road/Cook Rd (the road is Robertson on the southern side of Lang and Cook on the northern side). This is right outside the western entrance to the park. There is a walking path (wide, smooth-as-anything asphalt) parrallel to Lang road, just opposite the equestrian centre. Look at your maps closely, cos its a bit confusing around there. Lang road is a curved road. It runs along the northwest edge of the park, but where it turns straight west and runs just south of the equestrian cenre and fox studios, there is the path where i'll be running some cones. It's flat but it'll be fast and fun. If we get sick of that we can go into the park and find some runs there.
If you're driving from the west, follow cleveland street across South Dowling St and Anzaz Parade straight onto Lang Rd. You can't miss it.
I don't have a cell, but email or call me 9816-1947.

I hope people show up. Looking forward to meeting you Dex. Kanufi I heard you wanna slalom, hope to see you. Anyone else interested please come, it should be fun. Bring some various boards, we'll make it a good session.
Check this site for any possible changes. Otherwise i'll be there noon on sunday.

see you there,
Haggy
