Hey Lbk, thanks for the email, yeah this site and your email has been great for the 411 on the cape..i also posted on the main bullatin board...I'm stoked, I even got a bud thats gonna come out and try to surf for the first time. I just hope this time isnt like the last time where i brought a newcomer to learn surfing with me where we had a encounter with a 7 foot brown shark feeding on 100st in OC...that was def a hand full for both of us......us two and 4 other surfers all got out of the water super quick but the waves were so good(huricane swell) that we had to go back in 15 minutes later and take the 1 in 6 odds. Luckily the shark was gone by then..... Yeah anyway, thanks again man and yea that picture of the NM ditch looks incredible! There is one a little more burly in germantown MD which is really fun to sk8..... Let me know if theres anyone trying to hit that one up some time. Its even sk8able at night....actually thats the best time to sk8 it

The ditch in Avril Lavigne's video

Have you seen Avril Lavigne's video "Complicated"? There's a cool ditch in that video. It looks a lot like the ditch I skated in the Hollywood hills not too long ago. Except it wasn't red, but that would be easy to paint. Anyone know which ditch that was?

Joe, Just wanted to back my self up a bit, (cough cough), ahem. I've ridden ALL KINDS of stuff in the ditches, Dregs included. In fact, I helped Sharon Sidlo dial in a Dregs 44" Maggie that she loves in the ditch. And I agree, the Bear is friggin' GNARLY, that's why I recommended at LEAST full pads. I currently am riding a 59" Afroman with a 40" wheelbase as my biggest tanker, then I'm always trading around and riding different stuff in the 40" range, mostly with Randals and all kinds of wheels, Kryptos, Abec 11, Turner, Gravity, Sector 9, Surf One, Bones, you name it. There's more stuff out there I've owned or ridden than stuff I'm still curious about. Don't worry, I know about proper ditch quivers. I was just trying to point out that ABQ has a diverse enough ditch selection that ANYONE can do some ditch riding when they come to town, reagardless of their style or what their equipment is. And, even though a longboard is ideal, someone who rips a pool deck with slightly bigger softer wheels COULD rip the Bear, if they kick enough ass. It wouldn't surprise me to see Mark Gonzales or someone rip that ditch on your standard trick stick. My point was that if some people are coming to town to mostly do park and vert skating, that a longer board might help but is not 100% necessary. However, I would like to agree and say that, in general, NM ditch skating is MUCH more hardcore than what your average person would think of as a ditch. I mean, look at the Bear below, people! See those car tracks on either side of it? Compare those to the flatbottom for crying out loud. This ditch is MONSTROUS, make no doubt. But, come one come all, it doesn't get any better than this for you ditch and bank riders. Time to prove your worth, and I'm more than ready.

I surfed the outer banks for alot of years, and I have to say, Buxton lighthouse is the best on the east coast. But where is the wooden bowl? I know there is a warped cracked half pipe in the woods on Old Lighthouse Rd. off of Highway 12 in Buxton, but as for that there is nothing to skate, and your lucky if you can find a smooth paved road let alone a graded one.

BonsaiSk8,
The Outer Banks are the best banks I know of but the only thing you can skate there is a wood bowl. The surf is where it at in the OBX. Check my e-mail I sent you with places to stay there. By the way, did you see that sick pic of the NM ditch. Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think some of you may have the wrong impression about our ditches. We are running our event at the Bear beacause it IS so gnarly. It's the only 35 mph ditch and the only one that you might consider wearing leathers or all of your safety gear. It's smoother than asphalt and dropping in from the start line is burly!! Timeship Team rides 56" dregs boards and Randall 180s with Kryptos. AND for you sliders out there it is unbelievable for those long drawn out 540s and bertlemans. Kaylee I suggest you contact me and try a 56" board or the 48" classic. We are a Dregs dealer and support them for making such a diverse quiver. We need it in Albuquerque.

Hey folks, this weekend I'm planning to go out to the outer banks for the first time on a solo mission and I was curious if any of you guys and or gals have any useful info about where I can camp and good surf spots to hit up. Also if anyones trying meet up and session let me know too. My sk8 crew tapered down thin to me and a couple other guys but as far as the surfing goes, I am a crew of 1......i know, i know its a pity....:>) But i'll never stop looking for them sessions!

forgot to mention....
Most of the local longboarders ride the ditches on Sector 9 and Gravity boards and wheels, but I bet you can guess the reason behind that. Don't get me wrong, those products rock in the ditch, better than riding a shortboard. I just think, that with this kind of local terrain, the local shops would carry a wider selection of good stuff. Time to open my own shop.....

The many ditches run from skatepark smooth to griptape rough. The softer the wheel, the more ditches available to you. The difference between the ditches and the average skatepark is that there is no wheel "too soft" for the ditch. It's all about how you want to ride it. Are they going to be tic-tacking around the flats and flipping on the transitions? Tons of the local flipper kids rip the ditches. Do they want to haul ass? Flashbacks rule in the ditch, and my new Avalons are unbelievable! Ideal setup? Depends on your mood and how you like to ride. Some people like a pool board so they can work the hips and curbs. Some people like a pintail so they can soul cruise. I highly recommend a kicktail. Full leathers are not necessary unless you plan on breaking some speed records. Full pads are a great idea. So, maybe an ideal setup would be a 40” concave kicktail deck with RII’s or wedged Indys, and maybe an 80a-90a wheel like a Flashback or Bones Bomber. Again, it’s all about what you want to do. The average grade of the cement is rougher than a sidewalk, more like asphalt, but harder too, so you can get away with a harder wheel. Here’s another visual. The “Bear” is almost as gnarly as it gets, but there’s others that are longer, faster, smoother, smaller, whatever……

There's a small ditch at the intersection of rt.17 and rt.4. It's not a downhill ditch, but it's kinda rippable. Lots of flat bottom (like 15-20 ft) and the banks are like 2' high and medium steep. fun. It's behind an office building btween the building and rt. 17. If you're going towards NYC on 17, get off on 4 towards the city, and turn in at the first office building. I've got a mapquest gif and I can email it to you. I used to skate it every day when I was a budding recording engineer in Jersey City and staying in Ridgewood with my cousins. There's a big bank behind some burger king in Bergen too, and Brooklyn Bridge Banks rule too!

Can someone post or email the grade of the concrete surfaces of the ditches in ALBQ ? I`m trying to hook up some FL boyz with wheels for thier excursion out there next week. Mostly thier heading out for some vert and park action but they have this wild notion of running the ditches. I don`t think any of them own leathers. Or boards to run in the "Bear" fo that matter. What is the ideal set-up? Boards, trucks, wheels....thanks!

Whats up R and LBK....yeah to be honest i havn't really looked to hard for any ditches in DC yet......I'm on a heavy sched. right now with finding a place to live and such...But regardless I'm still sk8ing about 3 times a week so I'm stoked. Yeah the riverdale ditch is a fun burly ass ditch but I havn't sk8ed it in a long time....I remember about a couple of years ago (i believe 2 or 3)me and my friend were sk8ing the riverdale ditch and some old school sk8 punks rolled up in there with their fishtales and we had a sick session. I believe a couple were from crispus attucks.....Annywho, I'll keep posted to see if there are any cool plans to hit up some fun sessions....peace all!

The Sandia Downhill Challenge is a downhill skateboard race with sponsors, permits and hay bales. The Worlds' Largest Banked Slalom is an UNDERGROUND contest the following day with no permit and the small chance that we would have to adjust. We ride here every week, it's in an industrial area and has been good to us for 25 years. I'm not exagerating the need for full safety gear and a LONG board. Just ask Tony Alva or Biker Sherlock. We do have a picture of the "Bear" on our small webpage at www.timeshipracing.com

AKA the Hook. It's real, very real. Haven't skated it since the mid '80s, but still there and very fun. Basically a 8' tranny 3/4 pipe that sits at the bottom of and perpendicular to a long and steep spillway from the reservoir. You will need a rope to get down into and out of it. To avoid copyright infringement by stealing the pic off the 'Net, here's a link to Bryce's site that has a picture of the Hook:
Notice the that black and yellow sticker pasting done by Micke in the mid '80s are still there.
