red bull race

Yeah Nic i heard it was on in perth W.A but i couldnt find it anywhere on the east coast.I thought it was going to be on with the x;games being held in sydney and all, but after talking to sector 9 sydney they reckon the organisers could,nt afford to close down the streets for the event so they had a splinter event on down the gong with the cameras but it was very hush hush. They should have held it in the opera house carpark which is meant to be a filthy multi level spiraling beast but it didnt happen. It might only need people like us to go to the media and organise the whole thing ,im sure they would be interested as its something people like to watch.

Hello Mad Hack!

This is for anyone trying to organize a comp in Japan. Keep an eye on the TLP contest series dates and try to schedule one or two events between dates in North America.

The possibility of more entries as well as promotion for the re-birth Via media and sponors.

JSA
On 12/26/2001 Mad Hack wrote in from (211.12.nnn.nnn)

Hi,
JG, I really have been in contact with the JSA. I will try again. The last time I tried I got no answer. The country is really regional, so I'm hoping to do something in this region (Chugoku, with Hiroshima in the centre), but it will be starting from nothing, maybe. There are some longboarders around, but the best way will be for me to be seen and have others approach me. Right now, real equipment, like spacers, for example, is impossible to find. Longboards are no problem: slalom is jazzier so should catch on if it does (a big if). I hope some Japanese riders will tap into this site, but language makes things alittle difficult, I think (as you can see, the post-British-colonial presence is stronger here). I'll try to get them to link here and to the differnt manufacturers' sites. We'll see. It IS taking a long time, I know, but everything here does. The high school I teach at still doesn't have a computer lab for the students...go figure.
Scott

Slalom in ASIA
On 12/25/2001 johngilmour wrote in from (12.86.nnn.nnn)

My advice to you guys. Throw a contest about 6 months to a year from now...see who shows up. Let the word spread that you are having a slalom contest and give people enough time to practice to compete. You'll have more people show up than you expected. Someone should contact the Japanese slalom association. The All Japan time attack circuit.

Scene in Beijing, Hong Kong, Thailand, Bali, NZ, Fiji
On 12/25/2001 John wrote in from (61.135.nnn.nnn)

Adam, you are the best. What better gift could a traveler ask for than these regional forums? Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!!!

As for my Deal:

My wife and I (both longboarders) have been teaching university in Beijing for the past month, and will be here for yet another month. After we are done, we are heading down to Hong Kong, Thailand, Bali, Southern Island of NZ (Mostly Nelson) and Fiji. Currently traveling with a couple of my custom compact travel longboards. Anybody got any scoop on the scene in any of these locations? Anybody want to hook up and ride some hills (or here in Beijing - flats)? If so, respond to this forum, or e-mail direct and we can exchange info.

As for Beijing, all I can say is FLAT. On one hand, this has left me yearning for a nice big hill (or even a smooth ditch like back home in Albuquerque, NM). On the other hand, you can get around super fast and easy on the wide, smooth, mostly modern bike paths flanking every major street. Plus the looks you get from the bicyclists/bus drivers/motorized tricyles/taxi drivers/donkey cart drivers are CLASSIC!!!

Anyway, cheers to all on this side of the Pacific.

Guam Picts
On 12/24/2001 Bob Swartz wrote in from (207.199.nnn.nnn)

HEre is a link to see what riding in Guam is like. There are 6 local lugers and the ring leader is none other then 45 year old Rock Star of the Electric Boonie Dogs - Kim Aiken. The roads are fresh, steep and smooth and the locals and law enforcement love to watch. Only complaint is the million reflectors they put on the roads (local nick for them is M&M's) and it gets dark to early.

Some day I will add some narration to the picts...

xmas day
On 12/23/2001 h0dad wrote in from (202.37.nnn.nnn)

There is one thing I like about xmas day, just one thing...the
city is a ghost town. My friend Aaron (new convert to the
cult of the longboard) plan to spend the day exploring for
cul de sacs, driveways, ramps, anything new to get the boards
out of the boot to ride. After that, if it is a perfect day,
we'll get some evening glass, fingers crossed.

Hamtown
On 12/23/2001 Jimi wrote in from (210.86.nnn.nnn)

We have some reasonable hills, nah, make that average. Raglan's alright, plenty to keep you busy. We go to Taurange a lot. It's good. Me and my flatmate go to the pub, then when it closes, drive to Tauranga (I'm sober)it takes about 50mins, and ride the hills there, come back at about 6am. Aucklands good too, I'm up there at the moment. The problem I find is that whilst I can scrape some people together to go for a cruise, (namely my flatmate) I can't find anyone that will go fast with me. (I love to go as fast as I can) and everyone else just wants to take their time and cruise. (Mainly because the are surfer orientated longboarders)

Hafa Adai Guam
On 12/18/2001 lbk wrote in from (166.90.nnn.nnn)

Last year, Bob Swartz, local Maryland street luger, told me that Guam has some downhillers. They are luge riders but I can only imagine what the hills would be like on a pintail longboard. Guam is US Territory located in the Mariana Islands about 7 1/2 hours by jet west of Hawaii. From my years out there I can tell you they have got some steep grades. Just don't try to ride anything when it is wet, the coral rock based roads are slick when the least bit of rain comes down. Also don't try to vote in the Presidential elections because they don't have the right to vote in presidential elections. Residence of Guam are US Citizens but are not afforded the same voting rights. What a travesty of American history.

Anyway, Guam has got to be my favorite place in the world. Out there if you embrace the Chamorro culture and leave your mental baggage at home, the island is a tropical dream. Just show respect to the locals and all is cool.

Too bad longboard skateboarding wasn't as prevalent when I lived on Guam. Well, maybe the skateboarders in Guam will get wind of this forum on ncdsa.

Laters,
DR

Also Damon & Vernon from Levin.
BTW, you guys heard of the Manapouri powerstation down south? 1.5km underground downhill tunnel, used to take a tourist bus down into the depths, the bus struggles to climb back up the 1.5/10 gradient asphalt.

I have the pleasure of working for a Japanese company that allows me the priviledge of visiting The East at least once or twice a year. Would love to hear from any slalomers and longboarders in Osaka (My company, Fujisawa Pharmaceuticals Co, Ltd is based there) or Seoul (I'm going to be in Seoul in January).
