Haven't been much in Milford for a few years. Decent town, nice downtown section, beach spots (typical CT 'beaches'), cost not bad for area. Great looking new concrete park! Close to New Haven which is a plus to me. Post Road and all that shopping(/traffic) cuts straight through. Neigboring Orange is a good choice, though not on coast. Been in CT all my life and it is home. I'm in West Hartford (and very happy there).

I had never seen that part of the site. thanks for pointing that out. Now I have a much clearer picture of what is left and how the surrounding area looks. I never realized the mogul field was at Carlsbad. I only remember the oldest section (or so I think) that is next to the planned cloverleaf bowl. Getting that thing back up and operating would be so sweet. I would definitely have to grab some guys and come out there on some old decks. riding that terrain on new stuff, or even on pigs would not do it justice. we're talking solid boards/ACS 500s etc. When I skated Derby, it was real limiting. but had I had something of older design board, it would have been awesome. We are going to try for a DC trip prior to woodbridge closing down, but with hockey leagues going full bore and family and kids and work, I just dont see it happening. I love my new job, but I really miss the DC and LA business trips that I used to get every 6 months or so.

Yes, they are in the process of digging up the old Carlsbad park and maybe putting up a museum and adding on new parts in addition to the original park. Hopefully that will happen. checkout www.savecarlsbadraceway.com and hit 'skateboard'. Hope you will come up and session Lansdowne one of these days when it gets warmer.

Sorry to hear about the Vans park closing.
Well, I finally made it up to the new park in Burnaby, Canada. It's in Bonsor Park. It has an 18 foot full pipe, and nice bowl with pool coping. I had a lot of fun here. I love pipes, what can I say. It's not quite as big or long as Upland, but it's nice. The bowl itself is like a mini-Orcas. A square bowl with an island in the middle. Very fast...Oh, Sasha, there's also a street area that looks pretty sweet too! ;-) This is a photo of Matt who was with me.
More photos of Burnaby (Bonsor), BC, Canada.

Rode Vans today for the last time....waaaaay crowded but fun. At one point the entire pool was surrounded with a nice snake session going on. Signs and T-shirts everywhere with anti KOHL's messages...I guess they are moving in....It's not Kohls fault Vans is closing but the park will be missed.
Sasha sorry we missed you today...several younger girls ripping the pool and ramps.

Well, skated Vans today but stupid me, left my pool board at home, so had to be satisfied with the street stuff. I'm bummed, the employees are bummed, but the place was packed when I was there and I was happy to skate it one last time. Hope all bay area skaters can get there sometime tomorrow for one last sesh....

by preserving carlsbad, are you talking about uncovering the park or duplicating the original. Or are you simply talking about making a new skatepark on the original site. IF it is going to be a duplicate (or uncovered and rebuilt), that would be sweet. I have been craving a truly old style park. I feel that some of the park designs are migrating that direction, with some of the realistic snake run designs. the closest old park I have to me is kona or landsdowne, which definitely fits the criteria of old style park. I am pulling for a old style snake run at our current local park.

Wow, the Milford park looks like incredible fun. If one were to wander over in the morning or afternoon next mid-week, what would be the chances of getting in a few runs, do you think? Would one be hoppin' fences and if so, would he be noticed?

Worlds First Skatepark Saved?!

All this news of Vans parks closing is not good, but but it's good to hear that the Carlsbad is gonna see the light of day again. Got this email today...
I have good news for you. Our efforts may have made a difference.
The now buried Carlsbad Skate Park is in the process of being preserved! It is true, the buried Skate Park built in 1976, and buried for 20+ years, is being negotiated for purchase by the Skate Board group, headed by David Bergthold. The owners are sympathetic and are indeed open to saving the park. The property the Skate Park is located on is a much smaller 6 acre section, and may be split off & separated in order to prevent it from being destroyed. The talks are moving forward. I am extremely happy with these ongoing negotiations. But still, the continued interest of qualified investors is vital. But it looks like GH Fenton is being very reasonable. I praise them for that. They are doing the right thing. As for the remaining 137+ acres that is known as Carlsbad Raceway, I am afraid that the news is not as good.
THE END - - is in sight for the Raceway. Grading is scheduled for mid to late November! We have not been able to stop it. Several events have had a negative effect on our plans to save the raceway. 1. The State of California could not fund the purchase of this property at this time. 2. HG Fenton closed escrow much earlier than originally anticipated. 3. Lack of funding to support our accumulated legal fees. 4. Dooms dayers negative propaganda helped squelch our ability to gain more support.
The Raceway as we know it could be gone in as soon as a week or two. Only a combined purchase offer of $20 mil could change this. So far, the indications are clear that there is NO interest, corporate or private, in purchasing this property. So, without interested buyer(s) / investor(s), the 143 acre Raceway is doomed. It is just a matter of days now. Only a miracle of immediate investment activity can save the entire 143 acre raceway. This would indeed be a surprise to me. Time is quickly running out on the drag strip & motocross track. Because of this, I do not plan to spend any more time on the Carlsbad Raceway effort. Instead, I hope that we all can get behind David Bergthold and the rest of the Skate guys, in order to help them wrap up the skate park effort. I intend to work to support them. Although there is much to do, and more hills to climb, this effort looks to have success written all over it. It appears that it can indeed be preserved. The now buried Carlsbad Skate Park, is the worlds first skate park, and for that reason should be preserved. Many young skate boarders will be able to enjoy it. I know that my seven year old will want to be having fun at this historic facility. And I cannot wait to get him over there. I am very happy that this looks to be moving forward. Although I am sad that our efforts to save the 143 acre Raceway look to be at an end, I can honestly say that we have indeed made a difference. By helping save and uncover the historic Carlsbad Skate Park we will have achieved a great deal of success. We will have helped preserve something that would have more than likely been destroyed, and in doing so, skate boarders from all over the world will enjoy this area for many years to come. We can be proud of this. This is very special indeed. I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Your support was appreciated. You have indeed helped us, and have made an impact. You are all great. I hope that we can some day meet up again, at a new raceway, a better one! Sincerely: Bruce Santourian Save Carlsbad Raceway, Chairman www.savecarlsbadraceway.com
...Bruce was supportive on both fronts to help save the track/skatepark, and it's a bummer to see the track go but we will all have a definite pilgrimage to make now because of their efforts.

hey, I'm definitely gonna hit Milpitas at least once more(hopefully two more times) before they stick a fork in it. Yeah, too bad; it sucks that they're closing it right as our crappy NorCal winter gets underway. Be sad to see that washboard go; a lot of fun. Hope to see some of y'all there. chris olden

That's crazy. Last I heard they had a two year lease which doesn't expire for quite a while yet. I'll write to Kristy Van Doren right now for details.I'm stuck in LA so don't know if I can make it to skate this weekend...
This is crazy, it's the only indoor skatepark to get us through the winter. I was never more sad if this info is true......:( Plus I LOVE the pool. It's the only pool I get to skate on a regular basis.

I'll be there Sat around 2pm. Bummer to see it close, but Menlo is close to groundbreaking which puts a skatepark almost in my backyard. Some great sessions were had in the pool there. That park was a big part of why I got back into skating and will *never* quit. I'm in San Diego on Friday, on business actually, and will be hitting Memorial with the Del Mar replica before returning on Sat aft for the final session.

I love the fact that Vans cannot post any of this information on their website. I checked at noon today, and no word. I'm spreading the news in the Monterey area so we can get a final session. Really sad to hear, but as the quote goes "nothing good lasts forever" I guess I could say this about purchasing Vans products in the future as well.

I made it to milpitas about 4 times (from Alabama). I really liked that park. the pool was excellent, very forgiving, yet quirky because the bottom was slanted downward. Virtually any place you rode up a wall, you came down into a different tranny or depth, very odd but a blast. the first time I went, the pool was real polished and slick. sometime before my later trips, they sandblasted it and it gripped beautifully. I had hoped to hit it again before it closed. woodbridge is closing after Christmas. Whats up with Orange?

lansdowne RULES! they have repaved all the rough s#@! and added a street course for the ollie hoppers and a little miniramp. the only complaints are: waiver for under 18s, pads needed (rentals avail for no charge), and the old spots where you could grind the edge of the bowl are gone cause they paved over them.
