Allawah plus Sydney Downhill
On 5/9/2004 Scott Tansley wrote in from (203.220.nnn.nnn)

Just spoke to Haggie about saturday. Which is the 15th of May, not the 14th as he said below. And since Kanufi found out about the "Sydney Downhill" which is on the same day we figured that we could get an early start at Allawah. Ealy as in 10.00 in the morning. Hang there and skate for 2 or 3 or 4 hours then jump in the cars and head on down to check out the downhill.
mmmmmnn. 2 venues in one day. Sydney rocks.

Scott.

Not sure about timing gear. Not sure even whats needed. But definately gotta keep rollin film as we go. I'll bring the tripod next time. Has a good spinny handle. Good for whip pans and stuff. Also the monopod which stretches out for more stable and better shooting from a moving skateboard. We can edit as we go back at my place the same night even. Have full edit capabilities, post production and special effects, not that we should do that sort of thing but I like to add a lot of cool funny stuff. So long as we keep the skateboarding footage real, like where doing we should be ready to entertain. Have good bbq and pool (bit cold for that now though).
Ok enough about the filming crap. Thats a given now. Let it roll. Candid.
Gotta tell Brad Shaw about this. Probly kill me for not tellin him about it already. He's hang'n for this type of action and the guy can skateboard thats for sure. He orginizes a lot of skateboard events in Australia. He runs the "National Skateboarders Association of Australia inc. Last time I was at his place trading old school bits we talked mostly slalom, free riding, crusing type stuff. He needs to be part of the big picture in this. I'll give him a call tomorrow.
Time for my late night (2am) scary downhill cruze from many blocks away. Downhill all the way back. I know every crack and pot hole. Good run to sleep on.
Helmet on...

See yuz.

Scott, that video rocks. man you put that together quick, and with music too! Right on! We'll have to keep filming and getting good footage together.
Great meeting you... And you'll be ripping up the course in no time, you were shaving seconds off each run you took.
do you know anyone with any electric skills? we need to get a timing system together, that's when it starts being fun. I'll try to scope out some options this weekend.

Kanufi & Dex: Good to see you guys. A slide clinic sounds like a great idea, its' a good spot for it, just fast enough without being too scary. how about a Most revolutions slide contest? 360, 540, 720, 900....
Josh - let us know when that video is up, see you next time!

Everyone, May 14 is next scheduled day at Allawah...
until then
peace out.

Had a ball on may day ,the course is good for all levels of riding not just slalom.I reckon a few hours each night dancing to old midnight oil songs doing the garret thing might be a good training method for the wiggle(similar arm action )all that aside fun was had by all.And next time we could have a slide clinic so everyone knows how to emergency stop.Once you learn to slide it opens up a whole new world (downhill)See you all there next time its on. kanufi

I'm getting pretty excited reading about this Sydney slalom scene that's kicking into gear. I live in Japan at the moment, but I'll be moving back to Sydney next year and can't wait to join in.

Love the video from Allawah - makes me homesick to see those gum trees and the clear blue sky.

Hey Haggy saturday was awsome. Was my first time at a slalom get together. Wish I could have stayed till the end but had to get my son back home. He really liked it too. I couldn't beleave how fast you and Paul Price were going. I started of pretty slow and ended up going heaps faster after a few hours. Well kind of faster. I learnt so much on saturday. I can't thank you all enough. To all who were there, you all rock. I even took along one of my old school 1974 chicago trucked lighning bolts for some silly wobbly wiggling. I even tried out those new Bahne mini slalom wheels on a mini street deck. The wheels felt good but the deck was totally unappropriate. But that setup worked really good at the fishbowl on the way home. Thanks for those Jack. Here's some footage from Allawah May 1st 2004.

Its a 13 meg mpeg. I'll try to keep the movies smaller in future.
See you all again in two weeks.

Cheers everyone
Scott.

Yea Haggy it's been fun following your posts from all ends of this planet. Sounds like you've had yourself a lot of cool adventures. Reminds me of myself when I was in my 20's...living in So Cal...going to Mex, Costa Rica etc..on extended surf tours. Enjoy it while it lasts. Would love to see you at LC. I'm planning on making out there as well. Take care and keep on posting.

Sydney Slalom

A great day was had by all yesterday at Kempt Field in Allawah.

The potential of the spot was confirmed yesterday, as we rode for five hours with no hassles, just good vibes and pizza-donating bowlers.

We set a fun course starting on a slightly sloped top section where you build up lots of speed pumping, before a quick right-hand turn down into a hilly stretch. It was fast going around the corner and took a while for everyone to get dialled in so they didn't blow out coming out of the corner.

This will definitely be the site of future races. There is plenty of room for parrallel racing and might be a good spot for some slalomcross-type of event.

We have saturday in two weeks, May 15, tentatively set as the next day for slalom there. I'll let you all know as we get closer to the date.

Good to see everyone there! Happy Riding...

I was just scrolling down the page and I saw your posts. Don't know how I missed them before. Sorry about that, didn't mean to be rude.

Of course I remember you from hyde park! That was a lot of fun skating with you guys last summer. The crystal palace comp was good too. You guys definitely have a cool scene over there.

No plans to be back in England. I'm here in Oz for a while, might head to the northern hemisphere for Christmas, but I don't imagine the slalom scene is really kicking at that time of the year in the UK!

Still trying to build up a slalom scene here. Tomorrow we should have a fun day, it may just be the start of something good...

Alrighty, take care. I'll bet you are looking forward to the season ramping up over there.

Peace
Haggy

I checked out Allawah this morning and its by far the best spot I've seen so far in Sydney for slalom.
It's a bike track, very wide, smoothly paved, with a couple of hills as well as some flatter sections.

Where is it: Kempt Field, on the north side of Allawah train station in Allawah, which is close to Hurstville, Kogarah, and Carlton.

Internet Map: http://www.whereis.com.au/whereis/mapping/zoomMap.do?mapIndex=7&brandId=1&level=1

How to get there:
1. Take the train. Allawah is just six stops south of Central station on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawara lines. But be careful, i am informed Allawah is a minority station so not all trains will stop there.
2. Drive. Check out the map link above!

When: 12 noon. I'll probably be there a bit earlier to set a course or two and check out the scene.

Hopefully some people will make it. This is a good spot to just cruise, practice slides, run cones, whatever.

my number is 0417 499 404, call if you have any questions.

Will this become the slalom hotbed of sydney? only time will tell...

Skate shops in Tokyo

If you're interested in a bit of slalom this weekend, keep saturday free.
There should be a pretty good group of us, Paul is still in town, as is Jadranko, who flew in from the land of secretive banking, Switzerland, last night.

Check back on Thursday or Friday for venue details, as we haven't yet decided where we'll have it. I'm checking out a spot in Allawah this week which may prove to be a go.

So who's in?
Josey Wales & Crew- I know you're down.
Kanufi - yeah man, we gotta get a skate back on.
Dex - bout time we wiggle again.
Adrian - you wont be the only one riding an indiana

If we get a bit of racing going, there might just be some surprise prizes...

Coming to Japan - Tokyo, May 20-25, looking for some places to ride my slalom or long/park boards. Skateparks, regular parks, etc. Also will take any advice on nightlife and things to do. Sorta cheap restaurants. There's not much 420 in Japan or is there? Staying in Roppongi area. Anybody want to show me the town some night (girls preferred of course). Lot's of shortboard surfing there - any good longboard breaks? Any info is appreciated.
