K Lee, You should set up an outlaw banked slalom race if the ditch isn't a quick bust. You have a real gem there.

What board you ride all depends on what ditch you're at and how you want to skate it. Some of them are smooth enough for 55mm 101a wheels (if you're the type who's used to those darn things), some are gnarly enough to require nothing higher than, say, 85a. Lots of the kiddies (more so before any parks opened) skate the hips and catch sick airs, doing all sorts of flips and grabs, on their popsicles. Lots of pool skater types ride it like a ramp/bank. Then again, it is a longboarder's paradise, and longboards RULE the ditch! My Afroman Big Worm has been ridden in the ditch on occasion. I'd recommend something in the 36-42" range, stiff, concave, kicktail, and 70mm wheels in your favorite duro under 85a. Some spots in some ditches are smoother than the local park, some stuff is gnarlier than most asphalt. Like I've said before, around 30 rideable ditches in the area, and I've got at least 5 better than anything you've ridden lately. I've gone faster than I've ever gone on any hill down the ditch in the pic, and I still haven't pushed it all the way! A speedboarder could hit serious speeds in this thing on a calm day (the wind usually blows UP the ditch, unless a storm is coming, then the wind AND water are coming down the ditch). These things are extremely versitile as far as riding style goes. You can easily control your speed, like while on a downhill, by carving as tight as you can. You can also pump the trannies and get as much speed as your cojones can handle. That's why all kinds of bikes/motorcycles/go-karts/etc... are seen blazing down this thing. And THAT'S why it's a super bust, you can't even walk down the thing legally. But, it is my destiny to figure out a way to have an outlaw bank-to-bank slalom race in this thing. Destiny, I tell you.

Omigod! Suddenly, summer vacation plans have changed. Bugs Bunny was right! He should've taken that left turn at Albuquerque!!!!!!!!!!
Is the concrete smooth, mild, or rough? Hard park wheels recommended, or big and soft kryptos or Super G's? Longboards or shorter pool/park boards?
Tell the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce business is about to go up!
Thanks for the photo K-Lee!

hey k-lee...
what a huge stoke 4 you & your fellow albequerquian skate citizens!
this is a feature which is obviously overlooked when the criteria & rankings for the top ten most livable cities are in consideration!
that photo should be a postcard & brochure @ the albequerque chamber o'commerce... you are blessed indeed!

I just though you all would like a sneak peek at what I ride every day. It's much longer, steeper, and faster than the pic suggests:
More pics and video to come. Stay tuned.......

Pine Hills Ditch, Orlando FL R.I.P.

I just have to post a R.I.P. for a great ditch that we ripped to shreds in Orlando; this ditch in Pine Hills... it was ghetto (literally) but it was so rad; about 200 yds downhill, in a mellow v shape (like 6 inches of rounded bottom, but you crossed the bottom at an angle. A sharp lip for grinding, (and there were some awesome 6-8" pvc pipes set up for sliding/grinding), it was so rad. Many day-long sessions with car speakers blasting were had; brought coolers with the gatorade (florida's damn hot!) At the bottom, it got deeper and steeper (aww yeah!) and there was a platform at the end that went over the pipe at the end; it ran perpendicular to the ditch, and was hard to get on; you had to carve up a 6' wall, really steep, and kickturn down 1' to the platform, and adjust your speed to land on it. Super fun, and I was back there for a few days, went out there, and it's under condos now. Just wondering if anyone else here skated that ditch... Cool.

The problem was the people on the horses hated skaters. The skateboard noise spooked the horses.

Skated the "V" in the late seventies. I have it on my "List". Went back a few years ago. Heavy bust. The escape factor is pretty low.
I have a few skate spots in SoCal to trade. Over 25+, only includes one park.

The U was great in the day! About 6 or so of us used to take the bus all the way to the top of the hill and bomb it to the ditch. I remember alot of skaters getting busted while me and my bros out ran the cops! I used to see Ed Economy there and countles others..I hung up and supermaned in the fenced side and survived!

I'm checking the calender for a good date for the outlaw banked slalom. Early interested parties include Olson, Hackett, Wally, Gorman, Chicken, Richie, Arab, Ransom, Cross, Katen, and several other key So-Cal skaters. This is an informal session type race, so all are welcome. I'm trying to scrape the dough together to head east for the Folly Beach race and Gilmore's event in Boston. This will effect our schedule and I will post the firm date ASAP.

How to Find

This is aimed at Mick, but applies to all who "think" that sacred skate spot is "somewhere" nearby... When I was attending college in Arizona,we had a few Structural Engineer types that I as a draftsman would rub elbows with, some who actually skated a bit, too. We ended up with a formula,of sorts, that led us to new and exciting constructs that sometimes paid off in HUGE dividends as skate spots. Basically, you've got get access to Watershed Maps. THE source of this info is a well stocked Public Library, but County or Town Halls will do for those in rural areas. Army Corp Of Engineers is a resource of maps like no other,so I'll add them in,despite the logistical troubles of getting this info in this now-scared-and-paranoid nation (anyone fear FEMA yet?).Be sure to let Anyone know who asks that you are NOT a secuity risk if your archival activities raise eyebrows. Anyways, look for concrete structures that channel water into basins,or other collection zones. These are the best bet for big banks. In areas prone to Flash Flooding (like 'Zona,New Mex.,Texas) BE VERY ALERT to weather changes if you do find a spot. Those remote areas that are best to skate are often unpatrolled, and a good thunderstorm or two upstream of you can wash out your skatejam session (I Warned you Here;Don't forget,EVER!). Your last recourse in finding spots is to tap into the satelite photos that NASA has put up on the net. They are clear enough that I've been able to find my house (In Reading,Vt,waaayy out in the sticks) I lived in as a kid,and even spot some trees I planted only 20 years ago.Finding a network of ditches is CAKE using these photos. There, that's the most YOU need to know about finding "the Secret" skatespot..

I'm putting on a banked slalom race at a local secret spot. The race will be a winner take all pot luck, $25.00 per racer. I know SSS will represent as will FCR and BLR. No slalom boards alowed. Kicktails are mandatory, no skate under 33 inches. We will follow the event with a skate Bar B-Q at my home in Malibu where I hope to have my half pipe finished. We can also skate the local hills in the afternoon. I know the gravity guys will like that. Interested gunslingers hit me back. Ben Shroeder, I heard you was in Colorado recently. How 'bout that Boulder park? Let's skate.

Skated Vans this afternoon with Tway, Wes and Brian P. I then took them over to the Franconia Ditch. I was using my hybrid Sector9 Deep End w/ new shool wheels that were SLOW. Brian was skating his Gravity Team 39 with 90 Duros that did the trick. Likewise Wes was fast on his Afroman Numbchuck w/ Randals and 85 Duro Kryps. Tway was slashing it on his new Death Box w/ NOS 85 Blue Kryps. I had to bail early but it was so cool to see skaters in the Franconia ditch again.

Hey Duane! Yes the Riverdale Ditch is still happening, though we got tons of rain thurs eve...it should be dry this sunny weekend. Also, Mick & Scumbag: I work nr the Central Ave ditch, e-mail me for a session...and, Yes, the Arbutus Ditch is still there...better to sk8 there on sundays so the warehouse people don't think you are trying to break into their business or taking up customers parking spots......it's still fun...just bring big softer wheels as there are cracks to roll over...s-bound I-95 out of Balto, taks the beltway exit towards Catonsville...look to your right before you get on the Balto Beltway, thru the trees u will see a concrete paradise. Ok Sharon and Kaylee...I would love to sk8 your ditches w/you...
